KAERI Underground Research Tunnel (KURT) was recently constructed through the site investigation from the yea. of 2003 at KAERI site, Dukjin-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon city. The geo-logic setting of the site has been slightly metamorphosed. There are small fractures developed in the rock and several kinds of secondary filling minerals exist in the fractures. We examined mineralogical characteristics of fracture-filling calcite, which is not only largely distributed, but also can significantly affect the radionuclides migration. The calcite is found along fractures like other secondary minerals, forming thick veins in part. Most calcite-filled fractures contain quartz, iron oxides, and dolomite as minor minerals. The calcite crystals show an characteristic appearance with an uniformly oriented growth, coated with goethite on the edge and the etch-pit sites of their surface. Some calcite crystals have been newly formed by the precipitation of elements dissolved from the tunnel shotcrete wall, and their morphology changed according to the chemistry and flow of groundwater. The calcite can modify the groundwater chemistry and significantly affect the sorption behavior of radionuclides. The characteristic crystal structure and surface morphology of the calcite examined in the KURT site will be used as important basic data for the radionuclide migration experiment in the future.
This study analyzed precipitation environment, heavy metal concentration, mineral composition, and spectral characteristics associated with heavy metal concentration and mineral composition for the reddish brown precipitates occurred in the drainage of Dogye mining station. The pH of the reddish brown precipitates ranges from 7.59 to 7.94 resulting neutral. XRF analysis reveals that the precipitates has high Fe concentration, and contaminated with Ni, Cu, and Zn. Dolomite, calcite, goethite, magnetite, kaolinite, pyrophyllite, quartz and aluminum isopropoxide were identified based on XRD analysis. As a result of spectral analysis associated with heavy metal contamination, visible reflectance increases and infrared reflectance decreases with a increase in heavy metal concentration. The spectral characteristics of the reddish brown precipitates is turned out to be manifested by goethite, magnetite, kaolinite, pyrophyllite and aluminum isopropoxide.
In the high-Ca limestone zone of the Pungchon Formation of the Lower Chosun Supergroup, cryptocrystalline alterations with reddish brown color occur as fissure-fillings or coatings, which was originated from the upper formation, i. e., the Hwajeol Formation. The precipitates result in degradation and contamination of the high-Ca limestone ore in grade and quality, showing characteristic occurrence and mineral composition typical of suggesting a supergene origin. Chalcedonic quartz, kaolinite, illite, goethite and hematite are constituting a characteristic authigenic mineral assemblage and, in places, smectite is less commonly included in the weathering product. In addition to these authigenic phases, some detrital minerals such as mica and orthoclase constituting relatively coarser grains are also rarely present in the supergene alterations. A rather complex clay facies consisting of kaolinite, illite and smectite in the alterations seems to correspond to the typical clay composition of the reported residual pedogenic soils by limestone weathering. The cryptocrystalline weathering product is partly altered to stilbite, a characteristic hydrothermal zeolite, in places, by the hydrothermal contact of late stage. The time of formation and infiltration of the supergene alterations seems to correspond to the stage just after the epithermal alteration of the Pungchon Limestone, i. e., an early Jurassic age. The supergene alteration, which may imply the stage of uplifting, weathering and erosion of the Chosun Supergroup, appears to have undergone at an oxygen-rich environment in descending water of meteoric origin by means of a chemical leaching and diffusion.
The Sancheong kaolin was fractionated into 9 size fractions by wet sieving, sedimentation, and centrifugation. The systematic X-ray diffraction combined with electron microscopy shows that the clay mineral composition of each size fraction is related to the original fabric of kaolin. Minerals such as halloysite (10${\AA}$), kaolinite, illite, and goethite which were formed by procipitation from solution are generally concentrated in the finer fractions, whereas verniculite which was formed by pseudomorphic transformation from other primary minerals are concentrated in the coarser factions. Kaolinits of various types which were formed by precipitation or transformation show a wide size range but they are generally concentrated in the coarser fractions. Halloysite or halloysite-kaolinite clusters in coarse fractions are the fragmentation products of the walls of original boxwork clusters in coarse fractions are the fragmentation products of the walls of original boxwork kaolin which escaped the complete dispersion even through the grinding, ultrasonic agitation, and chemical treatment. Separation of fully hydrated halloysite and kaolinite was possible by systematic wet size fractionation. The coarse-grained minerals such as vermiculite and kaolinite are usually removed during the preparation of clay fraction smaller than 2${\mu}m$, whereas the fine-grained minerals such as illite and goethite are overlooked in X-ray diffraction of the bulk samples because of their minor contents. The systematic wet size fractionation is needed for understanding of the exact mineralogy of kaolin of weathering origin.
Reddish brown clay-silt sediments covered granitoid weathering crust in the Jangdongri area, Naju, Korea. Mineralogical and geochemical properties of the ~2 m sediment section were investigated. The sediments were composed mainly of quartz (50%) and clay minerals (45%) with minor contents of K-feldspar, goethite, hematite, and gibbsite. The clay minerals were illite, illite-smectite mixed-layers, vermiculite, hydroxy-Al vermiculite, kaolinite, and halloysite. Mineral composition varied little through the section with the minor upward enrichment of plagioclase and chlorite. Abundant illitic clay minerals indicated the remote source of the sediments because clays derived by granite weathering in Korea were dominated by kaolin minerals. A comparison with the mineral composition of Asian dust (Hwangsa) suggested that plagioclase and K-feldspar disappeared by chemical weathering after deposition, resulting in the quartz and clay-rich sediments. Plagioclase and chlorite altered to kaolin and vermiculite, respectively. Goethite and hematite derived by the weathering of iron-bearing minerals stained the sediment to reddish brown color. The mineralogical and geochemical properties of the reddish brown clay-silt sediments were consistent with those of eolian deposits identified in Korea, supporting eolian origin of the Jangdongri sediments, requiring future confirmation including age dating and isotopic analysis.
It is quite difficult to identify its corrosion compound because they have a wide variety of crystal structures and they are mixed with two component. This study was conducted with the standard iron corrosion compounds through the analysis by Raman Micro-Spectroscopy, which aims to obtain standard Raman Data. To assess the reliability of standard iron corrosion compounds, SEM-EDS analysis and XRD analysis were conducted. Through SEM-EDS analysis, the elements of corrosion compound matched with those of standards iron corrosion compounds except Goethite. XRD analysis showed that the structures of corrosion compounds were identical to those of standard iron corrosion compounds, however, it was identified that Iron sulfate ($FeSO_4{\cdot}6H_2O$) is the Rozenite ($FeSO_4{\cdot}4H_2O$). Through Raman Micro-Spectroscopy analysis, the new peak was detected from the wavenumbers of hydroxide and iron oxide. It is considered that it is due to changes in the wavelength of the laser. As the wavenumbers of iron chloride and iron sulfate have been identified, eight kinds of Raman Data were obtained. It can be considered to contribute to cultral heritage for iron objects that Raman Micro-Spectroscopy analysis which is relatively easy to compare material properties and structures can be highly applicable to the research on cultural heritage with the limited amount of samples.
For evaluation of adsorption characteristics of heavy metals, precipitates were collected from stream bottom in the Dalseong mine. The removal of some heavy metals such as As, Cu, and Cd from aqueous solution is studied using a precipitates taken from acid mine drainage. The yellowish brown (Munsell color 8.75YR 5/10) and dark brown (Munsell color 2.5YR 3/8) precipitates that collected from the study area consist mainly of schwertmannite and goethite, respectively. The percentage removal or adsorption capacity of metals depends on the initial concentration and characteristics of adsorbent. Removal efficiency of the adsorbents shows the order for metal ions of As > Cu > Cd. The adsorption efficiency by absorbent of precipitates in low concentration metal aqueous solution were observed 67.00-85.00% for As, 26.24-29.08% for Cd, and 7.67-12.82% for Cu. As the initial concentration of metal ions was increased from 1 to 10 mg/L, adsorption amount of adsorbent increased from 0.29 to 1.29 mg/g of Cu of schwertmannite, and from 0.24 to 1.97 mg/g of goethite.

Feasibility of laboratory-synthesized zerovalent iron was investigated to remove arsenic from leachates of tailings taken from an Au-Ag abandoned mine. The tailings were seriously contaminated with arsenic, and its potential adverse effect on the ecosystems around the mine seems to be significantly high. Long-term column experiments were conducted for about 3.5 months to evaluate the effectiveness of the synthesized zerovalent iron for removal of arsenic. Over than 95% removal efficiency of As was observed in the zerovalent iron mediated tests. In addition, the XRD data suggest that the corrosion products of ZVI were identified magnetite, maghemite, goethite, and lepidocrocite, all of which support Fe(II) oxidation as an intermediate step in the zerovalent iron corrosion process. The results indicate that arsenic can be removed from the tailing-leachate by the mechanism of coprecipitation and/or adsorption onto those iron oxides formed from ZVI corrosion.
A large number of metallic relics were excavated by a team of Kyungsang University museum (Nov. 25, 1985 - Jan. 29, 1986) from the groups of tombs located at No. 9 Mountain,Okchun Village, Sungsan-Ri, Ssangchak-Myon, Hyopchun-Kun, Kyungsangnam-Do which are believed to date back to Kaya period. The Janghang smelter is the first lead, zinc and copper smelting facility in Korea which was operated for a half century from 1936 to 1989. The clay minerals and their heavy metal association in the soil profile around the smelter have been studied using XRD, EPMA, SEM-EDS, TEM, EPR and sequential extraction techniques. The soils in A horizon are highly acidic showing pH 4.45. The pH is going up with increasing depth. They have residual water contents of 1.18-1.51 wt%, loss on ignition of 6.32-7.79 wt%, and carbon contents of 0.08-0.88 wt%. Soils consist of quartz, feldspar, muscovite, kaolinite, vermiculite, biotite, chlorite, goethite and hematite in the decreasing abundance. The contents of clay minerals, especially vermiculite and chlorite, decrease with increasing depth. Sequential extraction experiments for the profile samples show that heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd) are highly concentrated in the A horizon of the soil profile as water-extractable (mostly amorphous), MgCl2-extractable (exchangeable in clay minerals), and organic phases. The heavy metal contents decrease with increasing depth. It suggests that the heavy metals are mainly associate with clay minerlas in an exchangeable state. It is also noted that heavy metals are highly concentrated in the manganese and iron oxide phases.
