  • Characteristics of a gas chromatographic detector using glow discharge as the ionization source was studied in helium flow. Discharge current greater than 10$_6$ A was observed from the electric field 400 V/mm for the electrode distance 1 mm. The discharge current of 0.1~0.3 mA could be used for the detection of organic compounds. Discharge current was almost constant for the helium flow rate greater than 10 ml/min, but the discharge was easily disappeared by an injection of a small amount of organic compound in the flow rate of 0~30 ml/min. From the decrement of the discharge current depend on several compounds, it was suggested that the sensitivity of the glow discharge ionization chromatographic detector is strongly influenced by the molecular weight of the compounds.

  • Plasma oscillation has been observed during the development of the glow discharge as detector for gas chromatography. The variation of oscillation frequency shows the better stability and detection limits than the changes in the dischange curent. To investigate the range of useful operating conditions and to gain insight into the mechanism, the effect of experimental parameters on plasma oscillation have been studied. This study includes the variation of discharge current, pressure and discharge gap. Frequency ranges of 10KHz to 10MHz have been observed with the various shapes of oscillation. Two kinds of mode for oscillation are observed with the variation of electrode gap at low pressure and low voltage.

  • A Griemm type Glow Discharge cell is attached to a commercial quadrapole based ICP-MS and used for the analysis of surface analysis. By employing 2.0mm diameter, mode and proper experimental conditions, several layers of few ${\mu}m$ thickness are analysed within 30 minutes. Multi-layers of Cu-Ni, Fe-Ni are analyzed with the resolution of 10nm by GDMS. Proper experimental conditions make a flat bottom crater shape and good resolution for multi-layer depth profile study.

  • Time-resolved current and voltage measurements for an inductive automotive spark system were made. Also presented are measurements of the total energy delivered to the spark gap. The measurements were made in air for a range of pressures from 1-18atm, at ambient temperatures. The measured voltage and current characteristics were found to be a function of many ignition parameters; some of these include: spark gap distance, internal resistance of the spark plug and high tension wire, and pressure. The voltages presented were measured either at the top of the spark plug or at the spark gap. The measurements were made at different time resolutions to more accurately resolve the voltage and current behavior throughout the discharge process. This was necessary because the breakdown event occurs on a time scale much shorter than the arc and glow phases. The breakdown, are, and glow voltages were found to be functions of spark plug resistance, gas density, and spark plug gap as expected from the literature. Spark duration was found to decrease as either pressure or gap was increased. The transition from the arc to glow phase is usually distinguished by a sudden rise in the voltage across the gap. At pressures above about 7atm this transition was not observed suggesting that a glow phase was not present. Energy delivered to the gap increased with increasing pressure. The effective resistance of the spark gap during discharge was about twice as large for the glow phase as the arc phase.

  • The effects of wall charge and bias voltage on exo-electron emission currents were examined. In addition, the effects of doping elements on the currents were investigated. These results indicated that the statistical delay is inversely proportional to the exo-electron emission currents measured.

  • Perfluorocompounds ($PFC_s$), such as tetrafluoromethane ($CF_4$) and hexafluoroethane ($C_2F_6$), have been widely used as plasma etching and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) gases for semiconductor manufacturing processes. Since these $PFC_s$ are known to cause a greenhouse effect intensively, there has been a growing interest in reducing $PFC_s$ emissions. Among various $CF_4$ decomposing techniques, a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) is considered as one of a promising candidate because it has been successfully used for generating ozone ($O_3$) and decomposing nitrogen oxide (NO). Firstly, optimal concentration of oxygen for $CF_4$ decomposition was found to figure out how many primary and secondary reactions are associated with DBD process. Secondary, to find effective discharge method for $CF_4$ decomposition, a streamer and a glow mode in DBD are experimentally compared, which includes (i) coaxialcylinder DBD, (ii) DBD reactor packed with glass beads. and (iii) a glow mode operation with a helium gas. The test results showed that optimal concentration of oxygen was ranged 500 ppm~1% for treating 500 ppm of $CF_4$ and helium glow discharge was the most efficient one to decompose $CF_4$.

  • We have investigated the micro-discharge in plasma display panel using 2 dimensional 2 fluid MHD equations. Plasma display utilizes the physical phenomena of the normal glow or abnormal glow and is considered to be able to provide the largest display area among various flat panel. 2 fluid, 2 dimensional Magneto-Hydro-Dynamic equations are applied to Computational field of 100${\times}$800${\mu}m^2$. Time varing glows and after-glows were investigated for 11 $\mu$sec. We obtained the distribution of the microscopic variables such as the density, temperature, velocity of Ne+Ar0.1% gas plasma. During the first 6$\mu$ sec, glow discharge dued to DC pulse was investigated. Time varing phenomena of after-glow was also investigated during the last 5 $\mu$set. From results, it was found that the driving efficiency of a DC Plasma Display Panel could be improved when the diffusion of ions and electrons are controlled by the pulses applied to the auxiliary anode.

  • A novel polyacrylamide grafted hydrous ferric oxide adsorbent composite has been synthesized by using glow discharge electrolysis plasma. To optimize the synthesis conditions, the following parameters were examined in detail: applied power, discharge time, post polymerization temperature, post polymerization time, amount of crosslinking agent and hydrous ferric oxide gel added and so on. The adsorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The removal percentage of the adsorbent in Pb(II) solution was examined and the data obtained showed that the adsorbent composite has a high capacity for lead ion. For the use in wastewater treatment, the thermodynamic and kinetic of Pb(II)-capture were also studied. Results indicated that the adsorption reaction was a spontaneous and an endothermic process, and it seems to be obeyed a pseudo-secondorder rate model. Moreover, the adsorption isotherm of Pb(II)-capture is following the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models.

  • It is important to understand tile behaviours of tile high pressure DC glow discharge with a micro gap inside a pixel of the plasmas display panel. We prepared a narrow gap discharge system and have measured electron temperature and density by means of double probe methods in high pressure which was between 100torr and 200torr. And the electrode gap was 7mm. When the pressure varied from 100torr to 200torr, the negative glow was created at a distance less than 1mm from the cathode. And the length of the faraday dark space decreased from 8mm to 5mm. Hence probe measurements was mainly, performed in the region of the Faraday dark space. The dependence of electron temperature and density on the pressure and current density was same with that of the general flow discharge, i.e. as the pressure increased the electron temperature decreased and the density increased. But the spatial electron density distribution in the Faraday dark space was highly distorted because of the effect of high pressure.
