The purpose of this study was to investigate middle school students' perceptions about global environmental problems using drawings. The study was involved the collection of drawing data from 112 ninth grade students from a middle school in Daegu Metropolitan City. The environment task was administrated to students drew a drawing of an global environmental problems and explained their drawing in their own words. Also, students was asked to write what he or she can do to solve global environmental problems. The results are as follows: First, air pollution is the most important global environmental problem, followed by water pollution, global warming, sea level rise, deforestation, waste, loss of biodiversity, and so on. Second, the students' drawings were characterized into two aspects: One is a macroscopic viewpoint and the other is everyday viewpoint. Third, the students' practical action plan to do solve global environmental problems were walk, public traffic, do not throw trash, plant trees, etc. Educators should take into account the perceptions of global environmental problems and teaching-learning strategies to enhance students' understanding of global environment.

Many types of disasters are related to environmental problems. Today, frequently occurring disasters and global environmental problems have begun to threaten human life and welfare. Consequently, building sustainable communities requires assessing relationships between environmental problems and disasters using a broad, open approach and with a long-term perspective. This paper attempts to identify the need for conceptualizing disasters and environmental problems together by comparing mechanisms of both disasters and environmental problems, and attempts to integrate both of these seemingly different types of phenomena as similar types of risk threatening human existence. Based on this work, a chart is proposed for qualitatively organizing disasters, environmental problems and their mutual influences, as well as providing a framework for potential quantitative analysis. It is hoped this research serves to contribute to effective mitigation to both disasters and environmental problems in today's age of global environmental issues.

The purpose of this study was to investigate elementary school students' awareness about socio-scientific issues and solutions about environmental topics by using their drawings. For this study, 489 students were participated in 3 provincial regions, Incheon, Dangjin and Pohang in Korea. The students participated in a drawing activity to express their ideas of the socio-scientific issues and solutions related to 'environmental problems.' The analysis of the data include that the students displayed most awareness towards air pollution, water pollution and trash problems. However, the global environmental problems such as global warming and climate change were perceived very low. The interesting thing was about 8% of the students, who drew global environmental problems, tried to explain their drawings using scientific knowledge. But they revealed misconceptions as well. For instance, they were not good at connecting their science knowledge with environmental problems. About 80% of the students drew the pictures, showing solutions in personal context. They mainly drew 3 kinds of solutions: 'Reduce trash', 'Preserve ecosystem' and 'Saving of resources & energy'. Most students suggested to administrate the action plans. About 19% of the students drew 'campaign to save the forest' or 'develop alternative energy' in social context. And only 1 student drew UN conference to solve the environmental problems in national context.

Today, environmental pollution and destruction due to the industrialization of our modem society have been the global issues. Although now we can lead affluent lives through science technologies and economic development, these environmental problems have resulted in striking the harmonious balance between human beings and nature and threatened human lives with abnormal weather caused by the global warming, destruction of the ozone layer, and El Nino phenomenon, acid rain, decrease in species diversity, movement of hazardous materials, and harmful waste increase. We are aware of the importance of environmental education, but in reality, it seems impossible to implement appropriate environmental education on account of our educational climate which exclusively focuses on the entrance examination. However, environmental education is the most ultimate solution for those problems in that only when students understand our environment fully and grow habits to protect it through environmental education, the present environmental problems can be solved and more serious problems that can be resulted in the future can possibly be prevented. Thus, this study has examined the effect of using image media in the environment subject on students' environmental sensitivity. According to the results, it was shown that it had positive effects on 'sensitivity of environment', 'attitudes towards environment', and 'environmental affinitive behaviors'.

There is a question, 'Which is beautiful, a flower or a star?'. Its answer is different from one person .to another. It is only a matter of what one is interested in. It is very difficult for most school pupils, who will have non-scientific jobs, to understand science courses taught currently in school, because each science (physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science) is independently taught from the other sciences. Therefore, their knowledge of sciences obtained during their school period does not significantly help their understanding of global environmental problems. I am proposing that several scientific stories should be prepared to connect all the related scientific phenomena in order to give those pupils ideas in understanding global environmental problems. I believe that astronomy is able to play an important role in this context.

In this study we reviewed how acid rain as the global environmental problems was dealt with geography textbooks from Korea and England. The results are as follows. First, unlike geography textbooks from England, the concept and criteria of acid rain are not explained exactly in Korea geography textbooks. Second, whereas the cause of acid rain was explained with natural and artificial factors in geography textbooks from England, in Korea the artificial factors only were explained. But if the artificial factors only will be introduced to students, they may misunderstand about the acid rain. Third, the results and policies of acid rain were provided in geography textbooks from Korea and England. But whereas they were deal with separately in Korea, in textbooks from England they were provided with their patterns and concrete cases. So it is necessary to provide the exact concept, results and processes of the global environmental problems structurally in geography textbooks. And it is necessary to provide the results and their policies of the global environmental problems with concrete cases for students' understanding and sympathy about them. If the concepts and causes of global environmental problems are not understood previously, it is possible to stimulate only the moral and ethical aspects too much when the results and policies of them is introduced in geography textbooks.

As the global environmental crisis has been emerged as an important problem threatening the survival of the mankind, the environmental problems are recognized as a great issue governing the destiny of the whole mankind as well as a national problem. Therefore, more active attitude playing a leading role of global and local environmental preservation is required, escaping from conventional passive position for the minimization of economic damages according to global environment regulations. This study evaluates the 150 university students' consciousnesses and attitudes of the seriousness, major policies and issues of environmental pollutions, extracts their consciousness of environment and practicable tasks for the 21st century and is to give the basic reference materials of environmental policy development.

Air pollution problem has been one of the most urgent global environmental problems since UN Framework Convention on Climate Change accepted in Rio Conference, 1992. International environmental regulations of global community to reduce the green house gases have influenced the domestic environmental policies. International trends of environmental regulation are introduced in this paper.

This study aims to understand and compare the characteristics of two major approaches to solving global environmental problems - an academic approach including scholarly activities of environmental sciences and a practical approach of environmental movements led by NGOs - by employing informetric analysis methods. Knowledge structure of environmental sciences is depicted through co-citation networks of subject categories assigned to the cited journals in the discipline of environmental sciences for the 10-year period from 2000 to 2009. Furthermore, major interests of environmental NGOs are identified on the basis of external link data collected from web sites of the NGOs. Co-word analyses are also performed using the texts of journal papers in environmental sciences as well as news articles provided by NGO sites. Through the analyses, dominant subject areas of environmental sciences and environmental movements are identified demonstrating similarities and differences between the two approaches.

Environmental problems like global warming have now become important issues that should be considered in all industries, including construction. In South Korea, many studies have been conducted to achieve the government's goals of reduction in environmental impacts. However, the research on buildings has only focused on CO₂ emission as a research target despite the fact that other environmental impacts resulting from ozone depletion and acidification should also be considered, in addition to global warming. In this regard, this study attempted to propose assessment criteria and methods to evaluate the environmental performance of the structures from various aspects. The environmental impact category can be divided into global impacts, regional impacts, and local impacts. First, global impacts include global warming, ozone layer depletion, and abiotic resource depletion, while regional impacts include acidification, eutrophication, and photochemical oxidation. In addition, noise and vibration occurring in the building construction phase are defined as local impacts. The evaluation methods on the eight environmental impacts will be proposed after analyzing existing studies, and the methods representing each environmental load as monetary value will be presented. The methods presented in this study will present benefits that can be obtained through green buildings with a clear quantitative assessment on structures. Ultimately, it is expected that if the effects of green buildings are clearly presented through the findings of this study, the greening of structures will be actively expanded.
