  • In this study, pullout tests were carried out to evaluate pullout characteristics of waste fishing net (WFN), which added into bottom ash for recycling both bottom ash and WFN. Three different mesh size of WFN (WFN20:$20mm{\times}20mm$, WFN30:$30mm{\times}30mm$, WFN40:$40mm{\times}40mm$) and geogrid were added as a reinforcement. Pullout characteristics of waste fishing net were compared with those of the geogrid. Pullout test results showed that pullout strength and stiffness of WFN20 are a little less than those of geogrid. However, the pullout friction angle of WFN20 is similar to that of geogrid due to bearing resistance induced from transverse rib because thickness of WFN20 is greater than geogrid. Pullout test results also indicated that distribution of residual strain along reinforcement after test depends on overburden stress. Residual strain at the tip of reinforcement increased with an increase in overburden stress due to concentration of pullout force on the tip of reinforcement.

  • The number of construction of roads and railroads in soft ground such as coastal areas and wetlands is getting increased. For this reason cases that soft ground improvement is applied are increasing. In general, many ground improvement methods consider only the working conditions at the time or only economy. But if the working condition and economy are taken into consideration together, the number of applicable construction method gets limited. In such a case, a ground improvement method using both the surface layer portion and the deep layer portion is applied. But the basic research on this is still insufficient in practice. Therefore, in this study the reinforcement effect of geogrid was investigated by carrying out the model test realizing the case in which soft surface ground improvement and depth improvement are simultaneously applied. And it was intened to understand the effect of the thickness of surface layer, the diameter and length of the improvement body on the reinforcement effect of geogrid. The result showed that the effect of the surface layer thickness is greater than the effect of the deep layer diameter. Moreover, when the surface layer is reinforced with a geogrid, the strength of the surface layer part is enhanced and this effect of a geogrid reinforcement caused the reduction of surface settlement.

  • This study, as basic research which was intended to develope the surface reinforcement method using reinforcement material which is applicable to very soft ground in Korea, was aimed at proposing the design parameter for the surface ground improvement method. To that end, a wide width tensile test using geotextile, geogrid and steel bar (substitute for bamboo) and 21 kinds of the laboratory model tests with the end restraint conditions of the reinforcement that comprises the constrained and partially constrained (3 types) conditions were conducted. Moreover, a new procedure was proposed to take into account the effect of the stiffness of Reinforce materials on bearing capacity theory of Surface Reinforcement Method for Soft Ground.

  • The most important part in the earth reinforcement is the interface between soil and the reinforcement. Shear strength and shear behavior in this interface make a great role relating to the reinforcement effect. This paper presents 2 kinds of direct shear test methods. one is the strain free shear test, called 'free method', that is performed by the free condition of allowing tensile strain. The other is the strain fix shear test, called 'fixed method', that is performed by the fixed condition of not allowing tensile strain. Two reinforcements were used such as nonwoven geotextile and geogrid. That is, interfaces are composed of geogrid/sand and geotextile/sand. From the test results it shows us that the fixed method had a greater friction angle and a smaller peak shear strain than those of the free method. Residual stress of the fixed method was bigger than that of the free method but the residual stress ratio was vice versa.

  • This paper describes reinforcement method of reinforced earth wall near the abutment. The excessive displacement of a case affected by reduction of bearing capacity due to macro-environment condition like a coast. That is, the front displacement of reinforced earth wall has been happening continuously due to strength reduction of foundation ground. The micro pile is applied to reinforcement method, in order to secure a bearing capacity and global slope stability of reinforced earth wall. The results of numerical analysis confirmed that reinforcement method based on micro pile can secure a stability of structure, while the reconstruction of reinforced earth wall is impossible by construction and macro-environment condition.

  • In this study, a series of accelerated creep tests (SIM) was carried out on geosynthetic strip reinforcements with folding grooves having different tensile strengths (15 kN, 25 kN, 35 kN, 50 kN, 70 kN, and 90 kN) to analyze creep characteristics and to assess creep reduction factors. In particular, long-term creep tests were conducted on geosynthetic strip reinforcements with 25 kN tensile strength, which is widely used, to compare and analyze the accelerated creep test results. As a result, the creep reduction factor increased with an increasing design life of reinforcement. In addition, geosynthetic strip reinforcement using the same material and manufacturing method showed similar creep reduction factors at the same design life for different tensile strengths. When both long-term and accelerated creep test data were used, the creep reduction factors from the accelerated test were estimated to be 5.9%~7.1% less than those from the long-term creep test for the design life ranging from 50 to 100 years.

  • This paper introduces a recently developed reinforced earth wall system with steel framed-facing. The new system incorporates a steel-framed facing that might be assembled on-site and steel strip or geogrid type reinforcements for backfill area. In order to enhance scenery view design of the wall construction, dual-structured facing is proposed in which room for planting space locates in the front of facing. A reinforced earth walls using the proposed system was constructed to verify constructability of the proposed system and facing movement and tensile characteristics of reinforcement were measured to understand the mechanical behavior.

  • Since 1980's in U.S.A and Japan, the studies on increasing the bearing capacity of railway roadbed using geocell system have been conducted for repair and reinforcement of railways constructed on soft soils. In this study, the railway roadbed reinforced with geocell system, used for repair and reinforcement of existing railways in Korea, has been analyzed and investigated the results of the previous studies conducted in Korea and other nations. And the method for estimating the railway roadbed thickness was developed based on the equivalent method using the multi-layer theory and the deformation modulus Ev.

  • This study carried out several laboratory tests such as water tank settlement test and two-dimensional water flow test to investigate settlement and scour characteristics of a square-shaped hybrid reef which was reinforced with geogrid. In addition, numerical analysis was also performed to find out scour characteristics of the square-shaped hybrid reef with different placement types (type A; straight placement type, type B; zigzag placement type). Laboratory test results indicated that settlement and scouring depth significantly reduced in hybrid reefs reinforced with geogrid, compared with those without reinforcement. Two-dimentional water flow tests and numerical test results also showed that scouring depth and flow velocity of placement type A more decreased than those of type B.

  • The asphalt concrete pavement takes various advantages of better riding quality, serviceability and easier maintenance. At the same time, it addresses a weak point of the premature failures due to rapid increasement of traffic volume, heavy vehicles and high temperature in summer. It increases the expenditure of maintenance and repair. In order to improve the performance of asphalt pavement avoiding this premature failure, the use reinforcements with geosynthetics have been considered. Geosynthetics are known as an effective reinforcement to restrain fatigue and reflective cracks in asphalt pavements. In this study, a comprehensive parametric study is conducted to capture the efficiency of geosynthetic-reinforcements using viscoelastic properties of the asphalt concrete(AC) layer. The investigated parameters were reinforcement location, AC layer thickness, temperature distribution across the AC layer and modulus of AC and base layer. As a result of observations, that reinforced asphalt concrete could be used effectively for improving resistance against fatigue cracks and permanent deformation. Especially, when a geogrid was placed at the interface between the asphaltic base and the subbase, tensile stress in the horizontal direction was significantly reduced.
