  • Social reason was mostly the motivation for using Facebook among Generation Y, but results on Generation X were still inconclusive due to limited studies. By using content analysis of 93 participants' written statements gathered on April to May 2012, this study compared motivations among Facebookers from two generations. The study finds that Generation X and Y shared similar motivations. The majority of both generations use Facebook to keep in touch with their friends, as well as to seek updated information. A smaller number use Facebook for entertainment, online business, and self-expression. In addition, participants were willing to continue using Facebook in the future despite the fact that they had Twitter accounts.

  • Mesh generation for the region of interest is prerequisite for numerical analysis of governing partial differential equations describing phenomena with proper physic. Mesh generation is, however, usually considered as a major obstacle for a routine application of numerical approaches in Engineering applications. Therefore automatic mesh generation is highly pursued. In this paper automated quadrilateral surface mesh generation is proposed. According to the present method, Cartesian cells of proper resolution for a region bounding the whole region of interest are first generated and the interior cells are identified. Then projecting their surface meshes onto the boundary surfaces gives surface mesh consisting of quadrilateral cells. This method has been implemented as an application program, and example cases are given.

  • An algorithm for the automatic generation of quadrilateral shell elements on three-dimensional sculptured surfaces has been developed, which is one of the key issues in the finite element analysis of structures with complex shapes such as automobile structures. Mesh generation on sculptured surfaces is performed in three steps. First a sculptured surface is transformed to a projection plane, on which the loops are subdivided into subloops by using the best split lines, and with the use of 6-node/8-node loop operators and a layer operator, quadrilateral finite elements are constructed on this plane. Finally, the constructed mesh is transformed back to the original sculptured surfaces. The proposed mesh generation scheme is suited for the generation of non-uniform meshes so that it can be effectively used when the desired mesh density is available. Sample meshes are presented to demonstrate the versatility of the algorithm.

  • Thermodynamic cycle analysis has been performed for the power generation systems to utilize the cold energy of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Among many possible configurations of the cycle, the open Rankine cycle, the closed Rankine cycle, and the closed Brayton cycle are selecte for the analysis because of their practical importance. The power output per unit mass of LNG has been analytically calculated for various design parameters. The optimal conditions for the parameters to maximize the power output are presented and some of the design considerations are discussed.

  • A novel anti-islanding method for the distributed power generation system (DPGS) is proposed in this paper. Three different islanding scenarios are explored and presented based on the analysis of real and reactive power mismatch. It is shown via investigation that islanding voltage is a function of real power alone, where its frequency is a function of both real and reactive power. Following this analysis, a robust anti-islanding algorithm is developed. The proposed algorithm continuously perturbs ($\pm$5%) the reactive power supplied by the DPGS while simultaneously monitoring the utility voltage and frequency. In the event of islanding, a measurable frequency deviation takes place, upon which the real power of the DPGS is further reduced to 80%. A drop in voltage positively confirms islanding and the DPGS is then safely disconnected. This method of control is shown to be robust: it is able to detect islanding under resonant loads and is also fast acting (operable in one cycle). Possible islanding conditions are simulated and verified through analysis. Experimental results on a 0.5kW fuel cell system connected to a utility grid are discussed.

  • Advancements in next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies have significantly increased the translational use of genomics data in the medical field as well as the demand for computational infrastructure capable processing that data. To enhance the current understanding of software and hardware used to compute large scale human genomic datasets (NGS), the performance and accuracy of optimized versions of GATK algorithms, including Parabricks and Sentieon, were compared to the results of the original application (GATK V4.1.0, Intel x86 CPUs). Parabricks was able to process a 50× whole-genome sequencing library in under 3 h and Sentieon finished in under 8 h, whereas GATK v4.1.0 needed nearly 24 h. These results were achieved while maintaining greater than 99% accuracy and precision compared to stock GATK. Sentieon's somatic pipeline achieved similar results greater than 99%. Additionally, the IBM POWER9 CPU performed well on bioinformatic workloads when tested with 10 different tools for alignment/mapping.

  • In this second part of the paper, the automatic mesh generation and remeshing algorithm using bubble packing method is applied to the nonlinear problem. The remeshing/refinement procedure is necessary in the large deformation process especially because the mesh distortion deteriorates the convergence and accuracy. To perform the nonliear analysis, the transfer of state variables such as displacement and strain is added to the algorithm of Part 1. The equilibrium equation based on total Lagrangian formulation and elasto-viscoplastic model is used. For the numerical experiment, the upsetting process including the contact constraint condition is analyzed by two refinement criteria. And from the result, it is addressed that the present algorithm can generate the refined meshes easily at the largely deformed area with high error.

  • The performance of a torque converter can be expressed by the performance parameters such as flow radius and flow angle, on the mean flow path. The geometric analysis of the torque converter is required to determine these parameters for the modeling of the torque converter. In general, the blade shape is depicted by three dimensional data at the mid-surface of blade or those of the pressure and suction side. To generate three dimensional model of the blade using the data mentioned above, a consistent data format and a shape generation algorithm are required. This paper presents a useful consistent data format of the blades and an algorithm for the geometrical shape generation. By the geometric analysis program to which the shape generation algorithm is embedded, the variation of blade angles in rotating element analyzed. Then finally, the analyzed results of geometric profile of a blade are compared with those of the blade design principle, so called forced vortex theorem.

  • In this paper, an analysis is being performed on the effect of harmonics on loads in a distributed generation environment which includes renewable energy sources such as wind farms. The paper will assess the limits of the harmonic content that is allowed to be present in the adjacent loads while conforming to the distributed generation connection standards. The analysis is being performed in PSCAD/EMTDC where field measurements of wind data is being employed for the study.

  • This paper is of concern to queueing analysis of the dynamic rate leaky bucket(LB) scheme in which the token generation interval changes according to the buffer state at a token generation epoch. Cell arrivals are assumed to follow a Markovian arrival process (MAP) which is weakly dense in the class of the stationary point processes. By using the embedded Markov chain method we obtain the probability distribution of the system state at a token generation epoch and an arbitrary time. Some simple numerical examples also are provided to show the effects of the proposed LB scheme.
