  • This study aims to investigate high school students' misconceptions in the subject of Korean geography, and further to create categories to systematically understand the misconceptions. The researcher asked experienced geography teachers to produce a list of students' geographic misconceptions, and then classified the misconceptions. The following five categories were created: 1) self-centered understanding based on everyday life and experience, 2) confusion by words, 3) inappropriate applications of operational definition or geographic concepts, 4) naive inference, and 5) inflexible generalization. The validity of this classification was established through a panel discussion with experts in geography education. The misconceptions that belonged to the categories of naive inference and inflexible generalization occupied a great portion. The misconception list in this study provides a useful data-set for researchers whose interest lies in misconception, and geography teachers can devise a lesson plan that explicitly emphasizes correct geographic concepts to prevent students from establishing misconceptions.

  • The King George Island, where the King Sejong Station is located, represents one of the gateways to the Antarctica from the point of its geographical aspect. It also serves as an advanced post, and plays an important role in the extending for Korea's Antarctic research activities. The existence of maps is not only a basic element for the constructing geographic informations supporting these activities, but also an implied way of announcing the sovereignty over the KingSejong Station in global world. However, the precise surveying for the geographic information has not been carried out, and thus topographical maps as well as geographic information assuring enough accuracy are still missed in this area. This fact had forced Korea to rely on using maps produced by foreign countries. Therefore, this study aims to generate digital topographical maps of 1: 5,000 scale for the constructing geographic information using lightweight aerial photogrammetry system first. And further, it will contribute to offer practical base data for the future research related to the Antarctic environment through the analysis of glacier retreat and change using this new digital map comparing with existing one.

  • We need the acquisition of accurate geographic information as well as immediate updates of information on the city in order to plan and manage the changes of the cities more systematically. The geographic information for judging the changes of the cities can be used not only in various policies and studies, but also as important data themselves that record the growth of cities. In this paper ore could build the GIS database with attribute data about the classification accuracy and the class and by providing the land cover map by each classification method according to the accuracy that the user requires, we could provide more reliable and various information.

  • South korea has been developing and managing the complete dimensions, around the rivers to rapid economic growth. In Korea, where water resources are scarce, administration and work are complicated and diversified in the computerization of related facilities and hydrologic data due to the indiscriminate development of river facilities. In general, dividing the water system based on object in remote sensing is relatively accurate in the image with the same spectral characteristics. However, the distinction between the reservoir and the river must be made manually due to the characteristics of remote sensing. Therefore, this study performed three classifications using GIS (Geographic Information System) to classify reservoirs and rivers. For the purpose of accuracy analysis, the land cover map provided by EGIS (Environmental Geographic Information Service) was used to evaluate the accuracy, and the average of 85.63% was found to be 75.40% of rivers, 89.50% of reservoirs, and 92.00% of others.

  • A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, retrieve and display the data which are referenced to geographic location. With the progress of computer graphics technologies, GIS is now become applicable to microcomputer level. A prototype Sea Information System (SIS) applicable to microcomputer has been developed for serving informations related to naval operations in the special sea areas. This system includes GIS technologies, cartographic data captured through the tablet digitizer. which results immediate displaying on pen plotters. GIS provides users with menu-driven user interface for the retrieval of informations concerning military zones, patrol area of war ship, naval bases, radar sites and its search area, missile stations, and ships' current positions. The system is currently applicable to IBM PC/AT. Minimal hardware configuration consists 640k RAM, hard disk, and pen plotter or dot matrix printer.

  • In AVL, GIS analyze the information from the vehicles to provide commercial or other value far user. As spatial analysis functions in GIS make a new valuable information using the vehicle's position and geographic object's location, they perform an important roles to improve the management efficiency of vehicles. Most GIS however are used static data for the spatial analysis, so the research area on AVL used dynamic vehicle location has generated unsuitable result. In this study, we use GPS real time tracking data to perform spatial analysis between moving vehicle and static geographic object. The method proposed in this paper considers the driving direction of vehicle and creates the result which is located in forward of vehicle. In this paper, two spatial analysis functions, near and connectivity, are developed.

  • Most of the agricultural structures are in shortage of feasible facility management because these structures are small in size and spacially distributed in rural area. Inspection tools based on visual inspections are generally used for agricultural structures in most of the countries, including Korea. It is necessary to survey data of the irrigation structures to maintain records, and to develop the interface program by constructing database of inspection data. This study was conducted to develop a system for safe appraisal and repair works on agricultural irrigation structures. Repair and rehabilitation method can be chosen from an optimum viewpoint if the information between the method and life-cycle management cost of agricultural structures is constructed in the database. In this study, the system assisting onsite field investigation and determining the typical rehabilitation method of typical agricultural structural problems such as fractures and cracks of members was developed.

  • The purpose of this study is the development, application and assessment of probability and artificial neural network methods for assessing landslide susceptibility in a chosen study area. As the basic analysis tool, a Geographic Information System (GIS) was used for spatial data management. A probability method was used for calculating the rating of the relative importance of each factor class to landslide occurrence, For calculating the weight of the relative importance of each factor to landslide occurrence, an artificial neural network method was developed. Using these methods, the landslide susceptibility index was calculated using the rating and weight, and a landslide susceptibility map was produced using the index. The results of the landslide susceptibility analysis, with and without weights, were confirmed from comparison with the landslide location data. The comparison result with weighting was better than the results without weighting. The calculated weight and rating can be used to landslide susceptibility mapping.

  • Purpose: This study examined the impact factors of cesarean section based on the ecological approach in Korea. Methods: Population-based data (Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs) were used from 2,849 delivery cases during 2003~2009. Data were analyzed using geographic statistics with STATA 10.0 and hierarchical logistic regression with SPSS/WIN 12.0. Results: The range of cesarean section rate was 28.8~44.7% with geographic distribution. The proportion of mother's problem was increasing in choice of cesarean section. According to the ecological model, age of mother (OR=1.08), time of birth (OR=0.79), delivery in hospital (OR=1.83), delivery in clinic (OR=1.46), and education of mother (OR=2.61) had significant impact on cesarean section. Conclusion: This study contributes to provide the impact factors of the high cesarean rate in Korea ecologically. Policy maker and health care provider can consider these results to reduce cesarean section rate.
