Plasticity of rice to water extremes: Farmers' genes to mechanisms

  • Too little and too much water due to climatic events is a significant cause of global food insecurity. Crops are less productive under water-limited conditions and all major crops, with the exception of rice (Oryza sativa), die within a few days of complete submergence. To complement our studies on genes such as SUB1A, (an ERF-VII transcription factor that provides robust submergence tolerance) and AG1 (a TREHALOSE 6-P PHOSPHATASE that promotes establishment of young seedlings underwater), we have retooled INTACT (${\underline{I}}solation$ of ${\underline{N}}uclei$ ${\underline{TA}}gged$ in specific ${\underline{C}}ell$ ${\underline{T}}ypes$) and TRAP (${\underline{T}}ranslating$ ${\underline{R}}ibosome$ ${\underline{A}}ffinity$ ${\underline{P}}urification$) for rice. These technologies enable us to follow dynamics in chromatin, nuclear pre-mRNAs and ribosome-bound mRNAs in meristems and diverse cell types. With these technologies we can better interpret responses to stresses and reestablishment of homeostasis. These include stress acclimation strategies involving changes in metabolism and development, such as dynamics in suberin deposition in sub-epidermal layers of roots that limit water loss under drought and oxygen escape during waterlogging. Our new data uncover dynamic and reversible regulation at multiple levels of gene regulation and provide new insights into processes of stress resilience. CLIMEX-based Analysis of Potential Geographical Distribution of Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti in South Korea

  • Purpose: Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus are notorious disease vectors that spread various viruses including dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya, and Zika. Recent Zika virus outbreaks were carried by Ae. aegypti, raising awareness about the perils of its global distribution. Because Ae. albopictus is spread throughout South Korea and can carry the same viruses as Ae. aegypti, monitoring potential distributions of Ae. albopictus and Ae. aegypti is necessary. Methods: In this study, the potential distributions of Ae. albopictus and Ae. aegypti in South Korea were modeled using CLIMEX software, and changes in response to climate change were predicted. Results: The results indicated that the climatic suitability for Ae. albopictus was consistently high, while occurrence of Ae. aegypti was only predicted for Jeju Island in 2080. Conclusions: The results provide basic information for preventing the invasion of Ae. aegypti, and consequent interactions between Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus, which may cause severe outbreaks of dangerous diseases.

An experimental study on effect of Colloidal Nano-Silica on tetranary blended concrete

  • The possibility of using a combination of mineral admixtures as a replacement for cement may reduce the $CO_2$ emission which causes global warming and climatic changes on the environment. By using the combination of different byproducts from various industries, for replacing cement in concrete leads to saving in energy and natural resources. In this article, an attempt has been made to study the mechanical and water absorption properties of concrete incorporated with combination of Fly ash (FA), Alccofine (ALC) and Collodial Nano Silica (CNS) at 7, 28 and 56 days curing period. Cement has been partially replaced by combination of FA at 25%, ALC at 10% and CNS at 0.5%, 1%, 2% and 3% with water cement ratio of 0.43. The result indicates that the incorporation of combination of FA, ALC and CNS can be very effective in improvement of mechanical and water absorption properties of concrete. The Mix with a combination of 25% FA, 10% ALC and 1% CNS is most effective in improvement of mechanical and water absorption properties as compared with all other mixes.

Analysis of habitat characteristics of mosquitoes in Danwongu, Ansan city, Korea, based on civil complaint data

  • Climate change due to global warming and changes in land use increase the development time and distribution, as well as the abundance, of mosquitoes, thereby negatively affecting human life and health. In this study, we investigated the habitat characteristics of mosquito occurrence sites in Danwon-gu, Ansan city, Korea, based on a daily record of civil pest complaints lodged at the Danwon-gu Community Health Center. We considered two types of factors (natural and artificial) known to affect mosquito occurrence. We confirmed a total of 554 cases of mosquito occurrence from March 2014 to August 2017. The total study area was $49.11km^2$, with urban areas constituting the largest proportion. Additionally, we investigated habitat preferences of mosquitoes in terms of terrain factors; generally, mosquitoes occurred at low elevations and on low slopes. Regarding the preference of oviposition sites, mosquitoes occurred at higher rates near streams and crops lands. The rate of mosquito occurrence tended to increase in areas with dense human populations. Regarding climatic factors, the rate of mosquito occurrence increased in areas with high temperature and low precipitation.

A Study on the Change of Non-Working Days of Incheon Metropolitan through BCP Analysis (BCP분석을 통한 인천지역 작업불능일 변화 연구)

  • In the case of those types of work that are performed outdoor construction work, many non-working days occur due to climatic elements such as low temperature, rainfall, and high wind velocity. In particular, damage incurred construction delays hardly decreases because weather forecasting has become difficult due to global warming. In the present study, time points of drastic changes in annual average temperatures, annual average maximum temperatures, and annual average minimum temperatures were identified through BCP analysis and increasing/decreasing trends of non-working days in summer and winter were compared and analyzed on the basis of the change points. According to the results of the study, annual average temperatures drastically changed in 1988 and 1998. After the two time points, non-working days in summer and winter clearly showed increasing trends and decreasing trends respectively.

  • Global warming and climatic changes due to human activities impact on marine and terrestrial ecosystems, which feedbacks to climate system. These negative feedbacks amplify or accelerate again global climate change. In particular, it is important to analyze vegetation change. This study attempts to analyze quantitatively vegetation change in Korea peninsula by using harmonic analysis. Harmonic-Analysis based on Fourier Transform is the method to effectively demonstrate for time series data. Especially, Harmonic-Analysis is very suitable method to analyze vegetation change because the vegetation repeats the cycle growth and extinction every year. The result of harmonic-analysis shows vegetation change as time passes. In this study, SPOTNEGETATION S10 MVC NDVI data was used during last 10 years (1999-2008) in Korea Peninsula. Also, land type classification used MODIS Land Cover Map data. The study estimated that phase values moved up approximately 0.5 day per year in cropland and 0.8 day per year in forest.

Begomoviruses and Their Emerging Threats in South Korea: A Review

  • Diseases caused by begomoviruses (family Geminiviridae, genus Begomovirus) constitute a serious constraint to tropical and sub-tropical agro-ecosystems worldwide. In recent years, they have also introduced in temperate regions of the world where they have great impact and are posing a serious threat to a variety of greenhouse crops. Begomoviral diseases can in extreme cases reduce yields to zero leading to catastrophic losses in agriculture. They are still evolving and pose a serious threat to sustainable agriculture across the world, particularly in tropics and sub-tropics. Till recently, there have been no records on the occurrence of begomoviral disease in South Korea, however, the etiology of other plant viral diseases are known since last century. The first begomovirus infected sample was collected from sweet potato plant in 2003 and since then there has been gradual increase in the begomoviral epidemics specially in tomato and sweet potato crops. So far, 48 begomovirus sequences originating from various plant species have been submitted in public sequence data base from different parts of the country. The rapid emergence of begomoviral epidemics might be with some of the factors like evolution of new variants of the viruses, appearance of efficient vectors, changing cropping systems, introduction of susceptible plant varieties, increase in global trade in agricultural products, intercontinental transportation networks, and changes in global climatic conditions. Another concern might be the emergence of a begomovirus complex and satellite DNA molecules. Thorough understanding of the pathosystems is needed for the designing of effective managements. Efforts should also be made towards the integration of the resistant genes for the development of transgenic plants specially tomato and sweet potato as they have been found to be widely infected in South Korea. There should be efficient surveillance for emergence or incursions of other begomoviruses and biotypes of whitefly. This review discusses the general characteristics of begomoviruses, transmission by their vector B. tabaci with an especial emphasis on the occurrence and distribution of begomoviruses in South Korea, and control measures that must be addressed in order to develop more sustainable management strategies.

Inorganic Nutrient Distributions in Association with Thermocline at KOMO Station in the Northeast Equatorial Pacific Ocean during 1995-2002 (북동태평양 KOMO 정점에서 수온약층에 따른 무기영양염 분포 특성(1995-2002))

  • Annual variations of inorganic nutrients such as nitrate(+nitrite), phosphate and silicate in association with thermocline were investigated in the upper 200 m of the water column at KODES Long-term Monitoring (KOMO) station in the northeast equatorial Pacific from 1995 to 2002. Global climatic disturbances such as El Nino and La Nina, should have affected KODES area during the study period. In 1995-97 and 2000-2002, a thermocline where temperatures rapidly decrease with depth, was formed at 50-70 m water depth. Nutrient depletion, specially for nitrate and phosphate, was extended down to approximately 50 m depth, which coincided with the surface mixed layer depth. In 1998 and 1999, however a very fluctuating thermocline was observed at 20-100 m water depth. In the photic zone (up to 100 m depth), depth integration of nitrate, phosphate and silicate ranged from 2.02 to $23.14\;gN/m^2$, from 0.87 to $4.05\;gP/m^2$ and from 35.67 to $176.21\;gSi/m^2$, respectively. As a result of changes in the water column structures, nutrient concentrations also showed fluctuation parallel to the changes of thermocline in the study area.

Characteristic Change Analysis of Rainfall Events using Daily Rainfall Data (일강우자료를 이용한 강우사상의 변동 특성 분석)

  • Climate change of global warming may affect the water circulation in Korea. Rainfall is occurred with complex of multiple climatic indices. Therefore, the rainfall is one of the most significant index due to climate change in the process of water circulation. In this research, multiple time series data of rainfall events were extracted to represent the rainfall characteristics. In addition, the occurrence of rainfall time series analyzed by annual, seasonal and monthly data. Analysis method used change analysis of mean and standard deviation and trend analysis. Also, changes in rainfall characteristics and the relative error was calculated during the last 10 years for comparison with past data. At the results, significant statistical results weren't showed by randomness of rainfall data. However, amount of rainfall generally increased last 10 years, and number of raining days had trend of decrease. In addition, seasonal and monthly changes in the rainfall characteristics can be found to appear differently.

Dinophyceae Fluctuations in Two Alpine Lakes of Contrasting Size During a 10-Year Fortnightly Survey

  • Colbricon Superiore and Inferiore are two small adjacent high-mountain lakes located in the Paneveggio Natural Park (Italy) that offer the rare opportunity to study two iso-ecologic water environments differing only by area and volume in a ratio of 2:1 and 3:1, respectively. We took advantage of this setting to investigate phytoplankton dynamics, compare variability and productivity differences between the two basins, and assess size-dependent issues. The phytoplankton group of the Dinophyceae was chosen as the indicator organisms of ecological perturbation owing to their high sensitivity to environmental variations, as well as their acknowledged nature of versatile proxy to report global climatic changes. The study was conducted for over 10 years with fortnightly samplings. Results indicated that (a) the Dinophyceae communities in the smaller lake were significantly more resistant to changes exerted by the fluctuation of lakewater transparency and pH; and (b) the smaller lake sustained a consistently higher production with an average Dinophyceae density 1.73 fold higher than that of the larger lake. The coefficients of variation show that the chemical parameters in the smaller lake display higher time-related fluctuation while being spatially homogeneous and that such conditions correlate with a higher stability of the Dinophyceae assemblage. The use of this setting is also proposed as a model to test relationships between ecosystem production and physical stability.
