  • Some Korean terminologies on reproductive structures of seed plants in plant morphology, written incorrectly in many books, were analysed to propose accurately expressed terminologies. 31 books in areas such as general biology, plant biology, plant morphology, and biological dictionaries and glossaries were selected to analyse the accuracy of the terminologies for reproductive structures in gymnosperms, e.g., cone or strobilus, seed (or ovulate) cone and pollen cone, and conifer(s) or coniferous plants, and for flower structures in angiosperms, e.g., corolla, anther, filament, pistillate (or female) flower and staminate (or male) flower, apocarpous, and syncarpous. The definition and etymology of the terminologies were traced in 4 textbooks of plant anatomy and 2 dictionaries of biology and botany written in English. On the basis of the definition, etymology, and principles for terminology formation according to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 704:2000), reasonably expressed Korean terminologies were proposed. All of the 8 terminologies examined in this study were included in the glossary of biological terminologies, published by the Korean Association of Biological Sciences in 2005, and designated as an editorial source for science and biology textbooks for middle and high schools by Ministry of Education in 2007. However, the only 1 of the 8 terminologies described in the glossary were consistent with the proposed expression in the present study. These inconsistencies indicated the need for a reassessment of this glossary of biological terminologies. The newly proposed terminologies would facilitate mutual understanding between teachers and students of plant biology.

  • Korean terminologies on stem structures in plant morphology, written incorrectly in many books, were analysed to propose accurately expressed terminologies. 35 books in areas such as general biology, plant biology, plant morphology, and biological dictionaries and glossaries were selected to analyse the accuracy of the terminologies for seed structures, e.g., shoot and shoot system, rhizome, apical dominance, anticlinal and periclinal divisions, and intercalary and lateral meristems. However, the only 1 of the 8 terminologies described in the glossary were consistent with the proposed expression in the present study. These inconsistencies indicated the need for a reassessment of this glossary of biological terminologies. The validity of the proposed Korean terminologies was tested in a questionnaire sent to 17 professors teaching plant morphology or/and taxonomy at universities. A mean of 91.9% of the total respondents agreed with the Korean expressions proposed in this study. The new, proposed terminologies would facilitate mutual understanding between teachers and students of plant biology.

  • This study describes the Bottom-up method for implementation of an ontology system from the RDB. The STNet, a structured terminology glossary based on RDB, was served as a test bed for converting to RDF ontology, for generating the inference rules, and for evaluating the results of the semantic search. We have used protege editor of the ontology developing tool to design ontologies with test data. We also tested the designed ontology with the Inference Engine (Pellet) of protege editor. The generated reference rules were tested by TBox and SPARQL queries through STNet ontology. The results of test show that the generated reference rules were verified as true and STNet ontology were also evaluated to be useful for searching the complex combination of semantic relation.

  • Power system technologies in the area of smart grid are being converged with communication system technologies or information technologies(IT). This interdisciplinary action affects on two parts vigorously so that IT has become a essential part of power industry. But terminologies of two parts are confused and it is necessary that these are standardized to develop the industry. The writing system of the Open Korean Knowledge Dictionary for standardization of smart grid terminologies which are IEC TC 57 glossary and non-glossary is proposed. The writing system includes the process of collection, writing guideline and standardization of terminologies. Writing results of 90,000 terminologies for electricity, communication and computer fields including smart grid terminologies, which are registered in the Open Korean Knowledge Dictionary, are shown. The system provides the capability of collection and delivery of academic society opinions for the selected and interpreted terminologies through the internet for standardization and industry propagation of smart grid terminologies.

  • Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), a medical thesaurus created by the National Library of Medicine (NLM), is a useful resource for natural language processing (NLP). In this article, the current status of the Japanese version of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) is reviewed. Online investigation found that Japanese-English dictionaries, which assign MeSH information to applicable terms, but use them for NLP, were found to be difficult to access, due to license restrictions. Here, we investigate an open-source Japanese-English glossary as an alternative method for assigning MeSH IDs to Japanese terms, to obtain preliminary data for NLP proof-of-concept.

(Beijing International Symposium on Land Reclamation ISLR 2000 - Mine Land Reclamation and Ecological Restoration for 21st Century)에 참석하여 국제적인 상황을 파악할 수 있도록 한 바 있다.

  • This article set out to develop an old Chinese - modern Korean collated terminology by analyzing and paralleling Chinese-Korean translational terms relevant to Korean medicine at a minimum meaning unit from "Eonhaegugeupbang", "Eonhaetaesanjipyo" and "Eonhaetaesanjipyo". Those are composed of original Chinese texts and their subsequent corresponding Korean translations. It tries to make a list of translational standards of Korean medicine terms by classifying the cases of translational ambiguity in terms of disease, body position, thumbnail-pressing acupuncture method, and disease-curing method. The above-mentioned ancient books are medical classics written by Huh Jun, the representative medical physician, and published by the Joseon government. Thus, they are appropriate enough as historically legitimate medical documents, from which are drawn out words and terms to form an old Chinese - modern Korean collation dictionary. This collation glossary will contribute to the increased relevance of data ming, or information retrieval. in a database system and information search engine of massive Korean medical records, by means of providing a novel way to obtaining synchronized results between the original writings of old Chinese and the secondary translated ones of modern Korean. The glossary will promote the collective but consistent translation of numerous old archives of Korean medicine and in other related fields as well.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the terms used in the Information Boards of Geosites at Jeonbuk West Coast National Geopark. Among the terms used in the Information Boards, nouns were extracted and listed based on the Standard Korean Language Dictionary, a glossary of earth and the data for the development of textbooks according to the 2015 revision of curriculum, by which eight types were classified. Seventy-one nouns (10.8%) of the extracted terms were not listed in any glossary. Most of these terms were compound words derived by combining [noun]+[noun] or [noun]+[affix] so that they were not easy to comprehend. In addition, two hundred fifty-six nouns (46%) of the terms were identified as jargons used in specific disciplines. Therefore, it is strongly suggested that when creating the National Geopark Information Boards, the academic jargon embedded terminologies be explained with annotation for general public visitors and students to understand without difficulty.

  • A user can use resources on the Semantic Web using a Semantic Web browser. In order to utilize the functions of Semantic Web browsers in education, we compared the functions of well-known Semantic Web browsers such as Tabulator, Contextual Search Browser (CSB), Magpie, and Piggy Bank. In order to utilize Semantic Web browsers in education, a user needs to understand the features of each Semantic Web browser and our work can help both teachers and students. Tabulator is an RDF browser that can help to check whether resources can be used for learning and relevance of resources. CSB can be used to search educational resources using a conrtext file that contains the subjects of learning. It can also help learning by showing semantic web resources in the form of triple set as well as by supporting highlighting function. Magpie can help learners without basic knowledge on learning materials by providing interpretation based on a glossary file and related background knowledge. Piggy Bank supports conversion of web resources into semantic web resources and allows to browse semantic web resources in various views as well as to share semantic web resources.
