  • Phenalamides $A_1{\sim}A_3$ were reisolated as cytotoxic substances from culture broth of Myxococcus stipitatus JW111. The producing strain was isolated from the marine sediment collected off the shore of Geomun Island, Korea. The active principles were extracted from cell mass with acetone and successively purified by silica gel column chromatography, Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography, and finally recycling prep. HPLC. These compounds demonstrated significant cytotoxicity against certain human cancer cells, having $IC_50$ values ranging from 0.23 to 0.50 ${\mu}g/ml$. Moreover, they also inhibited the growth of adriamycin-resistant HCT/ADM human cancer cell line as well as its parent sensitive cell line.

  • Prunus glandulosa Thunb. [=Cerasus glandulosa (Thunb.) Sokolov] (Rosaceae) is native to the warmtemperate region of China (Anhui, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hebei, Henan, Jiangsu, Shaanxi, Shandong, Sichuan, Yunnan, and Zhejiang Provinces). It is naturalized in the United States (i.e. Alabama, Michigan and North Carolina) and Canada (Ontario). This species, previously only recorded as introduced or cultivated plants on the Korean Peninsula, was confirmed to be naturally distributed in the southwestern coast islands(i.e. Geomun-do, Chuja-do and an uninhabited island in Shinan-gun of Jeollanam-do). Prunus glandulosa Thunb. is distinguished from a related taxon P. japonica var. nakaii (H. Lév.) Rehder by pedicel 8-12 (-16) mm long, linear stipules, glabrous style, and pink petals. The morphological characters and illustration of P. glandulosa Thunb. are provided with line drawings and photographs from the natural habitat. In addition, it is likely that a new habitat will be found by plant biodiversity investigations through the southwestern coast islands. Further research is needed to determine its population size, distribution, and threats, as well as identify appropriate locations for conservation collection of germplasm.

  • A pre-feasibility test is done for renewable energy hybrid power systems at off~grid islands in which the current power supply is provided only by diesel generation. We apply Homer (Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewables) which was developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) for the analysis to identify the cost-minimizing combination of power generating facilities for the given load profiles. Chuja-Do, Geomun-Do and Youngsan-Do have been selected for our analysis considering the wind resources data of the Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER). Information on wind speed, solar radiation and temperature is also used for the analysis. System component cost information from overseas market has been used due to the lack of domestic information. Site specific Load profile for electricity demand for those islands are reconstructed based on the partial survey results obtained form other sources. The LCOE of the least cost hybrid power systems for Chuja-Do, Geomun-Do and Youngsan-Do are $0.278/kWh, $0.234/kWh and $0.353/kWh, respectively Considering the fact that diesel generation is being subsidized at the price of $0.300/kWh by the government, first 2 cases are economically feasible for the introduction of renewable energy hybrid systems to those islands. But the third case of Youngsan-Do does not meet the criteria. The basic differences of these pre-feasibility test results are from the differences of the site specific renewable energy conditions, especially wind resources. In summary, promoting hybrid systems in the off-grid remote island should be based on the economic feasibility test results. Not all the off-grid islands are feasible for introducing this renewable energy hybrid system.

  • The recent trend is that diesel power generation on islands where its prime cost for power generation is high is replaced by new and renewable energy. Therefore, south Jeolla province is progressing the construction project of self-sufficient islands for the areas where power is supplied by depending on diesel generators, which is the project that power is supplied through eco-friendly energy source using sunlight, wind power and energy storage device etc. However, it is difficult to construct new and renewable energy source with the capacity to respond to the load perfectly due to its environmental and geographical conditions regarding capacity design of new and renewable energy. Besides, Microgrid design considering appropriate capacity design of the system components and efficient operation is required through the analysis of climate conditions and load patterns from the design stage for optimal composition of a hybrid system with economic feasibility. Therefore, this study is aimed to conduct a research on optimal combination, capacity calculation and economic feasibility by comprising a hybrid power generation system which will replace 40% of power generation by diesel as new and renewable energy source for Geomun Island where has more than 300 households and requires expansion of the facility among islands located in southwest coast.

  • The aim of this study was to develope a fishing technology for fisheries management for improving the survival rate of young fishes escaped from trawl net. Sea experiments were carried out to investigate the survival rate of the fishes in off Geomun island and Korean southern sea. Cover-net fish cage was designed and manufactured to collect fishes escaped from COD(codend) and TED(trawl escapement device). Fish cage was installed in a shallow site where scuba diver can observe the surviving fishes after separating the cage from trawl net. Most of fishes except horse mackerel(Trachurus japonicus) and mackerel(Scomber japonicus) could escaped through TED(bar space 35mm) easier than COD(mesh size 54mm). Especially, escapement rate of redlip croaker(Pseudosciaena polyactis) escaped from TED was the highest as 73.9%. Survival rate of horse mackerel(Trachurus japonicus) escaped from TED was 85.5% at the point of 96 hours over, while the survival rate for COD showed a rapid decrease according to the time elapse as 85.0% at the point of 24 hours, 76.4% for 48 hours, 62.7% for 72 hours and 56.1% for 96 hours. Over 90% of red seabream(Pagrus major) and rock bream(Oplegnathus fasciatus) escaped from TED were survived 96 hours over and the survival rate of those fishes were excellent compared with the other fish species. All korean pomfret(Pampus echinogaster) escaped from both COD and TED were died within 48 hours. Most of redlip croaker(Pseudosciaena polyactis) were also died within 12 hours because of the weak physiological characteristics by water pressure change. Survival rate of fishes like as horse mackerel(Trachurus japonicus) having hard skin was high while it was low for the fishes like as squid(Todarodes pacificus) and hair-tail(Trichiurus lepturus) having soft skin. We could know that there were big differences in the survival rate offish species escaped from trawl net.

  • This study was conducted in order to investigate the growth and morphological development of Cypselurus hiraii larvae and to obtain basic data for taxonomic research. Specimens for this study were collected using a scoop net (aperture Ø60 cm) at the Geomun Island in Yeosu-si, Jollanam-do in July and August of 2013, and the mean water temperature was $20.6{\pm}1.84^{\circ}C$ and the mean salinity was $32.1{\pm}0.46$‰ during the collection. In post-larvae of total length 9.58~9.69 mm (average $9.63{\pm}0.04mm$, n=5), the mouth was opened, and the maxilla was shorter than the mandible. The length of the dorsal fin did not exceed that of the ventral fin, and the dorsal fin was on the same line as that of the ventral fin. In post-larvae of total length 18.0~18.5 mm (average $18.2{\pm}0.22mm$, n=5), with the growth accelerated, the pectoral fin was developed broadly and their caudal fin was differentiated into the heterocercal tail. These characteristics suggest the development of swimming ability and resultant active feeding activities. In post-larvae of total length 22.4~23.0 mm (average $22.7{\pm}0.21mm$, n=5), striped melanophores deposited in the pectoral fin, and small spot-like melanophores expanded in the processes formed on the mandible. The dorsal and anal fins were on the same line, and the anal fin was situated behind the dorsal fin.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the distribution and variation of the anion and cation number in the aerosols at 16 sites in the Jeju area. The average value of anion counts was raged from 449.35 ions/cm3 at Jeju city to 3471.25 ions/cm3 in the Chunjiyeon falls. In order, the lowest Jeju-si < hamdeok < 1100 m < farm < gyorae A < saryoni < jeolmul < gyorae B < geomunoreum < halla forest < hallasan garden < seongpanak < dongbaeksan < jeongbang < wonyang, respectively. There was statistically significant difference between the anion counts of the measured values in the order of elevation. The mean value of cation measurements was from 90 ions/cm3 for Cheonjiyeon, to 729.8 ions/cm3 for Halla forest garden, which showed the highest value. In order, the lowest 729.8 ions/cm3 of Cheonjiyeon < 1100 m < dongbaeksan < Jeju-si < saryoni < wonyang < seongpanak < hamdeok < jeongbang < gyorae B < jeolmul < Farm < gyorae A < halla forest < geomun and < halla garden, respectively. The geographically low area and the high area were measured low and difference in the two ions. The differences between the content of the anion, cation and/or altitude were significant each other in the variance analysis. The correlation between the anion and cation content and/or altitude was statistically significant (r=.396, p<.001). In conclusion, the result of showing the temporal distribution and variation of the anion and cation content in the aerosols in Jeju island forests provides important information for healthcare.

  • The slime flounder Microstomus achne were caught at Geomun Island, Yosu-si, Jeollanamdo from January to March in 2006. The fertilized eggs were observed for morphological development of egg, embryo and larva. Eggs were colorless transparent, separative pelagic, absent of oil globule, and the diameter was 1.64${\pm}$0.03 mm (n=50). The eggs were hatched at 168 hours 40 minutes after fertilization in the range of $9.8\sim13.0^{\circ}C$ (mean $11.4{\pm}1.6^{\circ}C$). Total length of newly hatched larva was 4.05${\pm}$0.18 mm (n=20). The larva had developed membranous fin showing waterdrop-shaped structure, and their mouth and anus were not open. The myotomes were 14~15+33~34=47~49. The egg yolks were 1.64${\pm}$0.12 mm in major axis, and 1.23${\pm}$0.19 mm in minor axis. At 12 days after hatching, the total length was 7.32${\pm}$0.42 mm(n=20). The egg yolk was completely absorbed and transferred to post larval stage. Star-shaped melanophores and branch-shaped xanthophores in the edge of membranous fin were more densed. Chrysanthemum-shaped melanophores in the notochord were densed and formed 4~5 melanophore bands. At 90~93 days after hatching, morphological features of the larva, 19.91${\pm}$1.63 mm TL(n=20), were transferred to juvenile stage showing similar features with those of the adult fish.
