Mathematical Representation of Geometric Tolerances : Part 1 (기하 공차의 수학적 표현 : 1편)

  • Every mechanical component is fabricated with the variations in its size and shape, and the allowable range of the variation is specified by the tolerance in the design stage. Geometric tolerances specify the size or the thickness of each shape entity itself or its relative position and orientation with respect to datums. Since the range of shape variation can be represented by the variation of the coordinate system attached to the shape, the transformation matrix of the coordinate system would mathematically express the range of shape variation if the interval numbers are inserted for the elements of the transformation matrix. For the shape entity specified by the geometric tolerance with reference to datums, its range of variation can be also derived by propagating the transformation matrices composed of interval numbers. The propagation depends upon the order of precedence of datums.

  • In the present study, an integrated framework of geometric modeling, analysis, and design optimization is proposed. Geometric modeling is based on B-spline surface representation. Geometrically-exact shell finite element is implemented in analysis module. Control points of the surface are selected as design variables for optimization, which can make the interaction easier between analysis and surface representation. Sequential linear programming(SLP) is adopted for the shape optimization of surfaces. For the computation of shape sensitivities, semi-analytical method is used. The developed integrated framework should serve as a powerful tool for the geometric modeling, analysis, and shape design of surfaces.

  • In this paper, we present a new shape descriptor, which is named Poisson equation-Fourier-Mellin moment Descriptor. We solve the Poisson equation in the shape area, and use the solution to get feature function, which are then integrated using Fourier-Mellin moment to represent the shape. This method develops the Poisson equation-geometric moment Descriptor proposed by Lena Gorelick, and keeps both advantages of Poisson equation-geometric moment and Fourier-Mellin moment. It is proved better than Poisson equation-geometric moment Descriptor in shape recognition and classification experiments.

  • Generally, it is very difficult to inspect geometric shape of large 2D objects after machining. To maintain the accuracy for inspection, a robot vision is used to divide overall shape into several enlarged images, and image processing technique is applied to acquire one minute geometric contour. The inspection is to compare the NC data with the measured contour data by the vision system, and the algorithm is to rotate to minimize the maximum deviation coinciding two geometric centers. This paper experimentally shows that the proposed inspection algorithm is very useful fur a large machined object.

  • Geometric probing addresses the problem of determining geometric aspects of a structure from the mathematics and results of a physical measuring device such as a probe. This paper presents a new algorithm to recognize the shape of an unknown object by using a robot hand with a force and torque sensor. The new algorithm is called S.E.P.(Shape Exploration Procedure) which finds the global shape of an unknown object. The proposed method is composed of three major parts, finding contact informations such as contact point, calculation of shape information such as curvature, and expression of global shape from these informations. Comparing with the conventional approaches, the advantages of the proposed method are explained and verified by conducting experiments with a 3-dof SCARA robot.

  • A method of designing a manufacturing shape of ship plate parts considering welding deformation is introduced. In this paper, the design shape of a bracket is deformed not by a thermoelastic method but by a pure geometric method. Deformation quantities are estimated based on data captured in the field and then a manufacturing design shape is obtained by deforming an original design shape by a geometric deformation method. The proposed method has been implemented and tested in the shipyard.

  • Membrane structures, a kind of lightweight soft structural system, are used for spatial structures. The material property of the membrane has strong axial stiffness, but little bending stiffness. The design procedure of membrane structures are needed to do shape finding, stress-deformation analysis and cutting pattern generation. In shape finding, membrane structures are unstable structures initially. These soft structures need to be introduced initial stresses because of its initial unstable state, and it happens large deformation phenomenon. And also there are highly varied in their size, curvature and material stiffness. So, the approximation inherent in cutting pattern generation methods is quite different. Therefore, in this study, to find the structural shape after large deformation caused by Initial stress, we need the shape analysis considering geometric nonlinear ten And the geodesic line on surface of initial equilibrium shape and the cutting pattern generation using the geodesic line is introduced.

  • Geometric shape morphing is an interesting geometric operation that interpolates two geometric shapes to generate in-betweens. It is well known that Minkowski operations can be used to test and build collision-free motion paths and to modify shapes in digital image processing. In this paper, we present a new geometric modeling technique to control the morphing on geometric shapes based on Minkowski sum. The basic idea develops from the linear interpolation on two geometric shapes where the traditional algebraic sum is replaced by Minkowski sum. We extend this scheme into a Bezier-like control structure with multiple control shapes, which enables the interactive control over the intermediate shapes during the morphing sequence as in the traditional CAGD curve/surface editing. Moreover, we apply the theory of blossoming to our control structure, whereby our control structure becomes even more flexible and general. In this paper, we present mathematical models of control structure, their properties, and computational issues with examples.

  • This paper focuses on a number of criteria that enable controlling the influence of geometric simplification on the quality of finite element (FE) computations. To perform the mechanical simulation of a component, the corresponding geometric model typically needs to be simplified in accordance with hypotheses adopted regarding the component's mechanical behaviour. The method presented herein serves to compute an a posteriori indicator for the purpose of estimating the significance of each feature removal. This method can be used as part of an adaptive process of geometric simplification. If a shape detail removed during the shape simplification process proves to be influential on mechanical behaviour, the particular detail can then be reinserted into the simplified model, thus making it possible to readapt the initial simulation model. The fields of application for such a method are: static problems involving linear elastic behaviour, and linear thermal problems with stationary conduction.

  • Hydrophobic hairs of some insects make bubbles underwater. These bubbles makes possible for insects to breathe underwater. In this thesis, influence of geometric characteristics on air-liquid interface with pressure is investigated. Air-liquid interface shape with hair diameter over distance between hairs is analyzed This results expects to be used in the developments of artificial gill technology.
