We propose a number-theory-based quantized mathematical optimization scheme for various NP-hard and similar problems. Conventional global optimization schemes, such as simulated and quantum annealing, assume stochastic properties that require multiple attempts. Although our quantization-based optimization proposal also depends on stochastic features (i.e., the white-noise hypothesis), it provides a more reliable optimization performance. Our numerical analysis equates quantization-based optimization to quantum annealing, and its quantization property effectively provides global optimization by decreasing the measure of the level sets associated with the objective function. Consequently, the proposed combinatorial optimization method allows the removal of the acceptance probability used in conventional heuristic algorithms to provide a more effective optimization. Numerical experiments show that the proposed algorithm determines the global optimum in less operational time than conventional schemes.
Global sensitivity analysis (GSA) has been widely used to investigate the sensitivity of the model output with respect to its input parameters. In this paper a new single-solution search optimization algorithm is developed based on the GSA, and applied to the size optimization of truss structures. In this method the search space of the optimization is determined using the sensitivity indicator of variables. Unlike the common meta-heuristic algorithms, where all the variables are simultaneously changed in the optimization process, in this approach the sensitive variables of solution are iteratively changed more rapidly than the less sensitive ones in the search space. Comparisons of the present results with those of some previous population-based meta-heuristic algorithms demonstrate its capability, especially for decreasing the number of fitness functions evaluations, in solving the presented benchmark problems.
A new hybrid meta-heuristic optimization algorithm is presented for design of structures. The algorithm is based on the concepts of the charged system search (CSS) and the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms. The CSS is inspired by the Coulomb and Gauss's laws of electrostatics in physics, the governing laws of motion from the Newtonian mechanics, and the PSO is based on the swarm intelligence and utilizes the information of the best fitness historically achieved by the particles (local best) and by the best among all the particles (global best). In the new hybrid algorithm, each agent is affected by local and global best positions stored in the charged memory considering the governing laws of electrical physics. Three different types of structures are optimized as the numerical examples with the new algorithm. Comparison of the results of the hybrid algorithm with those of other meta-heuristic algorithms proves the robustness of the new algorithm.

In structural design, the design variables are frequently selected from certain discrete values. Various optimization algorithms have been developed fDr discrete design. It is well known that many function evaluations are needed in such optimization. Recently, sequential algorithm with orthogonal arrays (SOA), which is a search algorithm for a local minimum in a discrete space, has been developed. It considerably reduces the number of function evaluations. However, it only finds a local minimum and the final solution depends on the initial values of the design variables. A new algorithm is proposed to adopt a genetic algorithm (GA) in SOA. The GA can find a solution in a global sense. The solution from the GA is used as the initial design of SOA. A sequential usage of the GA and SOA is carried out in an iterative manner until the convergence criteria are satisfied. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated by various examples.

The purpose of this paper is to review global stochastic optimization algorithms(GSOA) in case binary response experimentation is used and to compare the performances of them. GSOAs utilise estimator of probability of success $\^p$ instead of population probability of success p, since p is unknown and only known by its estimator which has stochastic characteristics. Hill climbing algorithm algorithm, simple random search, random search with random restart, random optimization, simulated annealing and particle swarm algorithm as a population based algorithm are considered as global stochastic optimization algorithms. For the purpose of comparing the algorithms, two types of test functions(one is simple uni-modal the other is complex multi-modal) are proposed and Monte Carlo simulation study is done to measure the performances of the algorithms. All algorithms show similar performances for simple test function. Less greedy algorithms such as Random optimization with Random Restart and Simulated Annealing, Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO) based on population show much better performances for complex multi-modal function.
Genetic alogorithm(GA) is a well-known global optimization algorithm. However, as the searching bounds grow wider., performance of local optimization deteriorates. In this paper, we propose a hybrid algorithm which integrates the gradient algorithm and GA so as to reinforce the performance of local optimization. We apply this algorithm to the system identification of second order RLC circuit. Identification results show that the proposed algorithm gets the better and robust performance to find the exact values of RLC elements.
Current trend of design technologies shows engineers to objectify or automate the given decision-making process. The numerical optimization is an example of such technologies. However, in numerical optimization, the uncertainties are uncontrollable to efficiently objectify or automate the process. To better manage these uncertainties, Taguchi method, reliability-based optimization and robust optimization are being used. To obtain the target performance with the maximum robustness is the main functional requirement of a mechanical system. In this research, the robust design strategy is developed based on the DACE and the global optimization approaches. The DACE modeling, known as the one of Kriging interpolation, is introduced to obtain the surrogate approximation model of the system. The robustness is determined by the DACE model to reduce the real function calculations. The simulated annealing algorithm of global optimization methods is adopted to determine the global robust design of a surrogated model. The mathematical problems and the MEMS design problem are investigated to show the validity of the proposed method.

The general capacitor placement problem is a combinatorial optimization problem having an objective function composed of power losses and capacitor installation costs subject to bus voltage constraints. In this paper, a global optimization technique, which employing the chaos search algorithm, is applied to solve optimal capacitor placement problem with reducing computational effort and enhancing global optimality of the solution. Chaos method in optimization problem searches the global optimal solution on the regularity of chaotic motions and easily escapes from local or near optimal solution than stochastic optimization algorithms. The chaos optimization method is tested on 9 buses and 69 buses system to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

With the aid of genetic algorithm (GA), global optimization with multiple geometry parameters is feasible in the design of switched flux permanent magnet (SFPM) machines. To investigate the advantages of global optimization over individual optimization, which has been used extensively for the design of SFPM machines, a comparison between the two approaches is carried out for the case of fixed copper loss and volume. In the case of individual parameter optimization, the sequence in which the individual parameters are optimized is very important. In the global optimization a better design can always be achieved although the corresponding torque density is found to be only slightly better than that of individually optimized with correct design sequence. By using the obtained global optimization results, the performance in machines having two types of stator and rotor pole combinations, i.e. 12/10 and 12/14, are compared, and it is shown that higher torque is exhibited in the 12/14 SFPM machine. Finally, this paper also demonstrates that global optimization, with the restriction of equal pole width, magnet thickness and slot opening, can maximize the torque density without significantly sacrificing other performance, such as cogging torque and overload capability.

The design of a scramjet inlet is a process to search global optimization results among those factors influencing the geometry of scramjet in their ranges for some requirements. An optimization algorithm of hybrid genetic algorithm based on genetic algorithm and simplex algorithm was established for this purpose. With the sample provided by a uniform method, the compressive angles which also are wedge angles of the inlet were chosen as the inlet design variables, and the drag coefficient, total pressure recovery coefficient, pressure rising ratio and the combination of these three variables are designed specifically as different optimization objects. The contrasts of these four optimization results show that the hybrid genetic algorithm developed in this paper can capably implement the optimization process effectively for the inlet design and demonstrate some good adaptability.
