  • Free vibration characteristics of a curved pipe conveying fluid is studied when the pipe is clamped at both ends. Using the perturbation method, the non-linear governing equations divided into two parts; the steady state non-linear equilibrium equations and the linearized equations of motion in the neighborhood of the equilibrium position. The natural frequencies are computed from the linearized equations of motion. In this study, the equilibrium positions are determined by two types of equations, i.e., (1) the non-linear equations, and (2) the equations obtained by neglecting the non-linear terms. The natural frequencies obtained from the non-linear equilibrium equations are compared to those obtained from the linearized equilibrium equations. From the results, as the fluid velocity increases, the equilibrium position should be determined from the nonlinear equations for the vibration analysis of the curved pipe conveying fluid.

  • In this study, dynamic characteristics of an end-capped hull structure with surface bonded piezoelectric actuators are studied. Finite element modeling is used to obtain practical governing equation of motion and boundary conditions of smart hull structure. Modal analysis is conducted to investigate the dynamic characteristics of the hull structure. Piezoelectric actuators are attached where the maximum control performance can be obtained. Active controller based on Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) theory is designed to suppress vibration of smart hull structure. It is observed that closed loop damping can be improved with suitable weighting factors in the developed LQG controller.

  • This paper presents a new type of jetting dispenser for the integrated circuit (IC) fabrication and surface mount technology The proposed system is featured by the piezoelectric actuator and hydraulic magnification device. After describing structural component of the dispensing mechanism and its operation principle, both the fluid modeling and the hydraulic magnification modeling are undertaken with a lumped-parameter method based on the analogy of the fluid system and mechanical system. A mathematical governing equation is then derived by integrating the fluid model with the mechanical model of the driving piston and piezoelectric actuator. Subsequently, in order to achieve a desired dispensing amount, control algorithm adjusting duty cycle of the driving voltage is synthesized and control responses are presented in time domain.

  • A new BWIM(bridge weigh-in-motion) algorithm using both measured strain and acceleration data is proposed. To consider the effects of bridge vibration on the estimation of moving loads, the dynamic governing equation is applied with the known stiffness and mass properties but damping is ignored. Dynamic displacements are computed indirectly from the measured strains using the beam theory and accelerations are measured directly by accelerometers. To convert a unit moving load to its equivalent nodal force, a transformation matrix is determined. The incompleteness in the measured responses is considered in developing the algorithm. To examine the proposed BWIM algorithm, simulation studies, laboratory experiments and field tests were carried. In the simulation study, effects of measurement noise and estimation error in the vehicle speed on the results were investigated.

  • This paper presents an inertia type of piezostack based active mount for unmanned aero vehicle (UAV) camera system. After identifying the stiffness and damping properties of the rubber element and piezostack a mechanical model of the active mount system is established. The governing equation of mount is them derived and expressed in a state space farm. Subsequently, a sliding mode controller which is robust to uncertain parameters is designed in order to reduce the vibration imposed according to the military specification associated with UAV camera mount system operation. Control performances such as acceleration and transmitted force are evaluated through both computer simulation and experimental implementation.

  • This paper presents robust control performance of a direct current(DC) motor with brake system adopting a giant electrorheological(GER) fluid, whose distinguished feature is an extremely high value of yield stress. As a first step, Bingham characteristics of the GER fluid is experimentally investigated using the Couette type electroviscometer. A cylindrical type of ER brake is then devised based on the Bingham model, and its braking torque is evaluated. Structural analysis of ER break is performed using ANSYS. After formulating the governing equation of motion for the DC motor with ER brake system, a sliding mode control algorithm, which is very robust to external disturbances and parameter uncertainties, is synthesized and experimentally realized in order to achieve desired rotational speed trajectories. The tracking responses of the control system are then evaluated and verified by presenting speed control performance.

  • This paper presents the position tracking control of a closed-loop cylinder system using electro-rheological (ER) valve actuators. After manufacturing three sets of cylindrical ER valves on the basis of Bingham model of ER fluid, a 3 dof(degree-freedom) closed-loop cylinder system having the heave, roll and pitch motions is constructed. The governing equations of motion are derived using Lagrange's equation and a control model is formulated by considering nonlinear characteristics of the system, Sliding mode controllers are the designed for these ER valve actuators in order to achieve position tracking control. The effectiveness of trajectory tracking control performance of the proposed cylinder system is demonstrated through computer simulation and experimental implementation of the sliding mode controller.

  • This study presents model synthesis and performance investigation of a new brake system using electro-rheological(ER) fluids. Field-dependent Bingham properties characterized by non-zero yield stresses of the ER fluids are experimentally distilled. These properties are then incorporated with the governing equation of the proposed brake system which features design simplicity, fast response and salient controllability. After analyzing system performance with respect to design parameters such as electrode gap and length, an appropriate size of the brake is designed and fabricated. Both simulation and experimental works are undertaken in order to determine the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed brake system. The system performances are justified by evaluating field-dependent braking torques as well as braking times.

  • This paper presents design.dynamic modeling and control issues of a novel type of an ER valve-cylinder system incorporating with an electro-rheological(ER) fluid. The yield stress of the ER fluid to be employed to the proposed system is evaluated as a function of applied electric fields. The design and manufacturing process of the ER valve which features fast system response and simple mechanism are undertaken on the basis of model parameters. The governing equation for the hydraulic and pneumatic model is constructed by incorporation with the field-dependent Bingham behavior of the ER fluid. An effective neuro controller is proposed to realize an accurate position control.

  • A scroll compressor is on the increase in the use for the cooling and ambition machinery because of the advantages about high efficiency, low vibration and low noise. The design of thrust bearing for scroll compressor has depended on the experience. The lubrication considering the squeeze flow was applied for high side shell and low side shell of scroll thrust bearing. This work was based on governing fluid lubrication equation at the general coordinate. It shows the behavior for an orbiting scroll with direct numerical analysis using FDM. This study obtained the theoretical design value by finding load capacity and tilting angle of an orbiting scroll for thrust bearing in a scroll compressor. Especially this work performed the analysis about the design parameter. The program was written using Visual C++ to enhance user to change the design parameter easily. In particular the result value and the pressure profile were displayed as windows in every step for user to understand without difficulty.
