  • Toughened glass is known to have about four times larger external impact resistance than that of original glass. This study is aimed to verify that ceramic-printed toughened glass does not meet of GTR(Global Technical Regulations) No. 6 and its strength is lower than that of original glass through tests. The tests were conducted on the test pieces of original glass, toughened glass, and ceramic-printed toughened glass from five glass manufacturers. In Test 1, a 227g steel ball was dropped from a height of 2 meters, and damage was checked according to the test method of GTR No. 6. In Test 2, a steel ball was freely dropped from different heights and limited damage height was determined. In the result of Test 1 according to the test method of GTR No. 6, while all five test pieces of toughened glasses were not damaged, all the ceramic-printed toughened glass from the five manufacturers were damaged. In the result of Test 2, none of the five test pieces of toughened glass were damaged by a 10m ball drop, meanwhile, the original glasses were damaged by an average of 3m ball drop. And the results of the tests show that the ceramic-printed toughened glass does not have the features of toughened glass due to its very low strength. Therefore, this study contributes to the safety of consumers by considering the GTR No. 6, and by revising the toughened glass test method.

  • The damage behavior of soda-lime glass was studied due to a steel ball of 1mm and 2mm at oblique impact test. The thickness of glass specimen were 3mm and 5mm and oblique degrees of impact were 90$^{\circ}$,70$^{\circ}$ and 50$^{\circ}$. After the steel ball impact test, the crack patterns were investigated using a stereo-microscope. In addition, the finite element method was performed to analyze the stresses distribution and variation in the oblique impacted glass by steel ball. As a result of the impact test, the crack length of 90$^{\circ}$impacted glass was the largest and that of 50$^{\circ}$impacted glass was the smallest. In particular, as the impact velocity and diameter of the steel ball increased, the difference of crack length was prominent. The finite element analysis showed the maximum principle stresses distribution in contact area of glass specimen. The result of analysis was accorded with the crack growth behavior by the oblique impact test.

  • Biaxial flexure strength (ball-on-3-ball) and fracture toughness (indentation microfracture) of heat-pressable glass-ceramics for dental use were investigated in this study. Crystal phase and microstructure of glass-ceramics were analyzed by XRD. SEM, and TEM. Crack propagation in specimens was not effectively arrested by dispersed crystalline particles. However, higher degree of crystallization probably contributes to strengthening of glass-ceramics. Better clinical reliability can be expected from lithium disilicate glass-ceramic because of its significantly higher biaxial flexure strength and fracture toughness.

  • In this study, we tried to compare the effect of glass inserts on marginal leakage of composite resin restoration by comparing with that of several filling methods. The results obtained from this experiment were as follows ; 1. The degree of microleakage measured in glass inserts group was generally lower than that of the other groups. Statistical analysis showed significant intergroup difference between glass inserts and one complete unit, pre-polymerized composite resin ball(P<.05), but no significant difference between groups of glass inserts and increments(P>.05). 2. Scanning electron microscopic observation showed relatively large gap around resin-tooth interface in specimens restored the method of using the one complete unit and pre-polymerized composite resin ball whereas a denser and tighter was observed in increments and glass inserts group. Generally the gingival margin was shown to have better bonds than the occlusal margin in specimen of all groups. 3. In the present experiment, methods using the techniques of glass inserts and increments were evaluated to be superior to those of one complete unit, pre-polymerized composite resin ball in the aspect of microleakage. However, the result of this study could not determine the superiority of the use of glass inserts over incremental method. Besides the physical properties observed in this study, the practical aspect of clinical convenience should be considered in determining the selection of material.

  • Novel wafer-level fabrication of a glass ball-lens is realized for optoelectronic applications. A Pyrex wafer is bonded to a silicon wafer and cross-cut into a square-tile pattern, followed by wet-etching of the underlying silicon. Cubes of Pyrex on the undercut silicon are then turned into ball shapes by thermal reflow, and separated from the wafer by further etching of the silicon support. Radial variation and surface roughness are measured to be less than ${\pm}3\;{\mu}m$ and ${\pm}1\;nm$, respectively, for ball diameter of about $500\;{\mu}m$. A surface defect on the ball that is due to the silicon support is shown to be healed by using a silicon-optical-bench. Optical power-relay of the ball lens showed the maximum efficiency of 65% between two single-mode fibers on the silicon-optical-bench.

  • In order to study the impact fracture behavior of brittle materials, a steel-ball-impact experiment was Performed. Five kinds of materials were used in this study : soda-lime glass plates, glass/epoxy prepreg-one layer-bonded and unbonded glass plates, glass/epoxy prepreg-three layers-bonded and unbonded glass plates. Fracture patterns, the maximum stress and absorbed fracture energy were observed according to various impact velocities 40-120m/s. With increasing impact velocity, ring crack, cone crack, radial crack and lateral crack took place in the interior of glass plates. The generation of such cracks was largely reduced with glass/epoxy prepreg coating. Consequently, it is thought that the characteristics of the dynamic Impact fracture behavior could be evaluated using the absorbed fracture energy and the maximum stress measured at the back surface of glass plates.

  • Influence of $La_2O_3$ addition to $CaO-B_2O_3$-based glass on the water leaching resistance of the glass was first investigated. The optimized $La_2O_3-CaO-B_2O_3$(LCB) glass was ball milled for varying time, followed by mixing with $Al_2O_3$ crystalline phase to form $Al_2O_3$-LCB glass composites at $875^{\circ}C$ for 1h. Microwave dielectric properties of the composites were investigated as a function of the ball milling time of the LCB glass. Dielectric constant and quality factor of the composites were 6.31 and 13856 GHz, respectively, when the LCB glass was ball milled for 2h prior to mixing with $Al_2O_3$.
