Dickkopf-1 Levels in Turkish Patients with Bladder Cancer and its Association with Clinicopathological Features

  • Background: Evidence indicates that Dickkopf-1 (DKK-1) levels may be a biomarker for cancer risk. The aim of this study was to assess DKK-1 and its correlation with clinic-pathological features in patients with bladder cancer. Materials and Methods: DKK-1 levels were determined in serum samples from 90 patients with bladder cancer before transurethral tumor resection. The concentrations of DKK-1 were determined by using enzyme linked immune-sorbent assay (ELISA). Results: Elevated preoperative DKK-1 levels were associated with tumor stage (p<0.001), grade (p<0.001) and histological grade (p<0.001). Conclusions: The results of our study demonstrated that the level of serum DKK-1 is correlated with both disease progression and increase in the tumor grade. Preoperative serum DKK-1 elevation may thus represent a novel marker for the determination of bladder cancer and the detection of patients with a likely poor clinical outcome.

인지양식에 따른 인지수준과 과학탐구능력에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Cognitive Levels and the Science Process Skills Based on the Cognitive Styles)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of the cognitive levels and the science process skills based on the cognitive styles. The subjects of the study were 5-6th grade 790 students sampled by random cluster sampling method in three schools from large cities, small cities, and rural areas respectively. The results are as follows. 1) The field independent students showed significantly higher(p< 0.001) cognitive level than the field dependent ones. 2) The field independent group showed higher formation rate of subskills of the logical thinking skills than the field dependent groups. 3) It was found out that the field independent group attained significantly higher scores of science process skills than the field dependent group in 5th and 6th grade students. 4) The more cognitive levels became higher, the more science process skills were significantly higher(p< 0.001). 5) There were significant(p<0.001) differences among the science process skills for grade levels and three regions. And that there were not significant differences in the science process skills between males and females, 6) The science process skills of the field independent and the formal operational group could be acquired better scores in the science process skills than those who belong to another combinations.

초등학생의 부력 개념 형성과 인지 수준의 관계 (Elementary School Students형 Conceptions of Buoyance related with Cognitive Levels)

  • The unit of a buoyant force included in the 7th national science curriculum for 6th grade students. On the contrary, it seldom that students' conception about buoyant phenomena is studied, even though there has been many studies of students' conceptions of basic science contents. The purpose of this study was to survey the elementary school students' conceptions of a buoyant force, to analyze their cognitive levels, and to explore the relationships between them. Sixth grade students (total numbers is 192) were selected .from 5 .lasses in two elementary schools in a local city of Kyungsangdo. They were asked to respond two kinds of test, which are the Logical Thinking Ability (GALT) to investigate students' cognitive levels and the Buoyant Force Questionnaire (BFQ). We developed BFQ test, based on the 7th national science curriculum for 6th grade and the previous researches of a buoyant force. We, qualitatively, analysed students' frequency of responses about a buoyant force and their types of explanation, and, quantitatively, analysed the relationships between cognitive levels and conceptions of a buoyant force with SPSS/ PC 7.0 programmes. The results of cognitive level showed that half of 6th grade students were in the concrete operational stage, 43.2% in the transitional stage, 6.8% in the formal stage. However, their sub-logical thinking abilities in a combinational, conservational, controlling variables, proportional, probability and correlational logic were very fluctuated from 91% to 8%. The results that only 4.8% of elementary students had correct conceptions of a buoyant force suggest that 6th grade students had great difficulties in understanding of that concept. Their difficulties would originated from the frequent common-sense explanations of a buoyant phenomena in terms of the weight or the unique properties or the contact area of an object or with/without air. Furthermore students' explanations, frequently, changed with context of problems of a buoyant force. Scheffe test of quantitative results that elementary students in the concrete level had 50.6% of concept formation in a buoyant force, the transitional level 54.5%, and in the formal operational level 62.8% showed significant differences of conceptions of a buoyant force with cognitive levels. Therefore the concrete operational elementary students had more difficulties of understanding of a buoyant force than the transitional and formal level, which is required to higher cognitive levels. This conclusion have implications that the unit of a buoyant force have to be presented with concrete activities for majority of students who are in concrete and transitional levels.

Significance of Suppressor of Cytokine Signaling-3 Expression in Bladder Urothelial Carcinoma in Relation to Proinflammatory Cytokines and Tumor Histopathological Grading

  • Background: Bladder cancer is among the five most common malignancies worldwide. Altered expression of suppressor of cytokine signaling -3 (SOCS-3) has been implicated in various types of human cancers; however, its role in bladder cancer is not well established. Aim: The present study was undertaken to investigate the mRNA expression of SOCS-3 in normal and cancerous bladder tissue and to explore its correlation with urinary levels of some proinflammatory cytokines, cytokeratin-18 (CK -18) and with tumor histopathological grading, in order to evaluate their role as potential diagnostic markers. Materials and Methods: SOCS3 mRNA expression levels were evaluated using quantitative real time PCR. Urinary levels of interleukins 6 and 8 were estimated by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Cytokeratin-18 expression was analyzed by immuunohistochemistry then validated by ELISA. Results: SOC3 m RNA expression levels were significantly lower in high grade urothelial carcinoma ($0.36{\pm}0.12$) compared to low grade carcinoma ($1.22{\pm}0.38$) and controls ($4.08{\pm}0.88$), (p<0.001). However, in high grade urothelial carcinoma the urinary levels of IL-6, IL-8, total CK-18($221.33{\pm}22.84pg/ml$, $325.2{\pm}53.6pg/ml$, $466.7{\pm}57.40U/L$ respectively) were significantly higher than their levels in low grade carcinoma ($58.6{\pm}18.6pg/ml$, $58.3{\pm}50.2pg/ml$, $185.5{\pm}60.3U/L$ respectively) and controls ($50.9{\pm}23.0pg/ml$, $7.12{\pm}2.74pg/ml$, $106.7{\pm}47.3U/L$ respectively), (p<0.001). Conclusions: Advanced grade of urothelial bladder carcinoma is significantly associated with lowered mRNA expression of SOC3 as well as elevated urinary levels of proinflammatory cytokines and CK-18. Furthermore, our results suggested that urinary IL-8, IL-6 and CK-18 may benefit as noninvasive biomarkers for early detection as well as histopathological subtyping of urothelial carcinoma.

초등학생의 보건교과 수업에 대한 인식과 만족도 (Perception and Satisfaction with Health Education of Elementary Students)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate perception and satisfaction with Health Education for elementary school students in grade 5 and 6, using data on national health education gathered since March, 2009. Methods: Data were collected by way of a questionnaire, from 475 elementary school students in grades 5 and 6 from February 1~15, 2010. Statistical analysis of collected data was performed using frequency, t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis, using SPSS 18.0 software. Result: Levels of health promoting behavior, interest, importance, and satisfaction were relatively high, respectively, and those of students in grade 5 were higher than those of students in grade 6. Levels of Satisfaction with frequency and educational environment were relatively low. Among the factors found to influence satisfaction with health education, interest in health education was found to be the most influential(grade 5:${\beta}$=.279, p<.001, grade 6:${\beta}$=.306, p<.001). Conclusion: Students expressed a high level of satisfaction with regular health education. Expansion of health education frequency and health education-only-classrooms is needed. To improve the effect of health education, constant acquisition of knowledge of subjects' perception and satisfaction is needed. In addition, contents and teaching methods that showed low level of satisfaction should be reformed.

소아 기형종의 임상적 고찰 및 PCNA 발현율에 관한 연구 (Clinical Review and PCNA Expressions of Teratomas in Pediatric Patients)

  • Teratoma contains elements derived from all three embryonic germ layers and mature teratomas are entirely composed of mature differentiated tissues, while immature types always contain additional embryonic tissues of variable degree of immaturity, especially neuroepithelial elements. Twenty cases of teratoma in infancy and childhood were reviewed and the clinical features and pathologic findings including PCNA expression were studied. Sacrococcygeal teratomas were the most common type(45%), followed by retroperitoneal and ovarian teratomas. There was a predilection of females in a ratio of 4:1 and age distribution was most prevalent below the first year of age(45%). But in ovarian teratomas, the age at diagnosis was above 4 years of age in all cases. Serum alpha-fetoprotein levels were checked in 18 cases. In all mature teratomas and 1 of 5 immature teratomas, the levels were normal. But in 4 of 5 immature teratomas, the serum levels were elevated and progressively declined to normal range after mass excision. Radiologically, calcifications in tumor were found in 60.0% of teratomas and was higher in mature teratomas(69.2%) than immature teratomas(42.9%). Immunohistochemical staining for PCNA(proliferating cell nuclear antigen) was done in 16 cases and PCNA expression was higher in grade III immature teratomas than grade I and II. The operative modes were complete mass excisions. Five immature teratomas were treated with multiagent PEB(Bleomycin, Etoposide, Cisplatin) adjuvant chemotherapy, 3 tolerated well without significant complications, but in one case, severe bone marrow suppression was developed and died of sepsis. In conclusion, grade III immature teratoma showed higher PCNA expression than mature or lower grade immature teratoma, which suggests that chemotherapy after surgical excision may be effective modality for grade III immature teratoma. We think, however, multicenter study is necessary because of low incidence of immature teratoma.

Renal Cell Carcinoma is More Aggressive in Turkish Patients with the Metabolic Syndrome

  • Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a multifactorial disease characterized by impaired glucose tolerance/diabetes, obesity, high triglyceride levels, low HDL levels, and hypertension. In this study we evaluate the relationship between tumor size and grade, and presence of the metabolic syndrome in patients with renal cell carcinoma. Materials and Methods: Between 2007-2013, radical nephrectomy was performed for 310 patients with renal tumors in our clinic and those with pathology reported renal cell carcinoma were enrolled and divided into two groups, with and without metabolic syndrome diagnosed on the basis of the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) criteria. The relationship between tumor size and grade of the two groups (Fuhrman nuclear degree) was evaluated statistically. Results: The metabolic syndrome was found in 70 patients, with a mean age of 65.5 (40-87), as compared to 58.8 (31-84) years in the non-metabolic syndrome group. Tumor size over 7 cm was found in 54% and 33%, respectively, and tumor grade over Fuhrman 3 in 56% and 32% of patients. Patients with metabolic syndrome had significantly higher tumor size and grade (p<0.05). In the presence of hypertension, diabetes and high triglyceride levels, significant assocations were again observed (p<0.05). Tumor size and degree also increased with increasing body mass index but this was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Conclusions: Renal cancer is more aggressive in patients with metabolic syndrome. Lifestyle and risk factors were revealed to be significant influences in renal cancer patients.

아동의 비만스트레스가 우울에 미치는 영향에 대한 자아탄력성의 중재효과 (The Mediating Effects of Ego-Resiliency on the Relationship between Child's Obsesity Stress and Depression)

  • This study examined the relationships between children's stress about obsesity and depression. In order to expand the study on the relationships, special attention was given to the possible moderator effects of child's ego-resiliency. The subjects were 494 4th and 6th graders residing in Seoul. It was found that 6th grade children's stress about obesity and depression was higher more than 4th graders in every boys and girls. Otherwise, 4th grade children's ego resiliency more higher in girls, 6th grade children's ego resiliency more higher in boysn. Children's stress about obesity was significantly related with the levels of childre's depression. The results indicated that children's higher obesity stress was related to higher levels of children's depression. Children's ego resiliency were found to be a significant moderator of relationship between children's obesity stress and depression. These findings indicated that children's ego resiliency could fuction as a protecting factor for children who perceive obesity stress.

고등학교 2학년 학생들의 인지수준과 화학 I 교과서 내용이 요구하는 인지수준 비교 분석 (A Comparative Analysis of Cognitive Levels of 11th Grade Students and Cognitive Levels Required by High School Chemistry I Textbooks)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 고등학교 2학년 학생들의 인지수준과 제7차 교육과정에 의한 화학I 교과서 내용이 요구하는 인지수준을 비교 분석하는 것이었다. 연구를 위하여 고등학교 2학년 학생 456명을 대상으로 GALT 축소본을 이용하여 인지수준을 조사하였으며, 제7차 교육과정에 의한 화학I 교과서의 물과 공기 두 개 단원에서 15개의 과학 개념을 추출하고, CAT 분석틀을 이용하여 화학I 교과서 내용이 요구하는 인지수준을 분석하였다. 연구 결과에 의하면 고등학교 2학년 학생들의 52.5%가 형식적 조작기 수준에 도달했으며, 28.3%의 학생들은 과도기 수준에, 나머지 19.5%의 학생들은 구체적 조작기 수준에 있었다. 인문계 고등학교 학생의 68.9%, 공업계 고등학교 학생의 6.6%가 형식적 조작기 수준에 도달하였고, 논리 유형별 형성정도도 계열별 차이가 매우 컸다. 제7차 교육과정에 의한 화학I 교과서의 내용을 이해하는데 필요한 인지수준을 분석한 결과, 일부 탐구 활동의 경우를 제외하고는 교육과정의 변화에도 과학 개념의 인지요구도는 크게 변화하지 않았다. 제7차 교육과정에 의한 화학I 교과서에 제시된 과학 개념의 인지수준은 고등학교 2학년 학생들의 인지수준에 비해 높은 편이었으나, 탐구 활동의 인지수준은 고등학교 2학년 학생들의 인지수준과 비슷한 편이었다. 현직 화학 교사들은 제7차 교육과정에 의한 화학I 교과서가 제6차 교육과정의 화학I 교과서에 비해서 내용 축소와 실생활 소재를 많이 반영하고 있는 것을 바람직하다고 생각하였으나, 과학 개념이 너무 축소되어 화학I 교과서와 화학II 교과서 사이의 내용 수준에 차이가 많이 나는 것을 문제점으로 지적하였다. 제7차 교육과정에 의한 화학I 교과서 내용이 형식적 조작기 수준을 많이 요구하고 있으므로, 고등학생들의 인지수준에 맞는 다양한 교수-학습 방법과 교재가 개발되어야 한다고 생각한다.

2007년 개정 3, 4학년 1학기 교사용 지도서 및 실험 관찰에 제시된 그림그리기 활동과 학습 결과 분석 (An Analysis of Students' Drawing Outcomes and Drawing Activities in the First Term of 3~4th Grade Teacher's Guide and Supplementary Books Developed under the 2007 National Curriculum)

  • In this study, we analyzed request methods and demanding levels of drawing activities in teacher's guide and supplementary book (experimental observation). Student's drawing results were also compared to teacher's guide and supplementary books demanding. As a result, drawing activities of supplementary book were reached to 42.8% of all activities. Activity types were divided to writing, drawing, writing and drawing and writing or drawing activities. Writing and drawing activity type was 44.4%, and drawing activity was 37.8%. The level of teacher's guide were higher than normal needs. But answer examples and learning levels of teacher's guide were appropriate for curriculum levels. The students drawing activities were matched to requirements of the teacher's guide to 72.3% in grade 3 level and 64.5% in 4th grade level. In order to improve effectively learning, statement of supplementary book and teacher's guide should write more concrete words and creative sentences.
