  • Although laser interferometer measurement system has the advantage of range and accuracy, the traditional error measurement methods for geometric errors(two straightness and three angular errors) of a machine tool measures error components one at a time. It may also create an optical path difference and affect the measurement accuracy. In order to identify and compensate for geometric error of a moving body, an on-line measurement system for simultaneous detection of the five error components of a moving axis is required. An on-line measurement system with 5 degrees of freedom was developed for geometric error detection. Performance verification of the system was performed on an error generating mechanism. Experimental results show the feasibility of this system for identifying geometric errors of a side of machine tool.

  • The objective of this research is to develop a measurement error model for sculptured surfaces in On-Machine Measurement (OMM) process based on a closed-loop configuration. The geometric error model of each axis of a vertical CNC Machining center is derived using a 4${\times}$4 homogeneous transformation matrix. The ideal locations of a touch-type probe for the scupltured surface measurement are calculated from the parametric surface representation and X-, Y- directional geometric errors of the machine. Also, the actual coordinates of the probe are calculated by considering the pre-travel variation of a probe and Z-directional geometric errors. Then, the step-by-step measurement error analysis method is suggested based on a closed-loop configuration of the machining center including workpiece and probe errors. The simulation study shows the simplicity and effectiveness of the proposed error modeling strategy.

  • Although laser interferometer measurement system has advantages of measurement range and accuracy, it has some disadvantages when measurement of multi degrees of freedom of motion are required. Because the traditional error measurement methods for geometric errors (two straightness and three angular errors) of a slide of machine tools measures error components one at a time. It may also create an optical path difference and affect the measurement accuracy. In order to identify and compensate for geometric errors of a moving rigid body in real time processes, an on-line error measurement system for simultaneous detection of the five error components of a moving object is required. Using laser alignment technique and some optoelectronic components, an on-line measurement system with 5 degrees of freedom was developed for the geometric error detection in this study Performance verification of the system has been performed on an error generating mechanism. Experimental results show the feasibility of this system for identifying geometric errors of a slide of machine tools.

  • This paper discisses the effects geometric errors on the measurement of error motions of rotor with the cylindrical capacitive displacement sensor. Analytic model of the measuring process with this sensor is derived and this model shows that the effect of geometric errors of sensor is larger than that of rator on the measurement of error motions of rotor. The computer simulation shows effect of periodic errors in this sensor on the measuring orbit.

  • One of the major limitations of productivity and quality in metal cutting is the machining accuracy of machine tools. The machining accuracy is affected by geometric and thermal errors of the machine tools. Therefore, a key requirement for improving te machining accuracy and product quality is to reduce the geometric and thermal errors of machine tools. This study models geometric error for error analysis and develops on-machine measurement system by which the volumetric erors are measured. The geometric error is modeled using form shaping function(FSF) which is defined as the mathematical relationship between form shaping motion of machine tool and machined surface. The constant terms included in the error model are found from the measurement results of on-machine measurement system. The developed on-machine measurement system consists of the spherical ball artifact (SBA), the touch probe unit with a star type stylus, the thermal data logger and the personal computer. Experiments, performed with the developed measurement system, show that the system provides a high measuring accuracy, with repeatability of ${\pm}2{\mu}m$ in X, Y and Z directions.

  • Inner diameter of bearing race is automatically measured by complete inspection system after grinding process. Contact type three points supporting method is widely applied to automatic inner diameter measurement because of its excellent stability. However, the geometric consideration regarding three points supporting method is not sufficient. In this study, the error equation from geometric error analysis of three points supporting method is found. The effect of factors in the error equation is also investigated. The error equation is linear for difference of diameter in sample and master on range of tolerance. An error becomes more and more larger, when the distance of two supporting balls or the diameter of supporting ball are increased. In the result, some considerations are proposed for measurement of inner diameter by the three points supporting method.

  • This paper proposes a method of geometric error calibration for a parallel using only sensor of length measurement without additional sensors. The concept is generalized which creates measurement residuals by exploring conflicting information provided with external length sensing. Although this calibration method requires many configurations, it has an advantage of using relatively simple length measurements. This method is shown to provide good calibration results, especially when there exist smaller measurement noises and more configurations are measured.

  • One of the major limitations of productivity and quality in metal cutting is the machining accuracy of machine tools. The machining accuracy is affected by geometric errors, thermally-induced errors, and the deterioration of the machine tools. Geometric and thermal errors of machine tools should be measured and compensated to manufacture high quality products. In metal cutting, the machining accuracy is more affected by thermal errors than by geometric errors. This paper models of the thermal errors for error analysis and develops on-the-machine measurement system by which the volumetric error are measured and compensated. The thermal error is modeled by means of angularity errors of a column and thermal drift error of the spindle unit which are measured by the touch probe unit with a star type styluses and a designed spherical ball artifact (SBA). Experiments, performed with the developed measurement system, show that the system provides a high measuring accuracy, with repeatability of $\pm$2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in X, Y and Z directions. It is believed that the developed measurement system can be also applied to the machine tools with CNC controller. In addition, machining accuracy and product quality can be improved by using the developed measurement system when the spherical ball artifact is mounted on the modular fixture.
