  • Epoxy/Organically Modified Layered Silicate Nanocomposites were prepared by dispersing synthetic layered silicate modified with alkyl ammonium ions. In the dispersing process, the organically modified layered silicate were mixed in epoxy resin with shearing, and aggregation of the silicate were removed by centrifugal separation after mixing epoxy resin and silicates. Micrographs taken by transmission electron microscopy(TEM) indicate that the nanocomposites have a mixed morphology including both parallel silicate layers and exfoliated silicate layers area, As the thermal properties, the glass transition temperature of the nanocomposites was shifted to a higher temperature($+6^{\circ}C$)than pure epoxy. Furthermore, dispersion of OMLS will prevented relative permittivity from increasing at a high temperature above the glass transition temperature.

  • When a thermoset conductive adhesive joints are subjected to the thermal cycles, the thermal stresses are developed around the joints. Most of in-plane, hi-axial components of these residual stresses induces large tensile peel stresses and weakens adhesive joints. Also these stresses vary with thermal cycles, and result in thermal fatigue loading and debonding propagation. In this study, the thermal ratchetting effect in conductive adhesive joints are evaluated by the finite element analysis with the viscoelastic material model. In order to Investigate the relationship between thermal ratchetting and glass transition temperature, the mathematical material model has been developed experimentally by dynamic mechanical analysis. These material models are implemented to the finite element analysis with thermal loading cycles. And the stress profiles around the conductive adhesive joints are calculated. It has been observed that the thermal ratchetting occurs when the maximum temperature of thermal cycles is above the glass transition temperature. The peel and shear stress components increase as the thermal loading time increases. This will contributes to thermal fatigue fracture of the joints.

  • In order to use carbon dioxide, one of the green house gases, terpolymers have been synthesized from propylene oxide, cyclohexene oxide, and carbon dioxide with zinc glutarate as catalyst. The polymers have been investigated with FT-IR, $^1H$-NMR, DSC. The glass transition temperatures of terpolymers are dependendent upon mass ratio of the poly(alkylene carbonate by Fox equation.

  • This paper reported a study on the thermal, mechanical and electrical insulation properties of epoxy/mica composites. To investigate the effect of mica content, glass transition temperature, mechanical properties such as tensile and flexural strength, and insulation breakdown properties for epoxy composites with various contents of mica. The effect of insulation thickness on insulation breakdown property was also studied. It was observed that tensile and flexural strength decreased with increasing mica content, while elastic modulus increased as the mica content increased. AC insulation breakdown strength for all epoxy/mica composites was higher than that of neat epoxy and that of the system with 20 wt% mica was 14.4% improved. As was expected, insulation breakdown strength at $30^{\circ}C$ was far higher than that at $130^{\circ}C$, and it was also found that insulation breakdown strength was inversely proportion to insulation thickness.

  • Chitosans were obtained with varying deacetylation times using the ${\beta}$-chitin isolated from Todarodes pacificus, and their deacetylation degrees and average molecular weights were determined. Films prepared with the squid chitosans were characterized by estimating their tensile strengths, percent elongations, water vapor permeabilities, degree of swelling, and temperatures of glass transition and thermal decomposition. The results suggest that the squid chitosan films were comparable to common crustacean chitosan films in regard of mechanical, moisture barrier, and thermal properties, although further, multilateral investigations are necessary to make a more definitive conclusion.

  • A new series of polyarylate copolyesters were prepared by melt polycondensation of 1,4-diacetoxy-2,5-(α-phenylisopropyl)benzene with mixture of terephthalic acid and isophthalic acid in varying ratio. And their general properties such as the glass transition temperature, crystalline melting temperature, crystallinity and solubility were studied. The intrinsic viscosity values of the present polymers measured in a mixed solvent of phenol/p-chlorophenol/1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane ranged from 0.45 to 0.66 depending on the composition and molecular weight. The copolyesters containing greater than 20 mole % of isophthalic acid were found to be amorphous, whereas the homopolymer derived from terephthalic acid was semicrystalline with a melting point of 414℃. The glass transition temperatures of the polymers ranged from 165 to 180℃ depending on the composition. The copolyesters containing 50 mole % and greater of isophthalic acid moiety were soluble at room temperature in such common solvents as tetrahydrofuran, chloroform and N,N-dimethylformamide.

  • $SnO_2-B_2O_3-P_2O_5$ system were prepared by melt-quenching technique in the compositional series containing 50, 55 aod 60mol.% of $SnO_2$. A large glass-forming region was found at the phosphate side of the ternary system with homogeneous glasses containing up to 5-25mol.% of $B_2O_3$. For these glasses, thermal expansion coeffient($\alpha$), glass transition temperature(Tg), and glass softening temperature(Ts), were determined. The values a decrease with increasing $B_2O_3$ content, while Tg and Ts increased. The reason for the observed changes is local structure of the glasses. Local structure of the glasses was investigated by Raman and FT-IR measurements, suggesting that the number of bridging oxygens decreased whereas the non-bridging oxygen concentration increased with increasing $SnO_2$ content in the glasses.

  • The solubility of methane in poly(n-butyl methacrylate)(PnBMA) was determined at pressures up to 35 atm. These measurements were made by volumetric technique in the temperature range from -10 to 30$^{\circ}$C. The solubility was found to be a nonlinear function of the applied pressure and could be satisfactorily described by dual-mode sorption model at temperatures below the glass txansition temperature($T_g$) of the polymer. The Langmuir capacity constant decreased with increasing temperature and vanished near the glass transition temperature of PnBMA. The solubility isotherm became linear at temperatures above the glass transition temperature of PnBMA. The temperature dependence of the dual-mode sorption parameters was also discussed.

  • From extensive measurements of the resistance and the dynamic resistance as functions of magnetic field and temperature, we find that the transport in the insulating state beyond the superconductor-insulator (S-I) transition is dominated by bosons(Cooper pairs and/or vortices) and cannot be described by the theory of the fermionic insulating phase. The maximum of the magnetoresistance at B = B$_m$ and the following negative slope in R(B) with increasing field can be explained by the crossover from the "Bose-glass" to the "Fermi-glass" phase as suggested by Paalanen, Hebard, and Ruel. The zero bias peak in dv/dl for biases below the characteristic voltage V$_c$ (or current $I_c$), gives a clue for the assumption of the "dirty boson" model which states that the insulating state above the critical magnetic field is the phase where Cooper pairs are localized due to the Coulomb blockade with a nonvanishing order parameter. The shift to a lower value of the critical magnetic field by overlaying thin Au layer, which is known as a strong spin-orbit scatterer, also supports the bosonic nature of the S-I transition.

  • This paper presents a study on the dispersion effect of the X-Ray diffraction, glass transition and DMA properties of organic modifier clay/epoxy nanocomposites produced in a homogenizer. Several experiments were conducted including different types of dispersion condition with varying processing conditions such as homogenizer rotor speed and applied time of homogenizer. The effects of these variables on the dispersion properties of nanocomposites were then studied. In order to fully understand the experimental results, a X-ray diffraction, DSC and DMA were used to investigate the effect of above mentioned variables on microstructure and intercalation/exfoliation of organic modifier clay/epoxy nanocomposites. The results from this work could be used to determine the best processing condition to obtain appropriate levels of d-spacing, glasss transition temperature and storage modulus in organic modifier clay/epoxy nanocomposites.
