  • This study was carried out to investigate the origin, insertion, direction of muscle fibers and structure of the ear muscles of the Korean native goat. The description was based on the dissection of fifteen the Korean native goats with embalming fluid. The results were as follows: 1. The ear muscles of the Korean native goat were composed of the M. zygomaticoauricularis, M. scutuloauricularis superficialis, M. scutuloauricularis profundus, M. frontoscutularis, M. interscutularis, M. parietoauricularis, M. cervicoscutularis, M. cervicoauricularis superficialis, M. cervicoauricularis medius, M. cervicoauricularis profundus, M. auricularis profundus posterior and M. parotidoauricularis. 2. The M. frontoscutularis clearly seperated into temporal and frontal parts in 6 cases. 3. The M. scutuloauricularis profundus clearly separated into major and minor parts. 4. The M. zygomaticoauricularis blended with the M. parotidoauricularis near its insertion, but not with the M. scutuloauricularis.

  • Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagions disease of cloven-hoofed animals and occurs in many non-European countries, in particular in huge parts of Asia including Turkey, in most countries of Africa and in parts of South America. The extreme contagiousness of the disease requires comprehensive to control an outbreak, causing high economic losses. The outbreak of FMD, which affects livestock including cattle, swine, sheep, goats, deer and other animals as a highly communicable disease that affects. The agency issued a statement noting that FMD disease does not spread to humans. The disease and meat from infected animals are news reports that more than 3.400.000 livestock have been ordered slaughtered so far across the country.

  • Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is considered to be one of the main constraints to enhancing the productivity of goats and sheep in regions where it is present and becoming endemic. PPR was recognized in Pakistan in early 1990s but got importance during the Participatory Disease Surveillance (PDS) of Rinderpest Eradication Campaign. Lot of research work has been initiated during last decade towards disease epidemiology, risk factor recognition, laboratory diagnosis, vaccination and demonstration of control strategies. Although there are ongoing projects working towards the progressive control of the disease in country yet there is need to have a national level control program for PPR. Also there is need to have comprehensive social economic surveys, disease hot spot recognition and identification of role of other species in disease transmission. With combined efforts of local and national authorities and political will, there is high likelihood that this devastating disease can be controlled and eventually eradicated in near future.

  • This study was conducted to compare the intake, digestibility and utilization of nitrogen by goats consuming high and low tannin diets. Low tannin diets were 100% grass(GS) and 50% grass + SO% alfalfa (GA), and high tannin diets were 50% grass + 50% lespedeza(GL) and 50% grass + 50% oak browse(G0). Dry matter intake did not differ among all diets, but digestibility of dry matter, cellular constituents, NDF and ADF showed slightly lower for high tannin diets(GO) than low tannin diets(GS and GA), but those were not differ between GL and low tannin diets with the exception of ADF digestibility. Total faces and urinary N were lower for high tannin diets than for low tannin diets. Apparently digested N was high in GA diets, but low in GO diets(P

  • In this Experiment three wether male Matou goats (♂), all fitted with permanent rumen fistulae, were used to study the rumen degradabilities (incubation time 48h) of dry matter (DM), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF), acid detergent ligin (ADL), cellulose (CEL) and hemicellulose (HC) and their contents of wheat and rice straws were determined for the different morphological fractions and segments. The results showed that the variation of different fractions for wheat and rice straw is the true resources of their nutritive value variation and the cell wall contents of wheat and rice straw are also obviously different. The rumen degradabilities of different straw fibre are significantly different (p<0.01), mean while the effect of straw variety is also significant (p<0.05). The aim was to set up a foundation for studying the rumen degradation of the roughage resources.

  • The bulk of the world's goat population is found in South-East Asia and Africa, where goats are the major source of meat production. Unfortunately, lack of an organized goat meat industry and marketing structure in developing countries is primarily responsible for their poor export earnings compared to those in developed countries such as Australia and New Zealand. Goat meat is leaner than meat from other domestic red meat species as well as being comparable in terms of its nutritional constituents. Furthermore, there are few, if any, religious or cultural taboos limiting the consumption of goat meat. Development of a carcass grading system and a suitable infrastructure in developing countries are some of the key requirements needed to establish a sustainable goat meat industry in the world. With an increase in demand by consumers for low-fat red meat alternatives, the future of the goat meat industry looks promising.

  • Neospora caninum is a coccidian parasite of animals. It is a major pathogen for cattle and dogs and it occasionally causes clinical infections in horses, goats, sheep, and deer. Domestic dogs are the only known definitive hosts for N. caninum. It is one of the most efficiently transmitted parasite of cattle and up to 90% of cattle in some herds are infected. Transplacental transmission is considered the major route of transmission of N. caninum in cattle. Neospora caninum is a major cause of abortion in cattle in many countries. To elicit protective immunity against abortion in cows that already harbor a latent infection is a major problem. This paper reviews information on biology, diagnosis, epidemiology and control of neosporosis in animals.

  • The studies on the prevalence of ixodid ticks during July 1991 to June 1992 in five thanas of Chittagong hilly area in Bangladesh revealed that 65.45% cattle and 44.4% goats were infested with Boophilus microplus, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and Haemaphysallis bispinosa. Aside these, only 4.62% cattle were found infested with Amblyomma sp. The tick infestation was highest in summer and declined gradually through rainy season to lowest in winter.

  • The extent to which farmers use the recommended husbandry practices by farmers raising goats in southern Thailand was investigated. Base-line data was collected by interviewing 297 farmers and the constraints to the use of recommended husbandry practices were examined for these farmers in the Chana district, Songkhla province of southern Thailand. The number of farmers using the various recommended husbandry practices was low. An extension program is needed to encourage the use of recommended goat husbandry practices in target areas of southern Thailand to provide a better understanding of the most effective goat husbandry practices.
