A magnetotelluric (MT) survey has been performed to delineate deeply extended fracture systems at the geothermal field in Seokmo Island, Korea. To assist interpretation of the MT data, geological surveying and well logging of existing wells were also performed. The surface geology of the island shows Cretaceous and Jurassic granite in the north and Precambrian schist in the south. The geothermal regime has been found along the boundary between the schist and Cretaceous granite. Because of the deep circulation along the fracture system, geothermal gradient of the target area exceeds $45^{\circ}C/km$, which is much higher than the average geothermal gradient in Korea. 2D and 3D inversions of MT data clearly showed a very conductive anomaly, which is interpreted as a fracture system bearing saline water that extends at least down to 1.5 km depth and is inclined eastwards. After drilling down to the depth of 1280 m, more than 4000 tons/day of geothermal water overflowed with temperature higher than $70^{\circ}C$. This water showed very similar chemical composition and temperature to those from another existing well, so that they can be considered to have the same origin; i.e. from the same fracture system. A new geothermal project for combined heat and power generation was launched in 2009 in Seokmo Island, based on the survey. Additional geophysical investigations including MT surveys to cover a wider area, seismic reflection surveys, borehole surveys, and well logging of more than 20 existing boreholes will be conducted.
KIGAM (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources) launched a new project to develop the low-enthalpy geothermal water in the area showing high geothermal anomaly, north of Pohang city, for large-scale space heating from KORP (Korea Research Council of Public Science & Technology) funding. Surface geologic and geophysical surveys including Landsat TM image analysis, gravity, magnetic, Magnetotelluric (MT) and controlled-source audio-frequency MT (CSAMT) and self-potential (SP) methods have been conducted and the possible fracture zone was found that would serve as deeply connected geothermal water conduit. By the end of 2003, two test wells of 1 km depth will be drilled and various kinds of borehole survey along with additional MT measurements and sample analysis will follow and then the detailed subsurface condition is to be characterized. Next step would be drilling the production well of 2 km depth and all further steps remain to be determined depending upon the results of the test well studies.

To delineate geothermal water movement at the Pohang geothermal development site, Self-Potential (SP) survey and monitoring were carried out during pumping tests. Before drilling, background SP data have been gathered to figure out overall potential distribution of the site. The pumping test was performed in two separate periods: 24 hours in December 2003 and 72 hours in March 2004. SP monitoring started several days before the pumping tests with a 128-channel automatic recording system. The background SP survey showed a clear positive anomaly at the northern part of the boreholes, which may be interpreted as an up-flow Bone of the deep geothermal water due to electrokinetic potential generated by hydrothermal circulation. The first and second SP monitoring during the pumping tests performed to figure out the fluid flow in the geothermal reservoir but it was not easy to see clear variations of SP due to pumping and pumping stop. Since the area is covered by some 360 m-thick tertiary sediments with very low electrical resistivity (less than 10 ohm-m), the electrokinetic potential due to deep groundwater flow resulted in being seriously attenuated on the surface. However, when we compared the variation of SP with that of groundwater level and temperature of pumping water, we could identify some areas responsible to the pumping. Dominant SP changes are observed in the south-west part of the boreholes during both the preliminary and long-term pumping periods, where 3-D magnetotelluric survey showed low-resistivity anomaly at the depth of $600m\~1,000m$. Overall analysis suggests that there exist hydraulic connection through the southwestern part to the pumping well.
Two-dimensional (2-D) inversion of magnetotelluric (MT) data for two survey lines having south-north direction from Jeju Island has been carried out. Broad band MT sounding curves with good quality could be gathered by performing audio-frequency magnetotelluric (AMT) survey during the MT survey and by operating the remote reference in Kyushu Island, Japan. Comparison of the 2-D inversion model using MT band only and that using both AMT and MT bands for the field data as well as for the data from numerical 2-D modeling said that high frequency information from AMT survey can be useful for interpreting not only the shallow part but also the deep structures, especially when the formation is resistive. The 2-D inversion models of field data show a thick layer having around 10 ohm-m in the depth of a few hundred meters throughout the survey area, which can be considered as the unconsolidated sedimentary layer. And they also show a conductive anomaly at the central part of each survey lines. It can be either the effect of the surrounding sea water, or the structures due to ancient volcanic events. But unfortunately by now, we do not have any further information about the anomaly.

If water flows through a narrow passage into a medium that keeps the equilibrium of temperature, it causes small temperature difference and makes a temperature anomaly. The seepage or leakage often observed at old dams is a representative example of bringing about a temperature anomaly. Therefore, temperature measurements have been regarded as one of excellent methods that can detect the situation of seepage or leakage. However, because existing temperature measurement methods are based on a single sensor, the application of the method to the whole structure is nearly not possible in technical and economical phases. This paper introduces a temperature monitoring system using a thermal sensor cable that is comprised of addressable thermal sensors connected in parallel at many positions within a single cable. Through various laboratory and field experiments, it has been proved that the temperature monitoring technique can give an useful information about permeability of a medium or connectivity of fractures which have been regarded as difficult problems.
Here we discuss a geochemical characterisitc of rare earth element (REE) pattern of a Precambrain leucogranitic gneiss at Imweon, Gangwon Province, Korea. The outcrop includes biotite gneiss xenolith. The leucocratic granite gneiss contacting with biotite gneiss is pegmatitic. However, there is no evidence of contact metamorphism between biotite gneiss and leucocratic-pegmatitic granite gneiss. The leucocratic granite gneiss shows a specific phenomenon of M-type (convex curved) tetrad effect in chondrite-normalized REE patterns with large negative Eu anomaly. The degree of REE tetrad effect in the leucocratic-pegmatitic granitec gneiss is weak and shows partly W-type (concave curved) tetrad effect. The Eu anomaly of leucocratic granite gneiss has close relationship with the degree of tetrad effect as well as Ca/Sr ratio. Our results suggest that the REE tetrad effect from the leucocratic granite gneiss should be formed during differentiation process of granitic magma. We also confirmed that the weathering might affect Eu or Ce anomaly rather than the formation of REE tetrad effect in granitic rock.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the geothermal anomaly based on the relationship between heat flow values and geologic settings in South Korea. For this, a total of 247 heat flow data was constructed to spatial database and the spatial database was overlaid with 1 : 1,000,000-scale digital geologic map using GIS. As the result, the average of heat flow is 64$\pm$14mW$m^{-2}$in South Korea. In the lithological aspect, the area of sedimentary rock shows high heat flow of 74mW$m^{-2}$, sedimentary/volcanic rock area 62mW$m^{-2}$, plutonic rock area 63mW$m^{-2}$ and metamorphic rock area 61mW$m^{-2}$. In the geologic time sequence, the Cenozoic strata has 91mW$m^{-2}$, the Mesozoic and Paleozoic strata 65mW$m^{-2}$, the Proterozoic strata 55mW$m^{-2}$ and the Archean strata 61mW$m^{-2}$.
A geochemical technique based on rare earth element geochemistry was used to clarity the source of the Asian dust (Yellow sand) in the Daejeon area. The Asian dusts were collected 4 times during 31th March- 2nd April and 25th May-27th May 2007. The Yellow sand shows PAAS (Post Archean Australian Shale)-normalized REE pattern of the flattened LREE and slightly depleted LREE without Eu anomaly, whereas the Daejeon soil has slightly enriched LREE and depleted HREE with negative Eu anomaly. Our results show that REE patterns of the Asian dust are LREE-flattened similar to those of the sediment from the south-eastern part of Ordos desert. This suggests that Asian dust in the Daejeon area might be derived from the south-eastern part of Ordos desert.
Hot Spring Law of Taiwan was passed in legislative assembly on 3 June 2003. Hot springs would become one of the most important natural resources for recreation purposes. Both public and private sectors will invest large amount of capital in this area in the near future. The value of remote sensing technology is to give a critical tool for observing the landscape to find out mega-scaled geological structures, which may not be able to be found by conventional approaches. The occurrences of the hot springs in Taiwan are mostly in metamorphic and sedimentary rocks , other than in volcanic environments. Local geothermal anomaly or heat of springs transfer by liquid convection other than conduction or radiation. The deeply -seated fractures of hard rocks are the conduit of the convection of hot water, which could be as deep as 3000 meters in a hypothetical model of Taiwan. Clues to find outcrops of hot spring can be obtained by a structure-controlled model deduced by geological lineaments observed by satellite images and stereoscopic interpretation of aerial photographs. A case study conducted in Eastern Taiwan will be demonstrated.
Satellite magnetic observations reflect the magnetic properties of deep crust about the depth of Curie isotherm that is a boundary where the magnetic nature of the rocks is disappeared, showing long wavelength anomalies that are not easily detected in near-surface data from airborne and shipborne surveys. For this reason, they are important not only in the analyses on such as plate reconstruction of tectonic boundaries and deep crustal structures, but in the studies of geothermal distribution in Antarctic and Greenland crust, related to global warming issue. It is a conventional method to compute the spherical harmonic coefficients from global coverage of satellite magnetic observations but it should be noted that inclusion of erroneous data from the equator and the poles where magnetic observations are highly disturbed might mislead the global model of the coefficients. Otherwise, the reduced anomaly model can be obtained with less corruption by choosing the area of interest with proper data processing to the area. In this study, I produced a satellite crustal magnetic anomaly map over East Asia (20° ~ 55°N, 108° ~ 150°E) centered on Korean Peninsula, from CHAMP satellite magnetic measurements about mean altitude of 280 km during the last year of the mission, and compared with the one from global crustal magnetic model (MF7). Also, a comparison was made with long wavelength anomalies from EMAG2 model compiled from all near-surface data over the globe.
