When a contingency occurs in a large transmission route in a power system, it can generate various instabilities that may lead to a power system blackout. In particular, transient instability in a power system needs to be immediately addressed, and preventive measures should be in place prior to fault occurrence. Measures to achieve transient stability include system reinforcement, power generation restriction, and generator tripping. Because the interpretation of transient stability is a time domain simulation, it is difficult to determine the efficacy of proposed countermeasures using only simple simulation results. Therefore, several methods to quantify transient stability have been introduced. Among them, the single machine equivalent (SIME) method based on the equal area criterion (EAC) can quantify the degree of instability by calculating the residual acceleration energy of a generator. However, method for generator tripping effect evaluation does not have been established. In this study, we propose a method to evaluate the effect of generator tripping on transient stability that is based on the SIME method. For this purpose, the measures that reflect generator tripping in the SIME calculation are reviewed. Simulation results obtained by applying the proposed method to the IEEE 39-bus system and KEPCO system are then presented.

Transient security assessment(TSA) is becoming an essential requirement not only for security monitoring but also for stabilizing control of power systems under new electricity environments. It has already been pointed out that fast transient stability study is an important part for monitoring and controlling system security. In this paper, we discuss an energy function method for stabilizing control of transiently unstable systems by introducing generator tripping system to enhance the transient stability of power systems. The stabilization with less tripped power can be obtained by tripping the generators faster than out-of-synchronism relay. Fast transient stability assessment based on the state estimation and direct transient energy function method is an important part of the stabilizing scheme. It is possible to stabilize the transiently unstable system by tripping less generators before the action of out-of-synchronism relay, especially when a group of generator are going to be out-of-synchronism. Moreover, the amount of generator output needed for tripping can be decided by Transient Energy Function(TEF) method. The main contribution of this paper is on the stabilizing scheme which can be running in the Wide Area Control System.

Many electrical fires are occurred by leakage currents and sparks generated by a short circuit. Earth leakage circuit breakers (ELCBs) should be tripped at the moment of the faults mentioned above. In this paper, we described the tripping characteristics of ELCBs against parallel arcing faults. A diesel engine generator with the capacity of 375 kVA source was adopted to provide enough large current when a parallel arcing occurred. The experimental results showed that most ELCBs we experimented were not tripped against short-duration pulse currents produced by parallel arcing because the ELCBs are designed to be tripped by a large current with long duration similar to power frequency.

Special Protection Scheme(SPS) that operates scenarios about faults beyond the normally protective action is wide system protection technology for the purpose of wide areas protection. Therefore, the SPS focuses on the improvement of the power supply capability by protecting the system rather than protecting the system equipments. Since the SPS requires emergency operation, the operation schedule is set up in advance by analyzing various scenarios. Since the SPS's action scheme uses generator tripping and is a classical method it is presently the most powerful one. However, as the setting of SPS is set to the most severe disturbance, the scheme tends to trip more generators than required to prevent fault propagation. It is highly likely that tripping generator units to prevent fault propagation would result in difficulty of system management and possibility of load shedding. Accordingly, it is desirable that generators are connected to the system within the range that ensures system stability and intelligent SPS is currently under development to solve the problem being stated. In this paper, as a part of developing the intelligent SPS, application of the fast-valving and braking resistor scheme to the generators is being proposed and analysed to reduce the number of tripped generators.
A line overload emergency control strategy based on the source-load synergy coefficient is proposed in this paper. First, the definition of the source-load synergy coefficient is introduced. When line overload is detected, the source-load branch synergy coefficient and source-load distribution synergy coefficient are calculated according to the real-time operation mode of the system. Second, the generator tripping and load shedding control node set is determined according to the source-load branch synergy coefficient. And then, according to the line overload condition, the control quantity of each control node is determined using the Double Fitness Particle Swarm Optimization (DFPSO), with minimum system economic loss as the objective function. Thus load shedding for the overloaded line could be realized. On this basis, in order to guarantee continuous and reliable power supply, on the condition that no new line overload is caused, some of the untripped generators are selected according to the source-load distribution synergy coefficient to increase power output. Thus power supply could be restored to some of the shedded loads, and the economic loss caused by emergency control could be minimized. Simulation tests on the IEEE 10-machine 39-bus system verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed strategy.

In a conventional power system, the frequency is recovered to the nominal value by the inertial, primary, and secondary responses of the synchronous generators (SGs) after a large disturbance such as a generator tripping. For a power system with high wind penetration, the system inertia is significantly reduced due to the maximum power point tracking control based operation of the variable speed wind generators (WGs). This paper proposes a virtual inertial control for a wind power plant (WPP) based on the maximum rate of change of frequency to release more kinetic energy stored in the WGs. The performance of the proposed algorithm is investigated in a model system, which consists of a doubly fed induction generator-based WPP and SGs using an EMTP-RV simulator. The results indicate that the proposed algorithm can improve the frequency nadir after a generator tripping. In addition, the algorithm can lead the instant of a frequency rebound and help frequency recovery after the frequency rebound.

Special Protection Scheme(SPS) for generator tripping action is an emergency control tool that secures the power system stability by instantly tripping the pre-determined number of generators to avoid the acceleration of the remaining generators in a large-scaled power plants when a fault occurs on the drawing transmission lines. However, since the existing operating conditions of SPS are set based on a peak demand, SPS could trip more generators than required if it is activated during the off-peak demand period. For this, this paper proposes the algorithm for setting the operating conditions of SPS through the online stability evaluation with the periodically updated operating conditions of power systems. The proposed algorithm adopts COA for the accuracy and speed of the stability evaluation, and can reduce the number of tripping generators by SPS during the off-peak demand period. This results in reducing the loss of profit caused by a fault on power systems.

The electric propulsion system requires more reliability and safety than the conventional propulsion system because any sudden changes of electric system would bring tremendous effects on the ship's safety and propulsion. So it is very important to consider the potential transient effects. This paper discusses one of the worst electric accident. That is, one or two of generators are out of service in normal seagoing condition. And the appropriate measures are simulated in order to prevent the frequency decline that can bring the other generator's tripping. In addition, the relation between the transient effects and the major factors(inertia of generator/motors, governor's drooping characteristic and response speed) are also identified using the ETAP software.

Due to the highly concentrated power plants integrated through the limited transmission lines in Korea, a Special Protection System(SPS) has been applied to stabilize the power systems by instantly tripping the pre-determined generators in a large-scaled power plant when a fault occurs on the drawing transmission lines. Moreover, power outputs of those generators are constrained to avoid any activation of Under Frequency Load Shedding(UFLS) even after those generators are tripped by SPS action. For this, this paper proposes a method for calculating the required capacity of Energy Storage System(ESS) expected to relieve the operating constraints to generators using its fast response for controlling power system frequency. The proposed method uses the generator acceleration energy to derive the stable condition during the SPS action. In addition, its effectiveness is verified by the case studies adopting actual SPS operations in Korean power systems.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effects of switching-over control for power system stabilization. Switching-over control is applied to western part of korea electric power system to improve transient stability and short-circuit capacity. It's effectiveness is demonstrated in terms of fault current level and critical clearing time which is quantitative evaluation means of transient stability. The effect of generator tripping for power system stabilization is also presented.
