  • Mark Twain's works are very good texts for students' understanding of American literature and culture deeply and comprehensively, However, professors teaching Mark Twain could be confronted with several problems: how to teach vernacular language in his works; how to deal with the massive volume; how to teach various issues systematically. This article aims to present a way to solve these problems, based on my experiences of teaching Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court in novel classes. One of good methods of discussing the various issues systematically in his works is focusing on his contemporary dominant discourses and his critiques on them. In teaching Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the black discourse is the comtemporary dominant dicourse to concentrate on. I tried to discuss various issues in my classes, mainly relating them to exploring how Twain was contained in his contemporary black discourse and how he resisted it at the same time. The representation of the blacks in the work is a good example to show this. To what extent Huck can have human relationship with Jim is an important question to contest his interaction with his contemporary discourse. In my paper I examine various issues and problems I was faced with in the classes. In teaching A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, the crucial discourses are industrialism and modernity. Here, what must be paid attention to is that although industrialism is a part of modernity, it is convenient to deal it separately from the issue of modernity. Twain was dominated by those discourses, but he criticized them on the other hand. Various issues can be discussed, related with the question how much he was contained in the discourse of modernity and how much he criticized it. Students' understanding of this work and his contemporary dominant discourses can be enhanced by discussing his ambivalence toward modernization, democracy. and the Medieval feudalism.

  • On the standards or elements of teaching evaluation, the Korea Institute of Curriculum and Evaluation(KICE) has carried out several research as follows : 1) establishment of observation elements for selecting examples of good instruction between 2001 and 2002, 2) development of the standards on teaching evaluation between 2004 and 2006, and 3) investigation on the elements of Pedagogical Content Knowledge including Subject Matter Knowledge between 2007 and 2008. The purpose of development of mathematics teaching evaluation standards through those studies were to improve not only mathematics teachers' professionalism but also their own teaching methods or strategies. Especially, the standards on mathematics teaching evaluation were developed based on the standards on general teaching evaluation. In this study, the standards were revised and modified by analyzing the results of those studies (namely, evaluation standards) focused on SMK. For this purpose, four domains such as the knowledge of curriculum reconstruction, knowledge of mathematical contents, methodological knowledge, mathematical value were new established based on the theories relevant to SMK and on the base of these four domains, standards or elements on teaching evaluation focused on SMK were reconstructed.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics of secondary science teachers' thoughts on 'good' science teaching and to find a concept that can represent the way the teachers think. Participants were twenty pre- and in-service teachers who were enrolled in a graduate course I taught at a university located in Seoul in the first semester, 2011. The participating teachers collected and analyzed a variety of data and created portfolios while they were trained, as part of the course, on qualitative research methods with the same research questions as those of this study. In the current study, the process in which the teachers and I found answers to the research questions was narratively reconstructed based on the teachers' portfolios and my field notes. It was revealed that science teaching was perceived as a task aiming at realizing some kind of values and that because the teachers pursued various values in the science classroom and there exist conflicting relationships among different values, it was hard to define 'good' science teaching. It was also discussed that science instruction was inherently accompanied with the ongoing process of selecting values as the relationships among the values were ever-changing within the contexts of the classroom. This multi-faceted and dynamic structure of the teachers' thoughts on 'good' science teaching was conceptualized analogically as 'Foucault's pendulum,' which has multiple planes of oscillation. Implications for science teacher education and science education research were suggested.

  • The effectiveness of mathematics classroom teaching is directly affected by the teaching language. Comparing the teaching language of a novice teacher in algebra instruction with an expert teacher from the perspective of pragmatics, it comes to a conclusion that: both teachers attach great importance to the use of the teaching language, with the proportion of the teaching language time more than 50%; the novice teacher uses the affirmative language frequently, twice as often as the expert teacher; the declarative language the novice teacher uses in the exploration is mostly to repeat students' answer, which takes up a short time; the novice teacher uses the teaching language too much in the consolidation, which causes fewer opportunities for students to think. Then we get the following revelations: streamline the teaching language and control the time of the teaching language reasonably; make good use of the affirmative language to provide students hints and necessary time for thinking; avoid simple restatement of the student's answer and use the declarative language ingeniously to improve the feedback quality; use the teaching language appropriately to help students accumulate basic experience in mathematics activities.
