Spatial Compounding of Ultrasonic Diagnostic Images for Rotating Linear Probe with Geometric Parameter Error Compensation

  • In ultrasonic medical imaging, spatial compounding of images is a technique where ultrasonic beam is steered to examine patient tissues in multiple angles. In the conventional ultrasonic diagnostic imaging, the steering of the ultrasonic beam is achieved electronically using the phased array transducer elements. In this paper, a spatial compounding approach is presented where the ultrasonic probe element is rotated mechanically and the beam steering is achieved mechanically. In the spatial compounding, target position is computed using the value of the rotation axis and the transducer array angular position. However, in the process of the rotation mechanism construction and the control system there arises the inevitable uncertainties in these values. These geometric parameter errors result in the target position error, and the consequence is a blurry compounded image. In order to reduce these target position errors, we present a spatial compounding scheme where error correcting transformation matrices are computed and applied to the raw images before spatial compounding to reduce the blurriness in the compounded image. The proposed scheme is illustrated using phantom and live scan images of human knee, and it is shown that the blurriness is effectively reduced.

Geolocation Error Analysis of KOMPSAT-5 SAR Imagery Using Monte-Carlo Simulation Method

  • Geolocation accuracy is one of the important factors in utilizing all weather available SAR satellite imagery. In this study, an error budget analysis was performed on key variables affecting on geolocation accuracy by generating KOMPSAT-5 simulation data. To perform the analysis, a Range-Doppler model was applied as a geometric model of the SAR imagery. The results show that the geolocation errors in satellite position and velocity are linearly related to the biases in the azimuth and range direction. With 0.03cm/s satellite velocity biases, the simulated errors were up to 0.054 pixels and 0.0047 pixels in the azimuth and range direction, and it implies that the geolocation accuracy is sensitive in the azimuth direction. Moreover, while the clock drift causes a geolocation error in the azimuth direction, a signal delay causes in the range direction. Monte-Carlo simulation analysis was performed to analyze the influence of multiple geometric error sources, and the simulated error was up to 3.02 pixels in the azimuth direction.

  • For comparing more than two images, the precise geometric corrections should be preceded because it necessary to eliminate systematic errors due to basic sensor information difference and non-systematic errors due to topographical undulations. In this study, we did sensor modeling using satellite sensor information to make a basic map of change detection for artificial topography. We eliminated the systematic errors which can be occurred in photographing conditions using GCP and DEM data. The Kompsat EOC images relief could be reduced by precise rectification method. Classifying images which was used for change detections by city and forest zone, the accuracy of the matching results are increased by 10% and the positioning accuracies also increased.

  • One of the major limitations of productivity and quality in metal cutting is the machining accuracy of machine tools. The machining accuracy is affected by geometric and thermal errors of the machine tools. In this study, the compensation device is manufactured in order to compensate thermal error of machine tools under the real-time. This paper models of the thermal errors for error analysis and develops on-the-machine measurement system by which the volumetric error are measured and compensated. The thermal error is modeled by means of angularity errors of a column and thermal drift error of the spindle unit which are measured by the touch probe unit with a star type styluses, a designed spherical ball artifact, and five gap sensors. In order to compensate thermal characteristics under several operating conditions, experiments performed with five gap sensors and manufactured compensation device on the horizontal machining center.

  • Geometry based CAD/CAM system is hard to achieve "net shape machining" For a net shape machining, the machining errors should be compensated by off-line CAD/CAM system followed by on-line control system. In this paper, we investigate an off-line compensation scheme for the machining errors due to tool deflection in contouring operation. The significance of the deflection errors is first shown, and a compensation is sought via modifying the nominal tool path. In modification, tool deflection amount is iteratively compensated until the deflection amount is iteratively compensated until the deflected path results in the desired contour within a tolerance. The path modification algorithm has been tested via computer simulation. The developed algorithm can be used as a postprocessor for the current CAD/CAM system based on geometric modeling as a means for enhancing the machining accuracy.

  • In order to reduce the trial-and-errors in design and production of injection molded plastic parts, there has been much research effort not only on CAE systems which simulate the injection molding process, but also on CAD systems which support initial design and re-design of plastic parts and their molds. The CAD systems and CAE systems have been developed independently with being built on different basis. That is, CAD systems manipulate the part shapes and the design features in a complete solid model, while CAE systems work on shell meshes generated on the abstract sheet model or medial surface of the part. Therefore, it is required to support the two types of geometric models and feature information in one environment to integrate CAD and CAE systems for accelerating the design speed. A feature-based non-manifold geometric modeling system has been developed to provide an integrated environment for design and analysis of injection molding products. In this system, the geometric models for CAD and CAE systems are represented by a non-manifold boundary representation and they are merged into a single geometric model. The suitable form of geometric model for any application can be extracted from this model. In addition, the feature deletion and interaction problem of the feature-based design system has been solved clearly by introducing the non-manifold Boolean operation based on 'merge and selection' algorithm. The sheet modeling capabilities were also developed for easy modeling of thin plastic parts.

Geometric Regualrization of Irregular Building Polygons: A Comparative Study

  • 3D buildings are the most prominent feature comprising urban scene. A few of mega-cities in the globe are virtually reconstructed in photo-realistic 3D models, which becomes accessible by the public through the state-of-the-art online mapping services. A lot of research efforts have been made to develop automatic reconstruction technique of large-scale 3D building models from remotely sensed data. However, existing methods still produce irregular building polygons due to errors induced partly by uncalibrated sensor system, scene complexity and partly inappropriate sensor resolution to observed object scales. Thus, a geometric regularization technique is urgently required to rectify such irregular building polygons that are quickly captured from low sensory data. This paper aims to develop a new method for regularizing noise building outlines extracted from airborne LiDAR data, and to evaluate its performance in comparison with existing methods. These include Douglas-Peucker's polyline simplication, total least-squared adjustment, model hypothesis-verification, and rule-based rectification. Based on Minimum Description Length (MDL) principal, a new objective function, Geometric Minimum Description Length (GMDL), to regularize geometric noises is introduced to enhance the repetition of identical line directionality, regular angle transition and to minimize the number of vertices used. After generating hypothetical regularized models, a global optimum of the geometric regularity is achieved by verifying the entire solution space. A comparative evaluation of the proposed geometric regulator is conducted using both simulated and real building vectors with various levels of noise. The results show that the GMDL outperforms the selected existing algorithms at the most of noise levels.

Comparison of Composite Methods of Satellite Chlorophyll-a Concentration Data in the East Sea

  • To produce a level-3 monthly composite image from daily level-2 Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) chlorophyll-a concentration data set in the East Sea, we applied four average methods such as the simple average method, the geometric mean method, the maximum likelihood average method, and the weighted averaging method. Prior to performing each averaging method, we classified all pixels into normal pixels and abnormal speckles with anomalously high chlorophyll-a concentrations to eliminate speckles from the following procedure for composite methods. As a result, all composite maps did not contain the erratic effect of speckles. The geometric mean method tended to underestimate chlorophyll-a concentration values all the time as compared with other methods. The weighted averaging method was quite similar to the simple average method, however, it had a tendency to be overestimated at high-value range of chlorophyll-a concentration. Maximum likelihood method was almost similar to the simple average method by demonstrating small variance and high correlation (r=0.9962) of the differences between the two. However, it still had the disadvantage that it was very sensitive in the presence of speckles within a bin. The geometric mean was most significantly deviated from the remaining methods regardless of the magnitude of chlorophyll-a concentration values. Its bias error tended to be large when the standard deviation within a bin increased with less uniformity. It was more biased when data uniformity became small. All the methods exhibited large errors as chlorophyll-a concentration values dominantly scatter in terms of time and space. This study emphasizes the importance of the speckle removal process and proper selection of average methods to reduce composite errors for diverse scientific applications of satellite-derived chlorophyll-a concentration data.

Characteristic of EP-MAP for Deburring of Microgroove using EP-MAP (전해-자기 복합 가공을 이용한 미세 그루브형상의 가공 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Magnetic abrasive polishing is an advanced deburring process for nonmagnetic materials and micropattern products that have non-machinability characteristics. Despite these advantages, there are some problems with using MAP for deburring. MAP has introduced geometric errors into microgrooves because of an over-cutting force caused by uncontrolled magnetic abrasives in the MAP tool. Thus, in this study, to solve this problem, an EP (electrolyte polishing)-MAP hybrid polishing process was developed for deburring microgrooves in an STS316 material. In addition, an evaluation of EP-MAP for the deburring of microgrooves was carried out by profiling the burrs. The results of the experiment showed geometric errors after the deburring process using MAP. However, in the case of EP-MAP, no geometric error was observed after the process because of the lower material removal rate in EP-MAP.

Geometric Modeling and Data Simulation of an Airborne LIDAR System (항공라이다시스템의 기하모델링 및 데이터 시뮬레이션)

  • A LIDAR can rapidly generate 3D points by densely sampling the surfaces of targets using laser pulses, which has been efficiently utilized to reconstruct 3D models of the targets automatically. Due to this advantage, LIDARs are increasingly applied to the fields of Defense and Security, for examples, being employed to intelligently guided missiles and manned/unmanned reconnaissance planes. For the prior verification of the LIDAR applicability, this study aims at generating simulated LIDAR data. Here, we derived the sensor equation by modelling the geometric relationships between the LIDAR sub-modules, such as GPS, IMU, LS and the systematic errors associated with them. Based on this equation, we developed a program to generate simulated data with the system parameters, the systematic errors, the flight trajectories and attitudes, and the reference terrain model given. This program had been applied to generating simulated LIDAR data for urban areas. By analyzing these simulated data, we verified the accuracy and usefulness of the simulation. The simulator developed in this study will provide economically various test data required for the development of application algorithms and contribute to the optimal establishment of the flight and system parameters.
