  • Path-based assignment(PBA) is valuable to dynamic traffic control and routing in integrated ITS framework. As one of widely studied PBA a1gorithms, Gradient Projection(GP) a1gorithm typically fields rapid convergence to a neighborhood of an optimal solution. But once it comes near a solution, it tends to slow down. To overcome this problem, we develop more efficient path-based assignment algorithm by combining Conjugate Gradient method with GP algorithm. It determines more accurate moving direction near a solution in order to gain a significant advantage in speed of convergence. Also this algorithm is applied to the Sioux-Falls network and verified its efficiency. Then we demonstrate that this type of method is very useful in improving speed of convergence in the case of user equilibrium problem.

  • Plastic gradient from geometrically necessary dislocation(GND) can affect material behavior significantly. In this research, mechanical behavior of polycrystalline solid is investigated using the finite element method incorporating plastic gradient from long range dislocation or GND effect. Plastic gradient effect is implemented in the analysis model by considering a long range strain term as well as elastic and plastic terms in the multiplicative decomposition. In the model, gradient hardness coefficient and length parameter are used to evaluate the effect of the long range strains and sensitive study is conducted for the parameters. It is confirmed that the GND amplifies hardening response of polycrystals compared with the single crystal.

  • To detect the mutation in a given sequence, there are variety of methods developed by use of the gel electrophoresis. One of the methods, TGGE (Temperature Gradient Gel Electrophoresis), is a popular technique because it can detect mutations in DNA fragment with ease and at low cost. This study used 200 bp BamHI-digested DNA fragment containing the human $\varepsilon$-globin promoter which was mutated[$\varepsilon$ F1*(-141), GATA- I*(-163), and GATA-1* & $\varepsilon$F1]. This BamHI-digested DNA fragment was directly used to detect the mutated DNA fragment on 50% denaturant gel with temperature gradient of 45$^{\circ}C$ through $53^{\circ}C$. In agreement with the theoretical result of MELTSCAN program (Brossette and Wallet, 1994) the mobilities of mutated DNA fragments were shown to be nearly distinguished on the temperature gradient gel. In contrast to the above result the heteroduplex analysis under the temperature gradient condition was shown to detect the mutated DNA fragments through the heteroduplex formation between strands of mutated DNA and wild-type DNA.

  • Neural stem cells (NSCs) have the ability to self-renew and differentiate into multiple nervous system cell types. During embryonic development, the concentrations of soluble biological molecules have a critical role in controlling cell proliferation, migration, differentiation and apoptosis. In an effort to find optimal culture conditions for the generation of desired cell types in vitro, we used a microfluidic chip-generated growth factor gradient system. In the current study, NSCs in the microfluidic device remained healthy during the entire period of cell culture, and proliferated and differentiated in response to the concentration gradient of growth factors (epithermal growth factor and basic fibroblast growth factor). We also showed that overexpression of ASCL1 in NSCs increased neuronal differentiation depending on the concentration gradient of growth factors generated in the microfluidic gradient chip. The microfluidic system allowed us to study concentration-dependent effects of growth factors within a single device, while a traditional system requires multiple independent cultures using fixed growth factor concentrations. Our study suggests that the microfluidic gradient-generating chip is a powerful tool for determining the optimal culture conditions.

  • A new method for optimizing the magnetic field gradient in the exciting coil of electronic anti-fouling (EAF) system is presented based on changing exciting coil size. In the proposed method, two optimization expressions are deduced based on biot-savart law. The optimization expressions, which can describe the distribution of the magnetic field gradient in the coil, are the function of coil radius and coil length. These optimization expressions can be used to obtain an accurate coil size if the magnetic field gradient on a certain point on the coil's axis of symmetry is needed to be the maximum value. Comparing with the experimental results and the computation results using Finite Element Method simulation to the magnetic field gradient on the coil's axis of symmetry, the computation results obtained by the optimization expression in this article can fit the experimental results and the Finite Element Method results very well. This new method can optimize the EAF system's anti-fouling performance based on improving the magnetic field gradient distribution in the exciting coil.

  • A new spatial localization technique using high-order surface gradient coil (SGC) is proposed. Although the Spatial Selection with High-Order gradient (SHOT) can provide a 2-D selection with only one selective RF pulse, the high-order gradient produced by cylindrical-shape coils has not been clinically useful for clinical systems due to the large minimum selection size caused by the limited radial gradient intensity. However, by using the proposed high-order SGCs located near the imaging region, the size of volume selection can be reduced to a clinically useful 1-4 cm in diameter by applying stronger radial gradient with much less gradient driving power. A 40 cm-by-40 cm $r^{2}$ SGC has been designed and constructed, and phantom and volunteer studies have been performed. Experimental results using spatially localized MRI show good agreement to the theoretically predicted behavior.

  • This paper presents a SR method using adaptive interpolation based on local gradient features to obtain a high quality SR image. In this method, the distance between the interpolated pixel and the neighboring valid pixel is considered by using local gradient properties. The interpolation coefficients take the local gradient of the LR images into account. The smaller the local gradient of a pixel is, the more influence it should have on the interpolated pixel. And the median filter is finally applied to reduce the blurring and noise of the interpolated HR image. Experiment results show the effectiveness of the proposed method in comparison with other methods, especially in the edge areas of the images.

  • The purpose of this study is to verfify a more effecive techique for calculating geothermal gradient. this study examines 370 data of temperature-logging having been collected since 1985. The daya are divided into three different grades grades according to the type of temperature-depth plots: 204 data show typical linear gradient (Grade A); 126 data do not explicitily show the gradient becase of various external effects such as water flow (Grade B); and the rest 40 data do not show the gradient at all (Grade D). The new technique for calculating geothermal gradient is to be required to use Greade-B data more effctiviely. This new technique includes (1) calculating the independer depth of atmospheric temperature in the earth; (2) drawing a distribution map of subsurface tempurature by using the distribution map of subsurface temperature by using Grade-A data at the independent depth; and (3) recalculating geothermal gradient of Grade-B data by using the distrbution map of subsurface temperature, borehole depth, and bottom temperature of Grade-B data by using the distribution map of subsurface temperature, borehole depth, and bottom temperature of Grade-B data. As a result, 330 data-both Grade-A and Grade-B data--can be used to draw a distribution map of hot spradient. The map clearly distinguishes anomaly areas, and helps interpret their relations to the distribution of hot springs, geology, geological structures, and geophysical anomaly areas. These new results reveal that the average of geothermal in south Korea is 25.6$^{\circ}C$/km, when calculated to the Kriging method.

  • The present study is numerically investigated the flame structure of non-premixed counterflow jet flames using the laminar flamelet model Detailed flame structures with the fuel composition of 40% CO, 30% $H_2$. 30% $N_2$ and an oxidizer composition of 79% $N_2$ and 21% $O_2$ in a non-premixed counterflow flame are studied numerically. This study is aimed to investigate the effects of axial velocity gradient and combustion atmosphere pressure on flame structure. The results show that the role of axial velocity gradient on combustion processes is globally opposite to that of combustion atmosphere pressure. That is, chemical nonequilibrium effects become dominant with increasing axial velocity gradient, but are suppressed with increasing ambient pressure. Also, the flame strength is globally weakened by the increase of axial velocity gradient but is augmented by the increase of ambient pressure. However, flame extinction is described better on the basis of only chemical reaction and in this study axial velocity gradient and ambient pressure play a similar role conceptually such that the increase of axial velocity gradient and ambient pressure cause flame not to be extinguished and extend the extinction limit, respectively. Consequently it is suggested that a combustion process like flame extinction is mainly influenced by the competition between the radical formation reaction and the third-body recombination reaction.
