  • Chemical weathering processes related with mineralogical characters and ground water condition are very essential engineering problems in soluble rock masses. Detailed geological mapping were performed and 8 samples were collected from the 2 formations including various rock faces to deduce the possibility of the limestone cavity formation and their mechanism. Petrological descriptions and various petro-mineralogical experiments such as XRD analysis, clay mineral analysis, absorptivity test, impurity analysis were conducted to evaluate the cavity making processes. Laboratory solubility test for rock specimen were also carried out under the strong acid (pH=1) condition. From the experimental data and geological mapping data, it is found that the formation of limestone cavities in limestones are strongly related with geological structures such as beddings, cleavages and the contents of impurities rather than CaCO$_3$contents. In case of dolomites, rock textures, grain size, amounts and types of clay minerals as well as geological structures are major controlling factors of cavity forming processes

  • The Yeongweol - Yemi area, in the area between the Kagdong thrust fault and Samcheog Coalfield, comprises Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary and igneous rocks. Geologic structures related with thrust movements are dominant in the area. These are thrust faults, imbricate structures and hanging-wall anticline. Thrust sheets were transported from NW to SE and these differ from the Cretaceous Bulkuksa Orogeny of which thrust sheets were transported from N to S. NE - trending folds are dominant, but NW - trending folds and refolded folds are also found. NW - trending folds are only found in the Cambro-Ordovician sedimentary rocks. It might be an indication of the presence of late Paleozoic tectonism in the Korean Peninsula.

  • This paper describes the effect of acid rock drainage(ARD) produced from the cut slope on the slope structures. Acid rock drainage is originated from a rock quarry located in coal mine zone and mineralization belt of Chosen Supergroup and Ogcheon group, andesite with the pyrite, and acid sulfate soils of Tertiary in Korea. The cut slope, where acid rock drainage comes out, almost has been constructed by shotcrete and planting works. According to the field observation results, in most cases, the acid rock drainage has an adverse effect on slope structures. The shotcrete, anchors and rock bolts produced corrosive action, and bad germination and growth diseases of covering plants of the slope planting construction due to ARD.

  • This paper describes the definition of the Ogcheon Group and its characters, and indicates that it is neither the Precambrian nor metamorphosed Cambro-Ordovician sediments, and its geological age might fall in Post-Ordovician on the bases of lithostratigraphy, correlation and geological structures.

  • Geopier soil reinforcement system which crushed aggregate is put into a hole and rammed the aggregate with tamper is a viable alternative to deep foundation to over-excavation and replacement. Also, Geopier is intermediate foundation of deep and shallow foundation. In this paper, the value of Geopier element stiffness modulus($K_g$) when designed is compared with the measured value($K_g$) by the in-situ modulus Load test in the field. Also, this paper presents a technology overview of system capabilities and application for foundation reinforcement of structures.

  • Taebaeg-Hajang area, in the northern part of Taebaeg city, comprises of Paleozoic sedimentary sequences and Cretaceous intrusive and volcanoclastic rocks. The rocks in the area are affected by folding and thrusting during the Bulgugsa Orogeny. In Taebaeg area, geologic structures related with thrust movement are dominant. These structures are small scale of klippe and window, back thrust, and asymmetric folds related with blind thrust. Tear fault or compartment fault due to differential movement of thrust sheets have "en echelon" arrays. Small scale transpression effects occurred along these faults and produced the flower structure. According to strain measurement using by ooids from limestone and quartz grains from quartzite, strain ratios are very low and strain ellipsoids are apparent oblate type.

  • This study aims to present cases of rock slope failures caused by geological structures. Status of slope failures, results of cause analysis and stabilizing methods are introduced, focusing primarily on rock slope failures caused by specific geologic structures, such as intersection of faults infilled with clay, foliation and fault shear zone by dike intrusion and deep-seated clayey layer along lithologic boundary. Detailed geological survey, geophysical exploration and boring survey were conducted for cause analysis. Stabilizing method to prevent further slope failures and to ensure long-term stability of slopes were established, considering characteristics of geological structures, types of failure and geological conditions.

  • When caverns are excavated, it is very important to understand the distribution and charateristics of geological structures because the structures have an significant effect on grouting, rock reinforcement, and groundwater flow, etc. The main water bearing fractures have an orientation of N50~60W and these fractures are known as tension fractures. Their orientation coincides with a long elliptical axis ofpumping test, and they cross the tension fractures of N10~30E. They have typical fracture systems ofrhombic type in this area.

  • Most of the historic hot springs are artesian wells in Korea. However, many boreholes have been drilled due to the shortage of hot water, and hot water is now being pumped by submersible pump installed at most of hot spring areas. The distribution of boreholes are expected to be related to the geological structure, and the study was carried out to interpret the relationship between two factors. The distributional maps of boreholes were made and the geological structures were interpreted at eight hot spring areas. Some distributions of boreholes have no special direction, and these are not related to the geological structure at Dogo, Suanbo, and Deoksan. The others are consistent with the direction of the geological structure at Goseong, Onyang, Sokcho, Yuseong, and Bugok.

  • Geological structures such as fault and fracture patterns provide important information about preliminary exploration of mineralized areas and geological characterization. We apply a filtering method taking the sun's azimuth angle into account to a shaded relief image derived from a digital elevation model (DEM), by which even linear edges extending parallel to the sun direction can be effectively extracted. Then, Generalized Hough tranform is applied to extract lineanments which correspond to fault and fracture patterns.
