  • The objective of the present study is to investigate the load delivery characteristics of a hybrid-renewable energy system with geothermal and solar heat sources for hot water, heating and cooling of a residential house in Korea. The hybrid energy system consists of ground source heat pump of 2 RT for cooling with a 150 m vertical U-bend ground heat exchanger, solar collectors of 4.8 m2 and gas fired backup boiler. The averaged coefficient of performance of geothermal module during cooling and heating seasons are evaluated as about 4.5 and 3.8, respectively.

  • Flashed steam system is one of the important geothermal power production methods. In this paper, optimum operations and performances of single and double flash systems are presented. It is shown that double flash system can produce about 26.5% more power than single flash system. Temperature of geothermal water($T_R$) is the most important parameter in the geothermal system. Optimum single and double flash temperatures and net power produced with these optimum conditions are expressed as a function of $T_R$ in this study. Thus net power output from geothermal resources can be estimated with the results of this work. Condenser Temperature($T_{con}$) is also important and the net power production can be shown as a function of ($T_R-T_{con}$. Volume flow rate per unit power is also to be considered as the condenser temperature decreases.

  • In this study, application of groundwater thermal energy by use of riverbank filtration(RBF) system is reviewed and checked as an energy resources. Also, the cooling and heating system using RBF was developed in Chang-Won Waterwork site to examine the feasibility in real operation of the system. We estimates the roughly overall energy obtained from RBF system if the system is used in cooling and heating. The water temperature and room temperature have been monitored to evaluate the efficiency of the system and the preliminary results show that the geothermal energy obtained by RBF could be adopted in cooling and heating energy source efficiently.

  • The Korean government has been making efforts to use renewable energy to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels for the heating system in greenhouses. The number of greenhouses that installed a geothermal heat pump system is 201 EA with the volume of 132.8 ha and 108,467kW from 2010-2014. The geothermal system, called a shallow geothermal system, with the temperature of $10-20^{\circ}C$ has accessories composed of a BHE and heat pump. Moreover, it is necessary to have a wide area to install the BHE and to drill to the depth of 200 m. On the other hand, even though the deep geothermal system needs a high drilling cost to obtain the temperature of $40-150^{\circ}C$, the system has the advantages of the small area required for the BHE and operation without a heat pump. In this study, the temperature of the return water and heat capacity were measured to obtain the geothermal energy efficiently on the condition of the water flow being changed in the BHE. The temperature according to the return water changes through the heat conduction based on the increase of ground temperature up to the underground depth has been calculated to conduct a simulation and is compared with the field experiment test results.

  • A ground-source heat pump system (GSHP) is more energy efficient than other heat-source systems because it uses annual constant underground and water temperatures. Especially, two-well geothermal systems using groundwater as the heat source can achieve higher performance than closed-loop geothermal systems. However, performance of two-well geothermal systems is decreased by occurring overflow according to scale during long-term operations. Therefore, this study presents a two-well pairing geothermal system that controls the groundwater level of a diffusion well. In addition, a two-well pairing geothermal system and an SCW geothermal system were installed, and a comparative analysis of cooling performance depending on system operation under the same load conditions was conducted. The result was that the average heat pump coefficient of performance (COP) of the two-well pairing system was 6.5, and the entire system COP was 4.3.

  • Open loop geothermal heat pumps have great potential where the groundwater resources are sufficient. Performance of open loop geothermal heat pump systems is considered higher than that of ground source heat pumps. Head and power calculation of submersible pumps, heat pump units, and piping are numerically based on regression data. Results shows that the system performance drops as the water level drops, and the lowest flow rates generally achieve the highest system COPs. The highest achievable cooling system COPs become 6.34, 6.12, and 5.95 as the groundwater levels are 5m, 15m, and 25m. The highest heating system COPs also become 4.59, 4.37, and 4.20. Groundwater level and submersible pump selection greatly influence the system performance of open loop geothermal heat pumps. It needs to be analysed during the design process of open loop geothermal heat pump system, possibly with analysis tools that include wide range of pump product data.

  • The heating and cooling air conditioning field has been increasing the problems of energy consumption and global warming in the world. A geothermal heat pump has been known as one of the highest efficient heating and cooling system. In this study, the analysis about the test standards of the geothermal heat pump of the Republic of Korea was executed. From the research, the following results were given. It is needed to address the domestic test standard for direct heat exchange geothermal heat pump. Water to air multi geothermal heat pump test standard was only developed in Korea. The test standard to calculate a seasonal energy efficiency ratio for cooling period and heat seasonal performance factor for heating period should be newly developed to estimate actual annual energy consumption and $CO_2$ emission.

  • Geothermal energy is the heat contained in the earth and its internal fluids. Geothermal energy is stored as sensible or latent heat. Supplied by both internal and external sources, it represents a vast supply which is only started to be tapped for generation of electric power. In general, this is natural dry or wet medium to high enthalpy steam at temperatures above $150^{\circ}C$. For some time, binary systems employing substances with a lower boiling point than water in a secondary circuit have been used to generate vapor for driving turbines at a lower temperature level. The utilization of binary plants and the possibility of production from enhanced geothermal systems can expand its availability on a worldwide basis. The geothermal electricity installed capacity is approaching the 10,000GW threshold. Geothermal energy is not present everywhere, but its baseload capability is a very important factor for its success.

  • The purpose of this study is on the performance evaluation of horizontally installed GHEX(Geothermal Heat Exchanger, HGHEX) which has been operated for 5 years successfully. Followings are the results. Firstly, in summer season, on Aug. 2000, $33^{\circ}C$ water was flowing out from HGHEX with continuous operating method, and $27{\sim}29^{\circ}C$ with interval operating method on Jul. 2005. But $2.5{\sim}3.0^{\circ}C$ temperature differences are gained from HGHEX. Secondly, in winter season, on Nov. 2000, $25^{\circ}C$ water was flowing out from HGHEX with continuous operating method, and $13{\sim}15^{\circ}C$ with interval operating method on Jan. 2006. But with each operating method, only $0.1^{\circ}C$ and $0.7^{\circ}C$ temperature differences are gained from HGHEX respectively. As the conclusion of this study, at the point of continuos operating method, seasonal balance of heating and cooling loads, and at the point of interval operating method, balance for geothermal restoring time respectively must be considered for better system performances.

  • This experiment is significant because we can provide information by measuring effect of energy saving for whom plan to install a geothermal heat & cooling system. The result shows geothemal system can save about 50% of energy(heating : 35%, cooling : 60%) and we verified that when using curtain can help saving 4~12% of energy additionally.
