  • In nowadays, the infrared optics is frequently employed to various fields such as military, aerospace, industry and medical. To develop the infrared optics, special glasses which can transmit infrared wave are required. Ge(Germanium), Si(silicon), and fluoride glasses are typically used for material of the infrared optics. Compared with Ge and Si glasses, fluoride glasses have high transmittance in infrared wavelength range. Additionally, UV(ultraviolet) and visible light can be transmitted through fluoride glasses. There characteristics of fluoride glasses makes it possible to evaluate optical performance with generally used visible testing equipment. In this paper, we used design of experiment to find ultra precision machining characteristic of Ge and fluoride glasses and optimized machining process to obtain required form accuracy of PV(Peak to Valley) $0.2\;{\mu}m$.

  • Powder blasting technique has been considered one of the most appropriate micro machining methods for hard and brittle materials, since the productivity is high and the heat layers caused by material removal are very thin. Recent development of special purposed parts, such as the parts for semiconductor processing, the parts for LCD, sensors for micro machine fabrication and so on, has been expanded. Thus, it is essential to develop powder blasting technologies for micromachining of hard and brittle materials such as glass, ceramics and so on. In this paper, the characteristics of powder blasted glass surface were tested under various blasting parameters. Finally, we proposed a predictive model for powder blasting process using the neural network and the response surface method. Detail analysis of the simulation results is carried out and the performance of two predictive models is compared.

  • Due to material-specific vulnerabilities, the surfaces of the liquid crystal glasses used in mobile phones can crack easily, with even the smallest cracks undergoing propagation. To protect the glass surfaces, films are attached to the surfaces during the mobile phone production process. However, after machining the liquid crystal, removal of the film on the liquid crystal surface using chemical and mechanical methods is required. In this research, a peeling apparatus was developed for removing the films attached to liquid crystal surfaces during the production process. Mechanical attachment and design automation through experimentation and finite element modelling were performed to confirm the validity of the design.

  • Plasma Display Panel(PDP) is a type of flat panel display utilizing the light emission produced by gas discharge. Barrier Ribs of PDP separating each sub-pixel prevents optical and electrical crosstalks from adjacent sub-pixels. Mold for forming barrier ribs has been newly researched to overcome the disadvantages of conventional manufacturing process such as screen printing, sand-blasting and photosensitive glass methods. Mold for PDP barrier ribs have stripes of micro grooves transferring glass-material wall. In this paper, Stripes of grooves of which width 48${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 270${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, depth 124${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, pitch 274${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ was acquired by machining hard and brittle materials of WC, Silicon, Alumina with dicing saw blade. Maximum roughness of the bottom and sidewall of the grooves was respectively 120nm, 287nm in grooving WC. Maximum tilt angle caused by difference between upper-most width and lower-most width was 2$^{\circ}$. Maximum Radius of bottom curvatures was 7.75${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. This results satisfies the specification for barrier ribs of 50 inch XGA PDP if the groove form of mold was fully transferred to the barrier ribs. Barrier ribs were formed with Silicone rubber mold, which is transferred from grooved hard materials. Silicone rubber mold has elasticity accommodating the waveness of lower glass plate of PDP.

  • This study has been focused on an effective surface finishing method combining ELID (ELectrolytic In-process Dressing) and MAP (Magnetic Assisted Polishing) for the nano-precision mirror grinding of glass-lens molding mould. ELID grinding is an excellent technique for mirror grinding of various advanced metallic or nonmetallic materials. A polishing process is also required for elimination of scratches present on ELID grinded surfaces. MAP has been used as polishing method due to its high polishing efficiency and superior surface quality. It also presents some techniques for achieving the nanometer roughness of the hard material such as WC-Co, which are extensively used in precision tooling material.

  • In the machining of glass fiber reinforced plastics(GFRP), turning has been often used. But the most of past studies have been interested in the effect of fiber orientation on tool wear. In this study, the effects of fiber contents and cutting speeds on tool wear, cutting force and surface roughness are investigated experimentally. By proper selection of cutting tool, the variables are cutting speed, fiber contents and cutting length with fixed feed rate and depth of cut. The fiber contents have major effects on coated tool wear which observed as abrasive wear type.

  • In the present study, $Si_3N_4-SiC$ ceramic composites that contained up to 20 wt% of dispersed SiC particles were fabricated via hot-pressing with an oxynitride glass. The microstructure, the mechanical properties, and the cutting performance of resulting ceramic composites were investigated. By fixing the composition as $Si_3N_4-20$ wt% SiC, the effect of sintering time on the microstructure, the mechanical properties, and the cutting performance were also investigated. For machining of gray cast i개n, the tool life increases with increasing the amount of SiC content in the composites; The tool life also increased with increasing the sintering time. The tool life of the home-made cutting tools was very close to that of commercial $Si_3N_4$ cutting tool. The superior cutting performance of $Si_3N_4-SiC$ ceramic cutting tools suggests the possibility to be a new ceramic tool material.

  • Application of ceramics, carbide, ferrite has grown considerably due to their mechanical properties such as high degree hardness, chemical stability, super wear resistance. Despite these characters, the use of advanced material has not increased because of poor machinability. The application of metal bonded wheel was proposed. But it is difficult that metal bond wheel can be dressed. Recently, to solve this problem, the technology of in-process electrolytic dressing is developed. This method need wheel for electrolytic dressing, power supply and electrolyte. The aim of this study is development of CIB-D wheel for electrolytic and its evaluation of electrolytic characteristics, and achieve ultra-precision lapping of carbide, optic glass.
