  • In reliability and life testing the mean residual life (MRL) of an item plays a significant role. While there has been a great deal of discussion on the theoretical aspects of the MRL, good estimators of MRL have been difficult to obtain. In this paper we propose a new estimator of the MRL of items at a given age, which is especially good for a small sample. The new estimator compares favorably with the empirical MRL estimator for small samples.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to assess the awareness of good Samaritan law and attitude toward basic life support (BLS) of university students. Methods: A 29-item questionnaire survey was conducted among 147 students in A university. The participants were freshmen and sophomores who had received cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training in middle or high school. Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS 21.0. Results: The majority (85%) of the participants knew about the good Samaritan clause in the Emergency Medical Service Act, but only about half (58.5%) knew about the Non-rescuer Act. Almost all of the patients said they would administer CPR to patients and showed a positive attitude toward BLS (3.74±0.40). Conclusion: Greater help attitude was exhibited by those who knew the good Samaritan law. These findings suggested that such education may increase their likelihood or helping in emergencies.

  • This study intends to suggest basic data for the activation of rural activities in dietary life education, through a survey of adolescents on rural activities in dietary life education. It was found that 63.2% of subject students had the experience of rural activities; and that as many as 35.2% among the students who experienced rural activities participated in the activities 5 times or more. And the survey showed that rural activities were led most frequently by a teacher in charge (37.9%), and rather rarely by a nutrition teacher (15.4%) or an expert in dietary life education (7.7%). As for food ingredients that adolescents experienced during rural activities, they were composed of easily available good cookers that are common in the Korean diet, and, among them, vegetables were experienced most, followed by cereals and fruits. On the other hand, as for food ingredients preferred by adolescents, it was found that boy students preferred meat, while girl students preferred fruits. And as for improvements in dietary life, it was found that making efforts to have good dietary habits had the highest score, which shows that rural activities contributed to the improvement in adolescents' dietary life. Therefore, given the fact that rural activities go some way towards improving adolescents' dietary life, it is advisable that more opportunities for experiencing rural activities be provided to adolescents in the future so as to help them have good dietary habits.

  • Purpose: The objectives of this study were to investigate the level of meaning in life(MIL) among university students as well as identify the effects of death perception, including good death and concerns about dying, and self-esteem on MIL. Methods: A questionnaire survey was developed and carried out using a convenient sampling method (N=301). Data were analyzed by applying descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The average score for MIL was 4.70 on a 7-point scale. The factor of purpose of life received highest score among all factors in MIL. MIL was positively correlated with age, good death, and self-esteem. However, concerns about dying were negatively correlated with MIL. MIL showed a strong association with self-esteem(r=.72). Specifically, self-esteem(${\beta}$=.608), satisfaction of school life(${\beta}$=.190), relationship with parents(${\beta}$=.180), good death(${\beta}$=.080), school grades(${\beta}$=.078), and age(${\beta}$=.074) all significantly influenced MIL. These variables accounted for 61.0% of the total variance. Conclusion: The results show that self-esteem is an important factor for MIL among university students. Therefore, self-esteem should be carefully considered to increase their MIL. These research findings can be utilized to support programs such as counseling and education of university students.

  • The purpose of this study was to illuminate the ways to im-prove the level of life satisfaction of the elderly who chose or happened to live at paid facilities by examining some of factors such as individual family social support and facility related el-ements that would influence their life satisfaction. The interview outcomes came out in three main discussions. First the general characteristics of the participating elderly appeared to be that most of them were ver7y elderly relatively highly educated females and religions and the rate of being ill was high. And a half of them considered themselves as heal- thy people and the other half as unhealthy. Secondly in view of statisticsal results the level of their life satisfaction was influnced by their individual family and facillity related factors. As far as their individual related factor are concerned the level of one party's life satisfaction was relative-ely higher than that of other's when the person is female had religio presumed oneself as in healthy and good physical condition. And when participating member keeps good relation-ship with his or her own children the level of the person's life satisfaction was only slightly higher than other elderly group who did not have good relationship with their children. There were no other significant statistical differences on the level of their life satisfaction related to the social support factors between those two group. Thirdly the level of the elderly's life satisfaction was influe- nced in the order of folldwing factors: (1) the quality of facility living condition 2) the commitment of ownership of the organization (3) the elderly residents' own education level (4) the elderly's own subjectivel health condition and (5) the sex of the individuals.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to construct a structural model to explain the quality of life of grandmothers caring for their grandchildren. Method: Data were collected by self-report questionnaires from 232 grandmothers caring for their grandchildren living in Busan. The data collection period was from June to Oct. 2006. Data analysis was done with SAS 9.13 for descriptive statistics and PC-LISREL 8.52 program for Covariance Structural analysis. Results: The findings found that the fit of the hypothetical model to the data was good, but considering theoretical implications and statistical significances of parameter estimates, paths and variables of the model were modified by excluding 2 paths. The Modified Model with 17 paths showed a good fitness to the empirical data ($X^2=15.492$ (df=11, p=.161), GFI=.985 AGFI=.940 NFI=.982 RMSR=.037 RMSEA=.042). Health status, health problems, economical status, life events, caring stress, caring efficacy and life satisfaction had significant effects on quality of life in the grandmother caring their grandchildren, but of these variables, self-esteem was the most essential factor. All predictive variables of quality of life together explained 63.9% of the variance. Conclusion: The derived model in this study was confirmed to be proper in explaining and predicting the quality of life of the grandmothers caring their grandchildren.
