  • Ceramic Fiber separator is the promising material for thermal battery system because it reduces the production cost and offers the potential to a new application compared to a pellet type electrolyte. The molten salt electrolytes for thermal battery were prepared by the impregnation of the commercial glass filters such as GF-A, C and F (Whatman, USA) with two types of molten-lithium salts, LiCl-KCl and LiK-LiBr-LiF. The wetting properties were evaluated by wetting balance test and wetting angle measurement. The wetting behaviors were strongly affected by the composition of the molten salts and the pore structure of the glass separators. The optimum wetting conditions for maximum loading and effective retention of the molten electrolyte were also studied.

  • This study focused on the material characteristics and archaeometric relationship between the molten glass and bronze materials within the crucibles and gilt-bronze Bodhisattva statue excavated from the Ssangbukri site in Buyeo, Korea. Yellowish green to red brown vitreous material in the crucibles was identified as lead glass which contained scarce amount of BaO, and low $Al_2O_3$ and CaO. Metallic molten material was identified as bronze of copper-tin-lead alloy with low amount of impurities that indicated well-refined materials. Also, cassiterite was used for raw metal ore of tin. The Bodhisattva statue consisted of major copper with trace impurities in the core metal, and gold amalgam in the gilded layer. Though lead isotopic analysis showed contradictory results in each lead glass, bronze and Bodhisattva statue that required further examination, it could be stated that the statue was made in the Ssangbukri site based on the high-level technical skills of bronze production.

  • Quartz glass is a key material for making semiconductor process components because of its purity, low thermal expansion, high UV transmittance and relatively low cost. Domestic quartz glass has a market worth about 500 billion won in 2018, and the market power of Japanese materials is very high. Quartz glass for semiconductor process can be divided into general process and exposure. For general process, molten quartz glass is mainly used, but synthetic quartz glass with higher purity is preferred. Synthetic quartz glass is used as the photomask for the exposure process. Recently, as semiconductors started the sub-nm process, the transition from the transmission type using ArF ultraviolet (194 nm) to the reflection type using EUV ultraviolet (13.5 nm) began. Therefore, the characteristics required for the synthetic quartz glass substrates used so far are also rapidly changing. This article summarizes the current technical trends of quartz glass and recent technical issues. Lastly, the present situation and development possibility of quartz glass technology in Korea were diagnosed.

  • This study was to identify the material characteristics and provenance of the crucibles, potteries and roof tiles from the Wonsinheungdong site in Daejeon, Korea. Similar mineral composition of each samples showed by microscopic observation and X-ray diffraction analysis. However, wall thickness and mineral characterization of each ceramic artifacts are quite different. The pottery is characterized by thin wall with 0.5 to 0.7 cm and fine grained clay matrix. While the crucible and roof tile has thick wall with 1.3 to 2.5 cm, poorly sorted texture of many quarz, orthoclase and plagioclase whithin ceramic fabric. And large elonagated voids formed by hydrocarbone of straw during the firing and loose matrix obseved in crucible. All ceramic samples and ground soil of the site show similar mineralogical characteristics geochemical behavior and clay-mineralization degree. This indicates making that the soil is probable to be a raw material of all ceramic from the Wonsinheungdong site. Also, firing temperature of most ceramic artifacts are estimated as 850 of all ceramic from the Wonsinheungdong site. Also, firing temperature of most ceramic artifacts are estimated as 850 to $950^{\circ}C$ but hardest pottery fired high temperature between 1,050 to $1,150^{\circ}C$. The vitreous molten materials interpreted in slag included segregation of copper and tin. But it can not exclude the possibility that the glass molten material because observed reddish and greenish vitreous fine structure under microscopic.

  • In order to prevent adhering of molten glass on a mold wall, the wall is swabbed with lubricant oil before forming. However, the swabbing process can be removed from the entire processes of the glass forming if the mold wall is made of a porous sintered material. The purpose of the present study is to manufacture a sintered material(having a sintered density of $85{\~}90\%$)which is the most appropriate into. plane material for a glass mold. For the research, SUS310L-based coarse powder (${\~}150{\mu}m$) and SUS420J2-based fine powder ($40{\~}50{\mu}m$) were used for the compact materials, and effects of compaction pressure and sintering condition(atmosphere, temperature) were investigated. The results obtained were as fellows. (1) By means of solid phase sintering, a desired sintering density could not be achieved in any case when using a 310L-based powder having a large particle size. (2) When sintering green compacts(compaction pressure of $2ton/cm^2$) in a commercial vacuum furnace(at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours), the sintered compacts had densities of $6.2g/cm^3(79\%)$ for 310L + 0.03$\%$B, $6.6g/cm^3 (86\%)$ for 420J2, $7.3g/cm^3(95\%)$ for 420J2+(0.03)$\%$B, and $7.6g/cm^3(99\%)$ for 420j2+(0.06)$\%$B, respectively. As a result, it is regarded that sintered compacts having a desired porosity may be achieved by vacuum sintering the 420J2-based powder (low pressure compaction) and the 310L+0.03$\%$B-based powder (high pressure compaction).

  • This study suggested a new method for the solidification of molten salt waste generated from the electro-metallurgical process in the spent fuel treatment. Using binary material system, sodium silicate and phosphoric acid, metal chlorides were converted into metal phosphate in the micro-reaction module formed by SiO$_{2} particles. The volatile element in the reaction module would little vaporized below 1100$^{circ}$C After the gel product was mixed with borosilicate glass powder and thermally treated at 1000$^{circ}$C, li exists as Li$_{3}$PO$_4$ separated from glass phase and, Cs and Sr would be incorporated into an amorphous phase from XRD analysis. In case of the addition of ZrCl$_{4}$ to the binary system, the gel products were transformed into NZP structure considered as an prospective ceramic waste form after heat-treatment above 700 $^{circ}$C. From these results, the gel-route pretreatment can be considered as an effective approach to the solidincation of molten salt waste by the confirmed process or waste form and this also would be an alternative method on the ANL method using zeolites in USA by the confirmation of its chemical durability as an future work.

  • High performance functional fibers are demanded increasingly in the modern industries, while the inorganic fibers such as carbon fibers, glass fibers, and metal fibers are representative among them in that they have high strength, consistent properties in a broad temperature change, etc.. This paper reports on the experimental trial to apply the microwave furnace on melting the natural basalt rock that spreads overall on the global surface and is supposed to be used as the raw material for the inorganic high performance fiber. Results showed that the new method to use the microwave as the heating source to melt the basalt rock was feasible. The crucible spinning could effectively applied for producing the basalt fibers up to 10 micrometer diameter, when the crushed basalt rocks were used. For drawing the molten basalt the drawing roller surface feature was a very important factor.
