Seasonal variations in carbon dioxide in the air and soil organic carbon in the sediments were monitored at the constructed wetland formed by reclamation work at Goheung Bay. Sediment sampling in the constructed wetland and carbon dioxide measurement in the air were conducted on June 16 and August 23, 2007. Sediments in the constructed wetland were sampled at 11 different points (June 16) and 14 points (August 23), while carbon dioxide in the air was measured at 13 points (June 16) and 15 points (August 23). Water content and organic carbon in the sampled sediments were analyzed in the laboratory. Water content of the sediments was higher than that of general soil, and the variation between June and August was not evident. The amounts of organic carbons in the sediments sampled on August 23 were higher than those sampled on June 16. Also, there was more organic carbon in the sediments sampled at the field of reeds than in the pure wetland area. Daily maximum variation in carbon dioxide in the air was higher on June 16, but the amount of carbon dioxide in the air was greater on August 23. The results of the study suggest that organic carbon in the sediments and carbon dioxide in the air were greater in summer (August 23) than in spring season (June 16) in the constructed wetland at Goheung Bay.
On the basis of factor analysis, stations were grouped according to their similar characteristics of seawater quality. The data for factor analysis were collected from the 15 stations from Dukryang Bay to Ulsan Bay on the southern cost of Korea. The study was based on the data from 1991 to 2000. The 8 water quality items analyzed were temperature, salinity, pH, DO, COD, DIN (dissolved inorganic nitrogen), DIP (dissolved inorganic phosphorus), and SS (suspended solid). Analysis of 6 water quality items including DO with the exception of temperature and salinity showed that 15 stations were grouped into two zones, i.e., the western and the eastern coast, by the axis of Samcheonpo-Jinju Bay-south of Geoje, 3 seawater zones in all. The adjacent stations to the southward or northward but not those to the eastward or westward were classified into the same group. On the analysis of all of the 8 water quality items, the stations of Dukryang Bay and Goheung; and those of Onsan and Ulsan Bay were classified into the same group. Yeosu and Namhae stations were sectioned into 1 group on the all seawater quality items but DIP, Samcheonpo and south of Geoje stations another group on all seawater quality items but water temperature, and Masan and Busan stations in the other group on all seawater quality items but DO. The stations from Dukryang Bay through Goheung to east of Geoje were grouped together on the COD item, and this showed somewhat different tendency in other seawater quality items.
It was studied on the choice of potential area for red tide occurrence from oceanographic factors. Oceanographic factors of favorable marine environmental conditions for the red tide formation included warm water temperature, low salinity, high suspended solid, low phosphorus, low nitrogen. It was founded the potential areas for red tide occurrence in August 2000 by GIS conception: Yeosu~Dolsan coast, Gamak bay, Namhae coast, Marado coast, Goheung coast, Deukryang bay, respectively.
Evapotranspiration is an important factor in the energy interaction process between the surface and the air. Over a vegetable canopy, evapotranspiration was investigated by measuring the sensible heat flux, the soil heat flux and the net radiation flux. Evapotranspiration based on routine AWS data is in good agreement with that estimated from the energy balance equation except for weak wind shear less than $1s^{-1}$ and a cloudy period. Soil heat flux can be approximately to 10% of net radiation flux at the lower layer. When the slope of the saturation vapor pressure versus temperature curve ($de_s/dT$) is approximated to 1.5, the evapotranspiration can be described in function of the net radiation energy flux over Goheung bay wetland covered with the vegetable canopy, reeds.

Meorological data have been collected to monitor the wetland area in Goheung bay since 2003 and four intensive observations were conducted to study effects of the atmospheric turbulence on the energy budget and the ecological changes. We improved an algorithm to estimate the sensible heat flux with routine data. The sensible heat flux estimated by gradient method was in good agreement with that measured by precision instruments such as surface layer scintillometer and ultrasonic anemometer. Diurnal variations of sensible heat flux showed analogous tendency to those of temperature gradient. When the vertical wind shear of horizontal wind components was weak, even though temperature gradient was strong, the gradient method underestimated the sensible heat flux. A compensation for the cloud will make this gradient method be a helpful tool to monitor the ecosystem without expensive instruments except for weak wind shear and temperature gradient.
Seagrass meadows are important biogenic habitats for a wide variety of marine animals and plants, a source of organic carbon for commercially important animals, and act as a nutrient filter in estuarine and coastal ecosystems. As such, mapping the distribution of seagrass beds provides us with an important component of management and conservation strategies. To survey seagrass distribution within Deukryang Bay, we directly observed seagrass beds using SCUBA in Boseong-gun, Goheung-gun, and Jangheung-gun. Seagrass distribution in Geogeum and Gumdang islands were not observed. Specifically, we monitored the distribution area, species composition, morphology, density, and biomass of seagrass meadows. Seagarss beds were mapped for Daikum-ri coast, Deukryang island, Yongjeong-ri coast, Samsan-ri coast and Ongam-ri coast. Total seagrass coverage in Deukryang Bay was $5.1\;km^2$, $4.8\;km^2$ of which was Zostera marina, $0.3\;km^2$ Z. caulescence and $0.01\;km^2$ Z. japonica. Z. japonica was found in intertidal zones, Z. marina was found from the intertidal to subtidal zones of 2 m MSL (mean sea level) depth, and Z. caulescence was found in subtidal zones of 2.5-5 m MSL.
This study monitored marine environments and ecological characteristics of phytoplankton in southern coastal waters during June to October in 2004-2006 and provided an information to how Cochlodinium blooms have occurred. A total of sampling sites was 16 (Dukyang bay, Goheung, Yeoja bay, Gamak bay, Gwangyang bay, Yeosu, and Namhae). Temperature ranged from $19^{\circ}C\;to\;29^{\circ}C$, which all of sampling in Yeoja bay was the highest temperature of $27^{\circ}C\;and\;29^{\circ}C$ during summer. On June, July, September, and October did not show a remarkable difference regardless of sampling sites. Yeoja and Gwangyang bays had 25-27 in salinity that was lower approximately 5-6 compared with other sampling sites. Chlorophyll had considerable fluctuations depending on sampling sites on July and October, in particular, Gwangyang bay was the highest value of $15{\mu}gl^{-1}$ that had five times as much as. Unlikely to temperature, salinity, and chlorophyll, transparency ranged from 2 m to 5 m regardless of sampling sites. Gwangyang bay was the highest DIN (Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen) of $0.53mgl^{-1}$ on July and August that had ten times as much as, whereas DIP (Dissolved Inorganic Phosphorus) did not show a significant difference between sampling sites. On July, the correlation of DIN and chlorophyll was a negative that should extremely require DIN to grow phytoplankton, but was a positive liner on August. Mean cell number of phytoplankton reached to encounter a peak of 500 cells $ml^{-1}$ in July and August, which diatoms were dominant species and attained an abundance of >60% regardless of months. In August, the occurrence of dinoflagellates ranged from 20% to 30%. Skeletonema costatum, one of dominant speicies, was the highest occurrence to throughout sampling sites during 2004 to 2006. On the basis of cluster analysis for phytoplankton, they were distributed in all of sampling sites. Consequently, significant fluctuations of marine environments were shown in summer and S. costatum was regarded as the representive phytoplankton in southern coastal waters. In particular, the outbreaks of Cochlodinium polykrikoides have occurred in Dukyang bay, Gamak bay, Goheung, Yeosu, and Namhae, but Yeoja and Gwangyang bays did not occur. The distinguish characteristics of occurring sampling sites and non-occurring in Cochlodinium blooms based on this study was DIN that was enough to persistently grow and maintain them even a litter dissolved in water. This suggests that Cochlodinium red tide seems to be occur in off waters.
It was studied the relationship between the red tide occurrence and the meteorological and oceanographic factors, the choice of potential area for red tide occurrence, and the satellite monitoring for red tide. From 1990 through 2001, the red tide continuously appeared and the number of red tide occurrence increased every year. Then, the red tide bloomed during the periods of July and August. An important meteorological factor governing the mechanisms of the increasing in number of red tide occurrence was heavy precipitation. Oceanographic factors of favorable marine environmental conditions for the red tide formation included warm water temperature, low salinity, high suspended solid, low phosphorus, low nitrogen. A common condition for the red tide occurrence was heavy precipitation 2∼4 days earlier, and the favorable conditions for the red tide formation were high air temperature, proper sunshine and light winds for the day in red tide occurrence. From satellite images, it was possible to monitor the spatial distributions and concentrations of red tide. It was founded the potential areas for red tide occurrence in August 2000 by CIS conception: Yeosu∼Dolsan coast, Gamak bay, Namhae coast, Marado coast, Goheung coast, Deukryang bay, respectively.
To understand the marine algal flora on Goheung coast, Korea, marine algae at 8 points were collected from November 2008 to February 2009 and from April to June 2009. Thirty-seven species (2 species of angiosperms, 5 chlorophytes, 12 phaeophytes, and 18 rhodophytes) occurred from fall to winter and 52 species (2 species of angiosperms, 9 chlorophytes, 18 phaeophytes, and 23 rhodophytes) occurred from spring to summer. Commonly occurring species were Ulva pertusa, Sargassum thunbergii, Hizikia fuziformis, and Gelidium amansii, and dominant species at most points were Ulva pertusa, Sargassum thunbergii, and Gelidium amansii. The average of the ratio of total rhodophytes and chlorophytes to phaeophytes ((R+C)/P) was 1.61 in fall to winter and 1.69 in spring to summer, and the average Laminariales/Fucales/Dictyotales (LFD) ratio was 1.14 in fall to winter and 1.18 in spring to summer. These results show that the marine algal flora of Goheung could be considered as temperate. The LFD ratio was fit for showing a feature of algal flora of Goheung. Species diversity index was high at Points 4~6 while low at Points 1 and 8. Detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) showed that the similarity of occurring species at Points 3 and 4 was higher than the other points from fall to winter, whereas the occurred species at Points 1~4 were similar from spring to summer. The average values of ecological evaluation index (EEI) of the investigation points were 6.8 from fall to winter and 6.3 from spring to summer, which means that the ecological environment of the investigation points were middle class and the EEI values of outer sea points were higher than the inner bay points.
Larval distribution of bivalve from 29 stations in Deukryang Bay was examined from May to November in 1995. The abundance of total larvae increased from May ($3,736\;inds/m^3$) and reached maximum in August ($174,616\;inds/m^3$). But it decreased continuously until November ($2,171\;inds/m^3$). D-shape, early umbone and advanced umbone stage larvae composed of 76%, 18% and 6%, respectively, of total bivalve larvae. Nine larval species of bivalve were identified in this study. The mean abundance of Scapharca subcrenata larvae was $14,030\;inds/m^3$, which was 33.5% of total identified larvae. S. broughtonii (16.2%), Crassostrea gigas (12.5%), Mytilus edulis (10.2%) were also major species in order of their abundance. Considering the monthly larval occurrence in Deukryang Bay, main spawning month of bivalves except M. edulis and M. senhausia was estimated as July. Even though the spatial distribution of bivalve larvae in Deukryang Bay was different by the species, the larvae were generally abundant in the inner and west area of the bay, where was shallower and higher water temperature than the entrance and east area of the bay.
