  • Visual quality of video telephony over 3G networks is not satisfactory due to limited bandwidths. Therefore, it is worthwhile to enhance subjective visual quality based on ROI coding. In this paper, we propose a rate-control algorithm for video telephony with ROI based H.264|AVC coding. The QP values are increasingly assigned in non-ROI away from the ROI so that graceful degradation of visual quality can be achieved, which is more visually pleasant.

  • It is not easy to apply fault-tolerant techniques which are used in conventional computer systems successfully to the field of embedded computing system directly. In this paper, we study on the way of minimizing hardware and/or software backups for vehicle embedded computing systems. First, we group parts that constitute vehicle embedded systems and next feature subset is determined using the grouping information derived. The possibility of implementing graceful degradation capability in vehicle embedded systems is verified.

  • In recent years, expansions and advances of the Internet of Things (IoTs) in a distributed MMOGs (massively multiplayer online games) architecture have resulted in massive growth of data in terms of server workloads. We propose a combing Sparse Autoencoder and one of platforms in MMOGs, ProGReGA. In the process of Sparse Autoencoder, data representation with respect to enhancing the feature is excluded from this set of data. In the process of load balance, the graceful degradation of ProGReGA can exploit the most relevant and less redundant feature of the data representation. We find out that the proposed algorithm have become more stable.

  • AESA radar is able to instantaneously and adaptively position and control the beam, and this enables to have interleaved mode in modern airborne AESA radar which can maximize situational awareness capability. Interleaved mode provides two or more modes simultaneously, such as Air to Air mode and Sea Surface mode by time sharing technique. In this interleaved mode, performance degradation is inevitable, compared with single mode operation, and effective resource allocation is the key component for the success of interleaved mode. In this paper, we identified performance evaluation items for each mode to analyze interleaved mode performance and proposed effective resource allocation methodology to achieve graceful performance degradation of each mode, focusing on detection range. We also proposed beam scheduling techniques for interleaved mode.

  • The scheduling problem in parallel processing systems has been a challenging research issue for decades. The problem is defined as finding an optimal schedule which minimizes the parallel execution time of an application on a target multiprocessor system. Duplication Based Scheduling (DBS) is a relatively new approach for solving the problem. The DBS algorithms are capable of reducing communication overhead by duplicating remote parent tasks on local processors. Most of DBS algorithms assume an availability of the unlimited number of processors in the system. Since the assumption may net hold in practice, the paper proposes a new scalable DBS algorithm for a target system with limited number of processors. It Is shown that the proposed algorithm with N available processors generates the same schedule as that obtained by the algorithm with unlimited number of processors, where N is the number of input tasks. Also, the performance evaluation reveals that the proposed algorithm shows a graceful performance degradation as the number of available processors in the system is decreased.

  • As embedded system has strict cost and space constraints, it is impossible to apply conventional fault-tolerant techniques directly for increasing the dependability of embedded system. In this paper, we propose software fault-tolerant mechanism which requires only minimum redundancy of system component. We define an utility metric that reflects the dependability of each embedded system component, and then measure the defined utility of each reconfiguration combinations to provide fault tolerance. The proposed utility evaluation process shows exponential complexity. However we reduce the complexity by hierachical subgrouping at the software level of each component. When some components of embedded system are tailed, reconfiguration operation changes the system state from current faulty state to pre-calculated one which has maximum utility combination.

  • Wireless sensor networks are usually characterized by dense deployment of energy constrained nodes. Due to the usage of a large number of sensor nodes in uncontrolled hostile or harsh environments, node failure is a common event in these systems. Another common reason for node failure is the exhaustion of their energy resources and node inactivation. Such failures can have adverse effects on the quality of the real-time services in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). To avoid such degradations, it is necessary that the failures be recovered in a proper manner to sustain network operation. In this paper we present a dynamic Energy efficient Real-Time Job Allocation (ERTJA) algorithm for handling node failures in a cluster of sensor nodes with the consideration of communication energy and time overheads besides the nodes' characteristics. ERTJA relies on the computation power of cluster members for handling a node failure. It also tries to minimize the energy consumption of the cluster by minimum activation of the sleeping nodes. The resulting system can then guarantee the Quality of Service (QoS) of the cluster application. Further, when the number of sleeping nodes is limited, the proposed algorithm uses the idle times of the active nodes to engage a graceful QoS degradation in the cluster. Simulation results show significant performance improvements of ERTJA in terms of the energy conservation and the probability of meeting deadlines compared with the other studied algorithms.

  • An improved backoff algorithm for retransmission randomization for OFDMA/CDMA/slotted ALOHA used in the ranging subchannel of IEEE 802.16 network is proposed. Exploiting the fact that a base station coordinates channel access using UL-/DL-MAP in the IEEE 802.16 networks, we propose a minor modification of the existing IEEE 802.16 in order to increase throughput, decrease delay variation and achieve a graceful performance degradation in case of overload channel condition of the random access protocol. The algorithm basically estimates the number of backlogged users and arrival rate using which, the BS calculates retransmission probability for the subscriber stations involved in a collision. Computer simulation is performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and to compare the performance with existing binary exponential backoff algorithm.

  • Since database management systems(DBMSS) have limited lock resources, transactions requesting locks beyond the limit mutt be aborted. In the worst carte, if such transactions are aborted repeatedly, the DBMS can become paralyzed, i.e., transaction execute but cannot commit. Lock escalation is considered a solution to this problem. However, existing lock escalation methods do not provide a complete solution. In this paper, we prognose a new lock escalation method, adaptive lock escalation, that selves most of the problems. First, we propose a general model for lock escalation and present the concept of the unescalatable look, which is the major cause making the transactions to abort. Second, we propose the notions of semi lock escalation, lock blocking, and selective relief as the mechanisms to control the number of unescalatable locks. We then propose the adaptive lock escalation method using these notions. Adaptive lock escalation reduces needless aborts and guarantees that the DBMS is not paralyzed under excessive lock requests. It also allows graceful degradation of performance under those circumstances. Third, through extensive simulation, we show that adaptive lock escalation outperforms existing lock escalation methods. The results show that, compared to the existing methods, adaptive lock escalation reduces the number of aborts and the average response time, and increases the throughput to a great extent. Especially, it is shown that the number of concurrent transactions can be increased more than 16 ~256 fold. The contribution of this paper is significant in that it has formally analysed the role of lock escalation in lock resource management and identified the detailed underlying mechanisms. Existing lock escalation methods rely on users or system administrator to handle the problems of excessive lock requests. In contrast, adaptive lock escalation releases the users of this responsibility by providing graceful degradation and preventing system paralysis through automatic control of unescalatable locks Thus adaptive lock escalation can contribute to developing self-tuning: DBMSS that draw a lot of attention these days.
