  • This study was performed to search for the geometrical principles in modern architecture and design based on Frobel's educational idea and Kindergarten system. Especially, it studies on the geometrical principles of Froebel's building gifts and it's types, and then illustrates applied examples in modern architecture and design. As the architectural scope, the architecture and design theory of Frank Lloyd Wright and Bauhaus in early 20th century is analyzed. The conclusions of this study that starts these purpose are as follows. First, Froebel's educational theory is based on principles and rules which are perceived through the observation of nature, and Froebel's Kindergarten system consists of geometrical building gifts and categories of geometrical forms. Second, the characteristics of Froebel's building gifts are mathematical size, proportion, symmetry and the rules of spatial relation. Third, the influence of Froebel's kindergarten system on Bauhaus is that it based on the rational rules of $\bigtriangleup\square\bigcirc$ organized by geometrical basic forms as like Froebel's educational idea. And the influence of Froebel's Kindergarten system on Frank Lloyd Wright is that he used unit system, unity of space and structure and modular system as like the Froebel's building gifts.

  • The creative fashion design is the technique which ran be obtained through the structural analysis of the relationship between principle, element-combination and idea-expression. In the research, as the results of theoretical survey of design structure and idea-expression, the structural and subjective designs are classified and defined: a. the structural design is analyzed with the existing examples based on the combinational Idea-expression of the O.C.L method, and b. the subjective design is also analyzed connecting the real examples to Cordon method, Synetic method, Association method, and expansive idea-expression-method obtained by the Experiences of Geometrical Combinations. The research can be summarized as follows: 1. The creative fashion design which emphasizes the geometrical structure utilizes the modification method whirh combines the shapes and constructs extraordinary structural beauty coming from the complex structural principle, that is, emphasis and balance. 2. The creative fashion design which emphasizes specific subjects utilizes the modification method which mimics representative and plastic resemblances and constructs symbolic structural beauty coming from the simple structural principle, that is, material elements.

  • This study aims to identify Archimedes' idea used while proving proposition 23 in 'Quadrature of the Parabola' and to provide an alternative way for finding the sum of geometric series without applying the concept of limit by extending the idea though metaphor. This metaphorical model is characterized as static and thus can be complimentary to the dynamic aspect of limit concept adopted in Korean high school mathematics textbooks. In addition, middle school students can understand $0.999{\cdots}=1$ with this model in a structural way differently from the operative one suggested in Korean middle school mathematics textbooks. In this respect, I argue that the metaphorical model can be an useful educational tool for Korean secondary students to overcome epistemological obstacles inherent in the concepts of infinity and limit by making it possible to transfer from geometrical context to algebraic context.

  • The purpose of this study is to historically examine the thoughts and ideas of geometry and to analyze the expression style of design applied to the mass communication such as magazines and world wide webs, by giving definitions on the ideas of geometry and the pattern of cognition. Geometry was evolved to Descartes's analytical geometry, projective geometry, non-Euclidean geometry and Topology at the end of 19th century. When geometry applies to design styles, it is devided into two field, plane geometry and solid geometry. The development of geometry was completed from the Pythagoras symbolic theory of number to Platonic spiritual geometry and Euclidean geometry. It can be studied that those have what kind of symbolic meanings and transformations on each hair design plan. It can also analized how those symbolic forms are appeared on the design form. This tendency means that there is always a try for the use of geometry as reasonable device for hair design. If the hair design and geometry have logical and artistical relation, we can make buildings which have a order, balance and harmony.

  • The plastic arts is used when designers draw inspirations to create fashion design. The author referred to fashion magazines for designing ideas of Mondrian's geometrical abstract painting in practical applications used by designers in Paris, Italy, London and New York during the 10-year period(1991-2000). The collections of data were analyzed as following: ◇ Fashion Designing Idea 1. Matching Idea The art is reproduced in the design as how it is with no transformation. First, the painting's complete figure is reproduced on the entire or parts of clothing. Second, the painting's partial figure is reproduced on the entire or parts of clothing. 2. Contrasting Ideas The composition elements in Mondrian's geometrical abstract painting, for example, structures of shapes, vertical and horizontal lines and different colors are applied in the design. First, one particular shape in painting is transformed into different shape of square, circle or triangle and reproduced in designing. Second, one particular shape in painting is disassembled and then reshaped into different form in reproduction. Third, additional lines are put in to create different look from the original painting. Forth, existing lines are extended over the boundary to create different look from the original painting. Fifth, achromatic colors: black and white, and three basic colors: red, blue and yellow in the original painting are modified into different shades or color scheme is increased in broad range.

  • A well-designed mesh shape of the cable net is of essential significance to achieve high performance of cable-network antenna reflectors. This paper is concerned with the mesh design problem for such antenna reflector structure. Two new methods for creating the topological forms of the cable net are first presented. Among those, the cyclosymmetry method is useful to generate different polygon-faceted meshes, while the topological mapping method is suitable for acquiring triangle-faceted meshes with different mesh grid densities. Then, the desired spatial paraboloidal mesh geometrical configuration in the state of static equilibrium is formed by applying a simple mesh generation approach based on the force density method. The main contribution of this study is that a general technical guide for how to create the connectivities between the nodes and members in the cable net is provided from the topological point of view. With the new idea presented in this paper, multitudes of mesh configurations with different net patterns can be sought by a certain rule rather than by empiricism, which consequently gives a valuable technical reference for the mesh design of this type of cable-network structures in the engineering.

  • Jean-Charles de Castelbajac is gaining worldwide recognition as a designer who is not conscious of fashion and meet the desire of times. Castelbajac's works can be devided into three periods. 1. Creative challenge period. (1968~78) - His works started from creative challenge against haute-couture attract with practical design and extraordinary textile use. 2. Artistic development period. (1979~88) - He made unique ideas with the four primary colors affected by modern formative art. Pop-art clothes using cartoon or graffito were highlighted. 3. Aesthetic maturity period. (1989-now) - He received chevalier of Arts and the Letters at 1989. He was acquainted with other many designers in the world at 1990s, and his works came to mature. The aesthetic qualities in Castelbajac's works can be identified with the following themes. 1. Geometrical simplicity - Geometrical form without decoration and unnecessary lines used for the most comfortable cloth to wear and act gives an impression of explicitness and intelligence. 2. Humorous decoration - An unique idea having wit and humor shows his philosophy that must be new, vital and delightful. 3. Parody presentation - Pictures or people are reorganized 9Y work philosophy, then that get satirical and comic effects. 4. Pop-art image - Using mass communication media like a cartoon, figures, flag, graffiti, it produces clear and bright image.
