  • The sand-eel, Ammedytes Personatus is a commercially important fish abounantly found in west and east coast of Korea. Samples were collected from the Baegryeong Island (Yellow Sea), Geoje Island(southern coast) and Jumunjin (East Sea) from May 1973 to December 1974. In this paper the author dealt with some biological point of the fish, especially the relationship between total length ang body weight, and the major spawning season and sex ratio. 1. The major spawning season was confined to the end of November and the end of December at Jumunjin. 2. The sex ratio (male/female) is 0.75 before the main spawning season and increases up to 1.36 after spawning at Jumunjin in 1974. 3. The relationship between the total length (L) and body weight (In were represented as follows: $W=0.0001906L^{3.1998319}$ for the sample from Baegryeong Is. $W=0.0003419L^{3.0213438}$ for the sample from Geoje Is. $W=0.0002655L^{3.1408629}$ for the sample from Jumunjin.

  • We analyzed annual and seasonal variations in fish species composition and distribution patterns using both daily catch and quantitative analysis data collected from a set-net fishery over a period of two years (2011-2012) on the coast of Dapo, Geoje Island. Set-net fishing season in this area is from May to November, and the annual yield based on the daily catch data was 171,412 kg in 2011, and 102,611 kg in 2012. In total, there were 46 species (belonging to 36 families and 12 orders) in 2011, and 41 species (belonging to 25 families and 9 orders) in 2012. The dominant species in terms of numbers were Trachurus japonicus, Engraulis japonicus, Clupea pallasii, Scomber japonicus, and Sphyraena pinguis. The range in fork length for T. japonicus and E. japonicus was from 3.2 to 23.9 cm, and from 2.6 to 13.3 cm, respectively. The fork length of recruiting juveniles to the Dapo set-net fishing ground ranged from 4.6 to 7.8 cm (median) for T. japonicus, and from 4.1 to 5.0 cm (median) for E. japonicus. The fact that most of the fish caught from the two species were at immature growth stages implies that the coast of Dapo can act as a nursery area for these migratory species.

  • The sand shrimp, Crangon hakodatei commonly occured in the southern coast of Korea. The population structure, growth, mortality, and size at sexual maturity of C. hakodatei were examined by the samples collected from the coastal area of Geoje Island, Korea from October 2000 to October 2001. For estimation of parameters of growth and mortality, monthly length-frequency data were analysed by ELEFAN. Parameters of growth were estimated, using the modified yon Bertalanffy growth function model. The female grew faster and reached larger size at the same age than the male, There was a breeding season showing a peak in winter (January to february). Total mortality by length-converted catch curve was estimated at $3.10 yr^{-1}$, fishing mortality was $0.62 y^{-1}$ and natural mortality was $2.48 yr^{-1}$. The size at $50\%$ sexual maturity for the female ranged from CL 11.00 to 11.50 mm.

  • Measurements of bottom loss as a function of grazing angle (in range of $9{\sim}14^{\circ}$) at a frequency range of 4 ~ 8 kHz were conducted on an experimental site off Geoje island in October 2015. Geoacoustic inversion of the surficial sediment thickness is performed using the arrival time difference between the surficial layer and the sub-bottom layer reflected signal. To invert the thickness of surficial sediment, we used the grain size of $8{\sim}10{\phi}$ obtained by KIGAM (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources). The thickness of the surficial sediment was estimated to be 4 ~ 7 m. Finally, this inversion result was compared with the geoacoustic observation conducted by the KIOST (Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology) using sub-bottom profiler.

  • Coastal terrace was developed at 7.2m height near Shinchon village in Geoje Island. It is located on the east side of southern coast in Korean Peninsula, where sea-level changes caused by ebb and flow of the tide, embayment are relatively low. Due to the breccia layer by mass-movement, dark grayish clayey formation, marine origin's rounded gravel are deposited sequentially in a cross-section of coastal terrace, so it provides a good example which understand Holocene sea level changes to determine the effect on the various sedimentary environments. For the purpose of identifying the morphogenetic process, Grain size, Roundness, XRD, AMS dating analysis was attempted. As a result, after last glacial age, Holocene sea level rise to +5.6m(4,740±100yrs BP). At that time, various geomorphological features are considered to be formed.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the seasonal changes of phytoplankton communities based on the environmental changes in a dense oyster farming area (Hansan-Geoje Island) from June to December 2016. The water temperature varied from $14^{\circ}C$ to $28.8^{\circ}C$ and its salinity ranged from 29.4 to 34.2 psu. Nitrate+nitrite was kept at c.a. $3.0{\mu}M$ on the surface layer from June to July, below the concentration limit in August and early September, and then gradually increased from late September. Ammonia was high on July 20 and August 10, and its seasonal characteristics were not clear. Phosphate ranged from 0.01 to $0.7{\mu}M$ on the surface layer, and its seasonal changes were similar to those of nitrate+nitrite. Mean silicate concentrations were $10.7{\mu}M$ on the surface and $15.7{\mu}M$ in the bottom layer, and it was not acted as a limiting factor for the growth of phytoplankton. Among the phytoplankton community, Bacillariophyceae, Dinophyceae and Cryptophyceae was 61.2%, 22.5%, and 13.6%, respectively. In late June, dinoflagellate Prorocentrum donghaiense was dominant in the outer waters(St. T1), later on, Cryptomonas spp. and Chaetoceros spp. were dominant, respectively. From late September to October, diatoms Pseudo-nitzschia spp. and Chaetoceros spp. were stimulated under non-stratified condition after the typhoon. In December, A. sanguinea was found to be $1.7{\times}10^5cells\;L^{-1}$. Seasonally, relative high phytoplankton biomass may be favorable to maintain high production of filter feeder oyster in the dense oyster farming areas of Hansan and Geoje Island.

  • Rubus palmatus Thunb. var. palmatus (Rosaceae) was first discovered in Anmyeon-do and Geoje-do, Korea, and the new Korean name 'Gin-yip-dan-pung-ttal-gi' was given. This taxon can be distinguished from var. coptophyllus by having 3-lobed or rarely undivided leaves. We, for the first time, report the distribution of R. palmatus var. coptophyllus (A. Gray) Kuntze from the island of Geoje-do in Korea and clarified the Korean vernacular name of 'Dan-pung-ttal-gi.' Finally, we designated the lectotype of R. palmatus using C. P. Thunberg's specimen (UPS-THUNB. 12282).

  • Little is known about the movements of finless porpoises Neophocaena asiaeorientalis and their relationship with sea surface temperature (SST). A female finless porpoise that was stranded alive on the shore at Busan was rehabilitated for 16 months at the Sea Life Busan Aquarium. The porpoise was released off Geoje Island with a satellite tag on her mid-ridge and tracking data were received for 7 days. The porpoise moved directly to the southern shore of Gadeok Island, where an earlier study reported that finless porpoises were most abundant around the island. The tracking route revealed two other potential primary habitats. The porpoise moved to the middle of the east coast of the Korean Peninsula at Uljin, beyond the distribution boundary known from earlier studies. Satellite infrared images detected a cold water mass off the Uljin coast and the tracking route showed that the porpoise avoided this low-temperature area.

  • The aim of this study was to determine the characteristics of wave transformation in the shallow water of the Nakdong River estuary due to variations in air pressure, air temperature, wind speed, and wind direction. We analyzed the correlation between weather factors and wind waves in offshore regions near Geoje Island and the Nakdong River estuary in April and May 2007. The weather and wind wave data were obtained from the automatic ocean observation buoy near Geoje Island operated by the Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA). For the estuary region, the wind wave information was the result of field observations, and weather data were obtained from the Busan Meteorological Station. Field observations of water waves in April and May showed that the maximum wave height decreased by about 2.2 m. M oreover, wave height decreased significantly by about 1.3 m due to the reduction in wave energy caused by the water waves propagating from Geoje buoy to the Nakdong River estuary. We conclude that offshore or wind waves coming into the Nakdong River estuary showed considerable height variation due to the prevailing weather conditions, especially wind speed and direction. In particular, headwinds tended to decrease the wave size in inverse proportion to the wind speed.
