The purpose of this study was to compare the apical leakage and adaptation to the dentinal wall of a glass ionomer root canal cement(Ketac-Endo) with those of AH-26 and Tubli-Seal. 102 single-rooted teeth were insrumented with step-back technique and randomly divided into four groups according to kinds of root canal cements: Ketac-Endo, AH-26, Tubli-Seal, and no root canal cement. Four experimental groups were as follows; Group 1 : Filling with gutta-percha and Ketac-Endo Group 2 : Filling with gutta-percha and AH-26 Group 3 : Filling with gutta-percha and Tubli-Seal Group 4 : Filling with gutta-percha without root canal cement All the specimens were obturated with lateral condensation technique, and stored in 100% humidity for 4 days. 20 teeth in each group were placed in centrifuge tube filled with India ink, and then centrifuged for 20 minutes at 3,000 rpm. And they were evaluated for linear dye leakage using a stereoscope and analyzed by one-way ANOVA. 22 teeth were split longitudinally and evaluated the adaptation to the dentinal wall using scanning electron microscope(4 teeth in each group) and stereoscope(2 teeth in 1, 2, 3 group). The obtained results were as follows ; 1. In case of not used root canal cement(Group 4), there was showed much degree of dye penetration comparerd with used root canal cements (Group 1, 2, 3)(P<0.01). 2. In the case of used root canal cements(Group 1, 2, 3), there was no significant difference in linear leakage in groups(P>0.01). 3. In the case of used root canal cements(Group 1, 2, 3), there was showed intimate adaptation to the dentinal wall independent on kinds of root canal cements. 4. Fractured surfaces indicated failure of cohesion in Ketac-Endo, and failure of adhesion to dentine in AH-26 and Tubli-Seal. 5. According to similar apical leakage and adaptability to the dentinal wall to another root canal cements, it is possible to be used glass-ionomer cement as root canal cement.
Objectives: This study evaluated the effects of a bleaching agent on the composition, mechanical properties, and surface topography of 6 conventional glass-ionomer cements (GICs) and one resin-modified GIC. Materials and Methods: For 3 days, the specimens were subjected to three 20-minute applications of a 37% $H_2O_2$-based bleaching agent and evaluated for water uptake (WTK), weight loss (WL), compressive strength (CS), and Knoop hardness number (KHN). Changes in surface topography and chemical element distribution were also analyzed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. For statistical evaluation, the Kruskal-Wallis and Wilcoxon paired tests (${\alpha}=0.05$) were used to evaluate WTK and WL. CS specimens were subjected to 2-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey post hoc test (${\alpha}=0.05$), and KH was evaluated by one-way ANOVA, the Holm-Sidak post hoc test (${\alpha}=0.05$), and the t-test for independent samples (${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: The bleaching agent increased the WTK of Maxxion R, but did not affect the WL of any GICs. It had various effects on the CS, KHN, surface topography, and the chemical element distribution of the GICs. Conclusions: The bleaching agent with 37% $H_2O_2$ affected the mechanical and surface properties of GICs. The extent of the changes seemed to be dependent on exposure time and cement composition.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of dentin pretreatment with Dentin Conditioner, Ultra-Etch, conditioner of Fuji Plus cement on the shear bond strength of resin-reinforced glass ionomer cements to dentin and analyze the fractured surfaces. To evaluate the bond strength, the extracted human teeth which had uniform area of exposed dentin were cemented with conventional glass ionomer cement, 3M $RelyX^{TM}$ Luting (Vitremer luting cement), Fuji Plus cement after dentin pretreatment. The shear bond strength was measured using the Universal testing machine (Instron Co., USA) with a crosshead speed of 1mm/m. The effect of dentin pretreatment was evaluated by observing pretreated dentin surfaces under the scanning electron microscope, measuring the shear bond strength and observing the fractured surfaces under the scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows : On the SEM observation of surface morphology, the specimens treated with Dentin Conditioner. Ultra-Etch and conditioner of Fuji Plus cement were removed the smear layer and funneled dentinal tubules in dentin surfaces. In $RelyX^{TM}$ Luting cement group, shear bond strength of pretreated group was significantly higher than control group. In Fuji Plus cement group and Fuji I group, regardless of the type of pretreatment agents, there was tendency of increase in the shear bond strength. On the SEM observation of fractured surfaces, as the shear bond strength increase, it were shown thicker cement layers and were not shown dentinal tubules According to these results. it were shown that dentin pretreatment have much effect on bonding states.
To evaluate the micro leakage of compomer, 4 materials were divided into 4 groups of 15 cavities each.(Group 1: Z-100, Group 2: Dyarct AP, Group 3: Fuji II LC, Group 4: Compoglass) After the class II cavities were prepared using carbide bur No. 553, all specimen were restored by incremental filling technique. In group 3, Z-100 was filled with a base of a light curing glass-ionomer. After 7 days, all specimens were thermocycled between $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$ for 500 cycles, followed by placement in 50% silver nitrate dye for 2 hours at $37^{\circ}C$. After rinsed in distilled water, these teeth were immersed in photodeveloping solution and exposed to fluorescent light for 6 hours. Teeth were then washed in distilled water to remove the photodeveloping solution, sectioned mesio-distally and evaluated. The results were as follows : 1. In the cervical portion, there was significant difference between Fuji II LC and other groups(Z-100, Dyract AP, Compoglass), Fuji II LC had the least value.(p<0.05) 2. In the cervical portion, there was not significant difference among Dyract AP, Z-100 and Compoglass. 3. In the occlusal portion, there was not significant difference among Dyract AP, Z-100 and Compoglass. From the results above, In enamel, microleakage of compomer such as Dyract AP and Compoglass resemble to that of composite resin. It is thought that it is due to characteristics of composite resin portion of compomer. But in dentin, microleakage of compomer is higher than that of resin modified glass ionomer cement, it is thought that in compomer, acid-base reaction is not developed with dentin.

Purpose: Cention N (Ivoclar Vivadent) was a recently introduced alkasite-based restorative material that was expected to replace amalgam and glass ionomer cement. This material was an esthetic restoration with adequate mechanical strength and release of fluoride and calcium. The purpose of this study was to measure the water sorption and water solubility of Cention N and evaluate its long-term durability compared to other esthetic restorations (Resin-Modified Glass Ionomer cement [RMGIC], Giomer, Composite Resin). Materials and Methods: Twenty specimens each of Cention N (CN), Resin Modified-Glass Ionomer Cement (FJ), Giomer (BF), and Composite Resin (FZ) were made. After each specimen was completely dried in a desiccator for 24 hours using a vacuum pressure pump, the specimen was weighed (m1). After that, the specimen was immersed in distilled water at 37℃ for 7 days, stored in a drying oven, and weighed (m2). After drying completely for 24 hours in a desiccator, the specimen was weighed (m3) to calculate the water absorption and water solubility using Formulas 1 and 2. The measured values were statistically processed and analyzed using SPSS, and the significance level was set at 0.05. Result: When measuring water sorption, FJ (122.61 ㎍/mm3) showed significantly higher water sorption than CN (35.42 ㎍/mm3) (P<0.05). There was no significant difference between FZ (18.03 ㎍/mm3) and BF (14.76 ㎍/mm3) (P=0.930). When measuring water solubility, CN (6.65 ㎍/mm3) showed significantly higher water solubility than FJ (1.47 ㎍/mm3) (P<0.05). Conclusion: Cention N had lower water sorption than RMGIC, but higher water solubility, indicating that it is more vulnerable to moisture and has lessened long-term durability.
To overcome problems of conventional glass ionomers, resin components have been added to glass ionomers. On a continuum between glass ionomers and composites are a variety of blends, employing different proportions of acid-base and free radical reactions to bring about cure. Popular groups defined between the ends are resin-modified glass-ionomers(RMGIs), polyacid-modified composite resins(Compomers) and ionomer modified resins. These groups show different clinical properties, and in selecting these materials for a restoration, one should sufficiently understand these different setting properties. In this study, some difference in the setting characteristics of different groups of hybrid ionomers were examined. Two RMGIs (Fuji2 LC,GC / Vitremer, 3M), three Compomers (Dyract AP, Dentsply / F2000, 3M / Elan, Kerr) were involved in this study. The identification of the setting characteristics of different groups was achieved by a two-stage study. First, thermal analysis was performed by a differential scanning calorimeter, and then the hardness of each group at different depth and time were measured by a micro-hardness tester. Thermal analysis was performed to identify the inorganic filler content and to record the heat change during setting process. The setting process was progressed for each material by chemical set mode and light-cured mode. In the hardness test, samples of materials were prepared with a 6mm-diameter metal ring, and the hardness was measured at the top, and 1mm, 2.5mm, 4mm below at just after a 40 second-cure, and after 10 minutes, 24 hours, and 7 days. Statistical analysis was performed by Mann-Whitney rank sum test to assess significant differences between set modes and types of materials, and by ANOVA and T-test to evaluate the statistical meanings of data at different times and depths of each materials. Followings are findings and conclusions derived from this study. Thermal analysis; 1. Compomers show no evidence of chemical setting while RMGIs exhibit heat output during the process of chemical setting. 2. Heat of cure of RMGIs exceed Compomers. 3. The net heat output of RMGIs through light-cured mode is higher than through chemically set mode. Hardness test; 1. Initial hardness of RMGIs immediately after light cure is relatively low, but the hardness increases as time goes by. On the contrary, Comomers do not show evident increase of the hardness following time. 2. Compomers show a marked decrease of setting degree as the depth of the material increases. In RMGIs, the setting degree at different depths does not significantly differ.
It has been submitted that different ion solutions containing sulfate induce crystal growth and might substitute conventional acid etching for pretreatment of enamel in orthodontic bonding(${\AA}rtun$ et al., Am. J. Orthod. 85, 333, 1984). This investigation was designed to evaluate the relevance of crystal growth on the enamel surface as an alternative to conventional acid etching in direct bonding of orthodontic brackets. Annexing Li2SO4, MgSO4, K2SO4 respectively in the solution with $25\%$ polyacrylic md 0.3M sulfuric acids were employed to enhance the crystal growth. Human bicuspids were treated with various parameters as combinations of crystal growth and glass ionomer cement, crystal growth and orthodontic resin, acid etching and orthodontic resin for an investigative purpose. Crystal growth solution containing MgSO4 showed the highest shear bond strength(15.6MPa) within the groups of bonding brackets with glass ionomer cement(p<0.01). Bonding with glass ionomer cement on the surface of crystal growth demonstrated higher shear bond strength than with orthodontic resin(p<0.001). Bonding with glass ionomer cement on the surface treated with crystal growth solution containing MgSO4 or K2SO4 was not different shear bond strength statistically from bonding with orthodontic resin on the acid-etched surface. It suggests that bonding brackets with glass ionomer cement on the surface treated with crystal growth solution containing MgSO4 or K2SO4 is a potential alternative to bonding with resin on the acid etched sufrace.

The purpose of this study was to compare the shear bond strength and the anticariogenicity of glass ionomer cement with conventional bonding resin and fluoride releasing resin. After the shear bond strength test, scanning electron microscopic observation was performed for the evaluation of the fracture patterns in each group. Under the polarizing light microscope, artificially induced carious lesions were evaluated and the lesion depths of the samples were measured using image analyzing program(Image-Pro $PLUS^{TM}$, USA). 50 sound maxillary premolars were used for the bond strength test and another 30 for the anticariogenic test. Data collected were analyzed statistically using Oneway-ANOVA and Scheffe test. The results were as follows: 1. Glass ionomer groups(G-III, IV, V) generally showed the lower bond strength values than resin groups(G-I, II). 2. Among the two resin groups, G-I showed the higher bond strength than G-II without statistically significant difference between them(p>.05). 3. Within glass ionomer groups, statistical significance was found between G-III and G-V with the superior bond strength in G-V (p<.05). 4. Under the SEM, adhesive failure was the predominant fracture pattern in G-I and II, whereas cohesive failures were mainly observed in G-III. In G-IV and V, mixed type of pattern where the both fracture patterns coexisted within samples could be seen. 5. In evaluation of the depth of artificially developed carious lesion, glass ionomer group showed shallower depth than resin groups with statistical significance between G-III and G-I, II(p<.05). Among resin groups, fluoride releasing resin(G-II) showed the shallower depth than conventional resin(G-I)(p<.05).

Fuji VII is a glass-ionomer cement specially targeted for early protection in erupting first and second molars. Properties of Fuji VII such as very high level of fluoride release, low viscosity and no need to preliminarily etch the substrate would be useful to erupting molars with primary pit and fissure caries or hypoplastic area for preventive goal or remineralization. The purpose of this study were to evaluate remineralization of Fuji VII glass ionomer cement and to compare with one of other restorative materials such as conventional glass ionomer cement, resin-modified glass ionomer cement, compomer and composite resin. Forty-two extracted human molars were used for this study. All teeth were immersed in demineralizing solution for 48 hours after Class V cavity preparation was made on sound proximal surface. The teeth were randomly divided into six groups and restored with Fuji VII, Fuji II, Fuji II LC improved, F2000, $Filtek^{TM}$ Z250 and control group was unrestored. The middle area with $130{\pm}20{\mu}m$ thickness was separated from specimen using microtome and demineralized area was photographed under polarized microscope. Separated area was relocated to specimen and stored in artificial saliva, After four weeks, changes of demineralized area were observed and compared to them restorated immediately. The results from the this study can be summarized as follows ; 1. Fuji VII, Fuji II, Fuji II LC improved have more prominent remineralization effect than F2000, $Filtek^{TM}$ Z250, control group. 2. No significant differences in remineralization effect are seen between Fuji VII and Fuji II, Fuji II LC improved.
The effect of inlay surface treatment on bonding was investigated when resin inlay was bonded to resin-modified glass-ionomer base with resin cement. For the preparation of glass-ionomer base, resin-modified glass-ionomer cement (Fuji II LC, GC Co., Japan) was filled in class I cavities of 7mm in diameter and 2mm in depth made in plastic molds. Eighty eight resin inlay specimens were made with Charisma$^{(R)}$ (Kulzer, Germany) and then randomly assigned to the four different surface treatment conditions: Group I, $50{\mu}m$ aluminium oxide sandblasting and silane treatment ; Group II, silane treatment alone ; Group III, sandblasting alone, and Group IV (control), no surface treatment. After a dentin bonding agent with primer (One-Step$^{TM}$, Bisco Inc., IL., U.S.A.) was applied to bonding surface of resin inlay and base, resin inlay were cemented to glass-ionomer base with a resin cement (Choice$^{TM}$, Bisco Inc., IL., U.S.A.). Shear bond strengths of each specimens were measured using Instron universal testing machine (4202 Instron, lnstron Co., U.S.A.) and fractured surfaces were examined under the stereoscope. Statistical analysis was done with one-way ANOVA and Dunkan's multiple range test. The results were as follows: 1. Sandblasting and silane treatment provided the greatest bond strength(10.56${\pm}$1.95 MPa), and showed a significantly greater bond strength than sandblasting alone or no treatment (p<0.05). 2. Silane treatment provided a significantly greater bond strength(9.77${\pm}$2.04 MPa) than sandblasting alone or no treatment (p<0.05). However, there was no significant difference in bond strength between sandblasting treatment and silane one (p>0.05). 3. Sandblasting alone provided no significant difference in bond strength from no treatment (p>0.05). 4. Stereoscopic examination of fractured surface showed that sandblasting and silane treatment or silane treatment alone had more cohesive failure mode than adhesive failure mode. 5. In relationship between shear bond strength and failure mode, cohesive failure occurred more frequently as bond strength increased.
