Geosynthetic damage has attracted a major attention since the introduction of geotextiles for civil construction applications. Geotextile is one of the most useful and effective polymer material in civil construction works and the main function of geotextile is separation, reinforcement, filtering and drainage. Recently, because of the shortage of natural rock, traditional forms of river and coastal structures have become very expensive to build and maintain. This study tries to suggest the method of estimating valid stitching rate and the methodology of sea dyke construction over soft soils for more reasonable application of geotextile mat by studying tensile strength, bursting strength, punching strength, tear strength that are considered when analyzing and designing geotextile mat of a field.
Load tests for ten small-scale foundation models combined with geotextile and sand mat were conducted to study the effect of geotextile, sand mat, and foundation types on deformation of foundation soils. In addition, the experimental results were compared with those obtained from numerical analysis using a software program. The main conclusions were summarized as follows : 1. The restraint effect on GIT is more outstanding on the lateral displacement than on the vertical one. 2. The only use of SIM has better effect for the restraint of lateral displacement than vertical ogle. 3. The use of both SIM and GIT are required for the restraint of lateral and vertical displacement.
Reinforcement with geotextiles have been used in the foundation soil to enhance the resistance of embankments to avoid failure through excessive deformation or shear in the foundation. It is improtant to know the amount of the strain and the displacement of buried geotextiles for the verification of the reinforcement behaviour. Full scale trial constructions were performed to check the deformational characteristics of the polyester(PET) mat which was used for the embankment reinforcement. Many instrumentation equipments including surface settlement plates, profile gauges and inclinometer casings were installed to observe the behaviour of the soft ground due to the soil embankment. 60 electrical resistance strain gauges and 9 vibrating wire LVDTs were installed 세 measure the deformation of the polyester mat. Results of various tests and geotextile, waterproofing and protection from the hazard environments were introduced. The proposed instrumentation method was effective for the monitoring or the geotextile behaviour. The direct attachment of electrical resistance strain gauges on the gertextile mat was able to measure small changes of the strain of geotextiles. At the end of the 5 month monitoring, 54 of 60 (93%) strain gauges and 7 of 9 (78%) displacement transducers survived all perils of the compaction impacts and the humidity. And the tensile strain of grotextiles increased as the ground displacement became larger. Though the observed strain of mats under the 3m high embankment load was less than 1%, the magnitudes of the strain according to the mat spreading method were different from each other.

Ths paper was aimed to investigate the effect of reinforcement for the deformation characteristics of clayey foundation. Among numerous improvement method of foundation, only geotextil-reinforced foundation and foundation with both geotextile and sand mat which were 2-dimensional model clayey foundations were selected for load test in order to obtain fundamental results in analizing the behavior of the foundation with geotextile. To scrutinize the behavior characteristics and effect of reinforcement, the model foundations were constructed with various conditions on the location of layout of geotextile, the number of layouts and the depth of sand mat As for the technique of the numerical analysis elasto-plastic constitutive model for clayey soil, beam element for geotextile and elastic model for sand were respectively employed. Interface element was introduced for the block between materials with different rigidity. Observed values and numerical results were compared with satisfactory correspondence, which proved that the numercial technique developed in this paper was available.
In the west coast, south coast, and river basin, the use of geotextile mats has been increasing to improve the soft ground for making industrial facilities space and farmland. As an initial step to improve the vast and soft ground, the geotextile mats are laid and bonded to increase the bearing capacity of the wide ground for supporting construction equipment. Seam strength of geotextile mats exert a force only about 50% of the tensile strength of the fabric, which causes problems such as uplift and sinking in the soft ground. In this study, various types of geosynthetic matting techniques were investigated and the tensile strength of each method was compared and analyzed. Numerical analysis shows that stress increment in the ground due to the overburden load decreases when the seam strength of the geosynthetics mats is increased. When the seam strength was increased to 60, 70 and 80%, the bearing capacity of ground by geotextile mat was increased.
Excessive earth pressure is one of the major mechanical factors in the deformation and damage of Cut-and-Cover Tunnel lining in shallow tunnels and portals of mountain tunnels (Kim, 2000). Excessive earth pressure may be attributed to insufficient compaction and consolidation of backfill material due to self-weight, precipitation and vibration caused by traffic (Komiya et al., 2000; Taylor et al., 1984; Yoo, 1997). Even though there were a lot of tests performed to determine the earth pressure acting on the tunnel lining, unfortunately there were almost no case histories of studies performed to determine remedial measures that reduce differential settlement and excessive earth pressure. In this study the installation of geotextile mat was selected to reduce the differential settlement and excessive earth pressure acting on the cut-and-cover tunnel lining. In order to determine settlement and earth pressure reduction effect (reinforcement effect) of geotextile mat reinforcement, laboratory tunnel model tests were performed. This study was limited to the modeling of rigid circular cut-and-cover tunnel constructed at a depth of $1.0D\sim1.5D$ in loose sandy ground and subjected to a vibration frequency of 100 Hz. Model tests with varying soil cover, mat reinforcement scheme and slope roughness were performed to determine the most effective mat reinforcement scheme. Slope roughness was adjusted by attaching sandpaper #100, #400 and acetate on the cut slope surface. Mat reinforcement effect of each mat reinforcement scheme were presented by the comparison of earth pressure obtained from the unreinforced and mat reinforced model tests. Soil settlement reduction was analyzed and presented using the Picture Analysis Method (Park, 2003).
With the increasing use of geotextile mats in dredging and reclaiming work and coastal construction, the assessment of bearing capacity in soft ground has become an important evaluation index for negligent accidents. The review of the allowable bearing capacity of soft ground consisting of inhomogeneous layers by laying geotextile mats and sand mat layers for soft ground improvement is generally compared with the equation of Meyerhof (1974) and Yamanouchi (1985). Mayerhof formula results in economic loss due to underestimation of bearing capacity, and Yamanouchi (1985) formula does not take into account negligent accidents for punching shear failure, so rather high bearing capacity is evaluated. It is considered that economic feasibility and stability will be ensured by proposing a modified formula to calculate the appropriate bearing capacity by applying the seam tensile strength of the geotextile mat to the design standard of soft ground improvement.

Load tests for fourteen small-scale foundation models combined with geotextile, sand mat and rigid mat were conducted to study the effect of geotextile(G/T), sand mat(S/M), and foundation types on deformation of foundation soils. In addition, the experimental results were compared with those obtained from numerical analysis using a software program. The main conclusions were summarized as follows: 1. The restraint effect on G/T is more outstanding on the lateral displacement than on the vertical one. 2. The single use of S/M has better effect on the restraint of vertical displacement than lateral one. 3. The use of both S/M and G/T is required for the restraint of lateral and vertical displacement. 4. Multi-layered foundation with large rigidity shows similar tendency to that of foundation reinforced with S/M and G/T.

The purpose of this study is to enhance durability of solidifying mat. solidifying mat excellent mechanical properties of geotextile. multi-layer coating system is applied to the mat and the chloride ions penetration resistance, chemical resistance, accelerated carbonation test were evaluated by testing the durability. Durability test results are as follows. chloride ions penetration resistance results are coated mat is approximately 70 % lower than plain. chemical resistance test results are coated mat no discoloration. accelerated carbonation test results are coated mat is approximately 90 % lower than the plain.
Natural fiber mat made with compressed coconut mat and jute filter is in the spotlight recently as an alternative material for sand mat, which is getting expensive in Korea. Tensile strength and permeability tests for the natural fiber mat were carried out to evaluate for its practical use in this study. Despite of very low tensile strength of coconut mat, that of jute filter was satisfied with conventional criteria of geotextile suggested by Christopher and Holtz(1985). Besides, permeability of fiber mat under high compressive pressure was greater than that of conventional sand material used as sand mat. It was found that the fiber mat has a great potential in substituting the conventional sand material.
