  • This paper deals with seasonal fluctuation of fish communities around the coast of Kunsan, Korea from 1992 to 1993. A total of 98 fish species with 82 genera, 47 families, and 14 orders were collected during the study. Among fishes caught by trawl net, Cynoglossus joyneri and Repomucenus ornatipinnis predominated throughout the year, and by long back net Harengula zunasi and Engraulis japonica except winter season. There is a difference between biomass caught by long back net and by trawl net, the former showing a peak in summer and the latter showing peaks in late spring and winter. This result appears to be due to the occurrences of Platycephalus indicus and Liparis tanakai for the spawning in investigated areas. Among the 14 species collected in the intertidal zone, 13 species of the family Gobiidae were mostly found in the spawning season. These results may suggest that the coastal area of Kunsan provides a good spawning ground for the coastal fishes. It is considered that the seasonal fluctuation of the abundance and species composition in fishes in this area is mainly affected by the water temperature and the bottom habitats.

  • The fish fauna of Munsom in Jeju-do, Korea, was investigated for a total of five times underwater from April 2009 to October 2010. Fish specimens were collected with a small net by SCUBA diving and fish specimens difficult to collect were photographed underwater using a underwater camera and a camcorder. The fish specimens collected from the sea around Munsom were identified as 91 species, belonging to 73 genera, 39 families, and 11 orders. Among them, the largest group was Order Perciformes, comprising 54 species and 21 families, consisting 59.3% in total number of species and the following 19 species of Order Scorpaeniformes was 20.8%. In this study Amblyeleotris sp. of family Gobiidae was discovered as new species by underwater photography in Korea. It was more the demersal fishes (55%) than the pelagic fishes (45%) and in social behavior pattern it was much more species swimming alone than schooling.

  • To investigate the skin of the flat-headed goby, Luciogobius guttatus, it was used 8 body regions such as the head, the upper and lower jaw, the chin, the back, lateral region, abdomen, and the operculum. The epidermis consisted of three layers: the outermost layer, middle layer and stratum germinativum (basal layer). The outermost layer consisted of rather flattened cells arranged in 1 to 4 layers and mucous cells. The middle layer consisted of large epidermal cells occupying the height of the epidermis with 1 to 10 layers, causing a web-shaped structure. Due to the large epidermal cells of the middle layer, L. guttaus had a thick epidermis. The large epidermal cell contains tonofilaments, lucent contents, and desmosome. The basal layer was comprised of a single layer having cuboidal cells. A large number of fine blood capillaries were found just under the basal layer. The dermis consisted mostly of stratum compactum with numerous blood capillaries but had no scale.

  • The goby genus Tridentiger of Korea is reviewed and keys to following four species of the genus Tridentiger are provided for T. trigenocephalus, T. obscurus, T. nudicervicus and T. brevispinis. Among them, T. brevispinis is reported for the first time from Korea with the descriptions and illustrations of other three species of this genus in this paper. The external features of T. brevispinis are very similar with those of T. obscurus, however T. brevispinis is distinguished from T. obscurus by having the shorter 3rd dorsal spine, lesser number of gill rakers and longer intestine length. T. obscurus lives in the river mouth and esturaies around the coast of Korea, while T. brevispinis is collected from only the fresh water area.

  • Age and growth of the mudskipper, Scartelaos gigas were investigated using the second actinost bone of the pectoral girdle, based on an analysis of 560 individuals collected from the mud flats in south west Korea. Specimens were collected semimonthly from March to September of 2003. Actinost and ring radii of each ring group showed a direct one-to-one relationship, with ring radius increasing in tandem with actinost radius. Monthly change in the marginal indices showed that ring formation occurred between May and July(mainly June), being supported by the monthly change in the gonadosomatic(highest in June) and hepatosomatic(lowest in July) indices. Because the species has not been found since November, when air temperature was less than about $10^{\circ}C$, it is thought to enter to hibernation. Therefore, it was suggested that the two new actinost rings may appear a year: one during the spawning season(May-July) and another during hibernation(since November). Although the growth of S. gigas must be limited to short periods each year from March to April and from August to October, its growth rate was considerably fast. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters of S. gigas were $TL_{\infty}$=179.36 mm, K=0.78 $year^{-1}$, $t_0$=-0.7762, and age-length key were $TL_1$=134.3 mm, $TL_2$=158.6 mm, $TL_3$=169.1 mm, $TL_4$=175.0 mm.

  • An olfactory organ in Scartelaos gigas, so-called mudskipper known as adaptation to an amphibious lifestyle, was investigated anatomically and histologically. S. gigas possessed the paired olfactory organ comprising respectively the one elongated canal and two nasal sacs, lacrimal and ethmoidal nasal sac. The sensory epithelium developed partly in the canal contained four distinct types of cells: (1) receptor cell with 3 to 4 cilia in number, (2) supporting, (3) basal, (4) mucus cell. The sensory epithelium was also of transitional layer as multi cellularity structure. The non-sensory epithelium had no sensory elements. The two nasal sacs possessed typically a lot of mucin droplets. These results might be considered that anatomical structure and histological characters of the olfactory organ showing in S. gigas is adapted to semi-aquatic life associated with its ecological habit and habitat.

  • The feeding habits of scorpion fish, Sebastiscus marmoratus, were studied using 324 specimens collected in the coastal waters of Tongyeong, from January to December, 2009. The size of the specimens ranged from 9.8 to 30.1 cm in standard length (SL). S. marmoratusis was a piscivore that consumed mainly teleosts such as Engraulis japonicus, Clupea pallasi and gobid fishes. Of the fish species Engraulis japonicus was the most preferred prey. Its diet also includes shrimps and crabs. Hermit crabs, polychaetes, bivalves and euphausia were minor preys. Smaller individuals (<13 cm SL) fed mainly on shrimps, crabs and fishes. The proportion of shrimps and crabs decreased as body size increased, whereas the consumption of fishes gradually increased. Fishes accounted for almost stomach contents of larger individuals (more than 19 cm SL). Seasonal changes in the S. marmoratusis diet were significant. Fishes was most common prey during summer, autumn and winter, whereas crabs and shrimps were mainly consumed during spring.
