Based on the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, a gradient-dependent plastic model that considers the strain-softening behavior is presented in this study. Both triaxial shear tests on conventional specimen and precut-specimen, which were obtained from an ancient landslide, are performed to plot the post-peak stress-strain entire-process curves. According to the test results of the soil strength, which reduces from peak to residual strength, the Mohr-Coulomb criterion that considers strain-softening under gradient plastic theory is deduced, where strength reduction depends on the hardening parameter and the Laplacian thereof. The validity of the model is evaluated by the simulation of the results of triaxial shear test, and the computed and measured curves are consistent and independent of the adopted mesh. Finally, a progressive failure of the ancient landslide, which was triggered by slide of the toe, is simulated using this model, and the effects of the strain-softening process on the landslide stability are discussed.
The paper presents simulations of the Brazilian test using two numerical models. Both models are regularized in order to obtain results independent of discretization. The first one, called gradient damage, is refined by additional averaging equation which contains gradient terms and an internal length scale as localization limiter. In the second one, called viscoplastic consistency model, the yield function depends on the viscoplastic strain rate. In this model regularization properties are governed by the assumed strain rate. The two models are implemented in the FEAP finite element package and compared in this paper. Parameter studies of the split test are performed in order to point out the features of each model.

Numerical simulation was applied to investigate the Taylor vortex flow inside the concentric cylinders with a constant radial temperature gradient. The reliability of numerical simulation method was verified by the experimental results of PIV. The radial velocity and temperature distribution in plain and 12-slit model at different axial locations were compared, and the heat flux distributions along the inner cylinder wall at different work conditions were obtained. In the plain model, the average surface heat flux of inner cylinder increased with the inner cylinder rotation speed. In slit model, the slit wall significantly changed the distribution of flow field and temperature in the annulus gap, and the radial flow was strengthen obviously, which promoted the heat transfer process at the same working condition.
This study investigates the flow efficiency and temperature based on flow path shape. Five models are designed to the no flow path, one flow path, two flow path, three flow path, add inlet flow path and add interior space gradient. Results show that two flow model(add inlet flow path and add interior space gradient), It was confirmed that model(add inlet flow path) is the optimal shape for coolant heat transfer, and model(add interior space gradient) is the optimal shape for coolant flow, demonstrates optimal design among the five models. The results of this study can be utilized to efficiently control the coolant flow through various types of flow paths.
We have investigated the transient behavior of 1D fully developed Poiseuille viscoelastic flow under finite pressure gradient described by the Oldroyd-B and Leonov constitutive equations. For analysis we employ a simple $2^{nd}$ order discretization scheme such as central difference for space and the Crank-Nicolson for time approximation. For the analysis of the Oldroyd-B model, we also apply the analytical solution, which is obtained again in this work in terms of elementary solution procedure simpler than the previous one (Waters and King, 1970). Both models demonstrate qualitatively similar solutions, but their eventual steady flowrate exhibits noticeable difference due to the absence or presence of shear thinning behavior. In the inertialess flow, the flowrate instantaneously attains a large value corresponding to the Newtonian creeping flow and then decreases to its steady value when the applied pressure gradient is low. However with finite liquid density the flow field shows severe fluctuation even accompanying reversals of flow directions. As the assigned pressure gradient increases, the flowrate achieves its steady value significantly higher than its value during oscillations after quite long period of time. We have also illustrated comparison between 1D and 2D results and possible mechanism of complex 2D flow rearrangement employing a previous solution of [mite element computation. In addition, we discuss some mathematical points regarding missing boundary conditions in 2D modeling due to the change of the type of differential equations when varying from inertialess to inertial flow.

Effects of inflow Reynolds number (Re), turbulence intensity (I) and pressure gradient on the transition flow over a blade section were studied using the ${\gamma}-Re{\theta}$ transition model (STAR-CCM+). Results show that the $Re_T$ (transition Re) at the transition location ($P_T$) varies strongly with Re, I and the magnitude of pressure gradient. The $Re_T$ increases significantly with the increase of the magnitude of favorable pressure gradient. It demonstrates that the $Re_T$ on different blade sections of a rotating propeller are different. More importantly, when there is strong adverse pressure gradient, the $P_T$ is always close to the minimum pressure point. Based on these conclusions, the $P_T$ on model propeller blade surface can be estimated. Numerical investigations of pressure distribution and transition flow on a propeller blade section prove these findings. Last, a simple method was proposed to estimate the $P_T$ only based on the propeller geometry and the advance coefficient.

Numerical simulation has been performed to investigate the bubbly flow in the liquid with vertical temperature gradient. The objective of this study is to establish an accurate numerical prediction program of gas-liquid two-phase flows in a vertical temperature gradient condition, whose mathematical model is formulated by the Eulerian-Lagrangian model. The present numerical results reveal the temperature mixing mechanism and the fluid dynamical characteristics induced by the bubbly flow in the liquid with stratified temperature. The effects of bubble radius, void fraction, and gas flow rate on bubble-driven convective flow are considered, too.
In this paper, for the first time based on the nonlocal strain gradient theory the effect of size dependency in torsional vibration of bi-direction functionally graded (FG) nonlinear nano-cone is study. The material properties were assumed to vary according to the arbitrary function in radial and axial directions. The Navier equation and boundary conditions of the size-dependent bidirectional FG nonlinear nano-cone were derived by Hamilton's principle. These equations were solved by employing the generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM). The presented model can turn into the classical model if the material length scale parameters are taken to be zero. The effects of some parameters, such as inhomogeneity constant, cross-sectional area parameter and small-scale parameters, were studied. As an essential result of this study can be stated that an FG nano-cone model based on the nonlocal elasticity theory behaves softer and based on the strain gradient theory behaves harder.
Rectangular concrete-filled steel tubular (RCFST) column, a type of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST), is widely used in compression members of structures because of its advantages. This paper proposes a robust machine learning-based framework for predicting the ultimate compressive strength of RCFST columns under both concentric and eccentric loading. The gradient boosting neural network (GBNN), an efficient and up-to-date ML algorithm, is utilized for developing a predictive model in the proposed framework. A total of 890 experimental data of RCFST columns, which is categorized into two datasets of concentric and eccentric compression, is carefully collected to serve as training and testing purposes. The accuracy of the proposed model is demonstrated by comparing its performance with seven state-of-the-art machine learning methods including decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), support vector machines (SVM), deep learning (DL), adaptive boosting (AdaBoost), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and categorical gradient boosting (CatBoost). Four available design codes, including the European (EC4), American concrete institute (ACI), American institute of steel construction (AISC), and Australian/New Zealand (AS/NZS) are refereed in another comparison. The results demonstrate that the proposed GBNN method is a robust and powerful approach to obtain the ultimate strength of RCFST columns.

The present paper studies the effect of the slope gradient of a fully permeable submerged breakwater using a newly developed numerical model that is able to consider the flow through a porous midium with inertial, laminar and turbulent resistance terms, i.e. simulate directly WAve-Structure (submerged breakwater)-Sand seabed interaction and can determine the eddy viscosity with LES turbulence model in 2-Dimensional wave field (LES-WASS-2D). The developed model was validated through the comparison with an existing experimental data, and further used for various numerical experiments in oder to investigate the complicated hydrodynamics on the varying slope gradient of permeable submerged breakwater. We found an acceptable phenomenon, as we expect intuitively, that reflection and transmission coefficients decrease simultaneously as slope gradient decrease. In addition, the breaking point, the circulation flow and mean vorticity around a submerged breakwater are throughly discussed.
