In the generalized characteristic coordinate system (GCCS) proposed by Wu and Shi [1], the frame moves at a speed which is a linear combination of the convective speed and the sound speed, thus unifying the classical Eulerian approach, Lagrangian approach, and the unified coordinate system (UCS) of Hui and his co-workers [2]. Here some properties of Euler equations in the GCCS are studied and the advantages of GCCS in capturing expansion fans and shock waves are demonstrated by the results of numerical tests.
A reliable wind speed forecasting method is crucial for the applications in wind engineering. In this study, the generalized S-transform (GST) is innovatively applied for wind speed forecasting to uncover the time-frequency characteristics in the non-stationary wind speed data. The improved grey wolf optimizer (IGWO) is employed to optimize the adjustable parameters of GST to obtain the best time-frequency resolution. Then a hybrid method based on IGWO-optimized GST is proposed to validate the effectiveness and superiority for multi-step non-stationary wind speed forecasting. The historical wind speed is chosen as the first input feature, while the dynamic time-frequency characteristics obtained by IGWO-optimized GST are chosen as the second input feature. Comparative experiment with six competitors is conducted to demonstrate the best performance of the proposed method in terms of prediction accuracy and stability. The superiority of the GST compared to other time-frequency analysis methods is also discussed by another experiment. It can be concluded that the introduction of IGWO-optimized GST can deeply exploit the time-frequency characteristics and effectively improving the prediction accuracy.
The generalized extreme value distribution (GEVD) is frequently used to fit the block maximum of environmental parameters such as the annual maximum wind speed. There are several methods for estimating the parameters of the GEV distribution, including the least-squares method (LSM). However, the application of the LSM with the expected order statistics has not been reported. This study fills this gap by proposing a fitting method based on the expected order statistics. The study also proposes a plotting position to approximate the expected order statistics; the proposed plotting position depends on the distribution shape parameter. The use of this approximation for distribution fitting is carried out. Simulation analysis results indicate that the developed fitting procedure based on the expected order statistics or its approximation for GEVD is effective for estimating the distribution parameters and quantiles. The values of the probability plotting correlation coefficient that may be used to test the distributional hypothesis are calculated and presented. The developed fitting method is applied to extreme thunderstorm and non-thunderstorm winds for several major cities in Canada. Also, the implication of using the GEVD and Gumbel distribution to model the extreme wind speed on the structural reliability is presented and elaborated.

In this paper, a current hysteresis control with good decoupling properties for doubly-fed brushless induction machines (BDFIMs) has been proposed based on a generalized vector model. The independent control of the reactive power and speed for BDFIMs has been achieved by controlling the d-axis and the q-axis current of the control windings (CW). The proposed vector control method has been developed for the power winding (PW) flux frame. Experimental verification of a type Y180M-4 BDFIM prototype with 1/4 pole-pairs has been presented. Evidence of its good performance has been shown through experimental results.

In this paper, a generalized guidance law with an arbitrary pair of guidance coefficients for impact angle control is proposed. Under the assumptions of a stationary target and a lag-free missile with constant speed, necessary conditions for the guidance coefficients to satisfy the required terminal constraints are obtained by deriving an explicit closed-form solution. Moreover, optimality of the generalized impact-angle control guidance law is discussed. By solving an inverse optimal control problem for the guidance law, it is found that the generalized guidance law can minimize a certain quadratic performance index. Finally, analytic solutions of the generalized guidance law for a first-order lag system are investigated. By solving a third-order linear time-varying ordinary differential equation, the blowing-up phenomenon of the guidance loop as the missile approaches the target is mathematically proved. Moreover, it is found that terminal misses due to the system lag are expressed in terms of the guidance coefficients, homing geometry, and the ratio of time-to-go to system time constant.

Extreme wind speed analysis has been carried out conventionally by assuming the extreme series data is stationary. However, time-varying trends of the extreme wind speed series could be detected at many surface meteorological stations in China. Two main reasons, exposure change and climate change, were provided to explain the temporal trends of daily maximum wind speed and annual maximum wind speed series data, recorded at Hangzhou (China) meteorological station. After making a correction on wind speed series for time varying exposure, it is necessary to perform non-stationary statistical modeling on the corrected extreme wind speed data series in addition to the classical extreme value analysis. The generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution with time-dependent location and scale parameters was selected as a non-stationary model to describe the corrected extreme wind speed series. The obtained non-stationary extreme value models were then used to estimate the non-stationary extreme wind speed quantiles with various mean recurrence intervals (MRIs) considering changing climate, and compared to the corresponding stationary ones with various MRIs for the Hangzhou area in China. The results indicate that the non-stationary property or dependence of extreme wind speed data should be carefully evaluated and reflected in the determination of design wind speeds.
In a transmission or geared rotor system a coupled phenomenon of lateral and torsional vibrations may occur due to the gear meshing effect. Particularly, in high speed or low vibration and low noise applications of geared rotor systems a coupled rotordynamic analysis is required to precisely predict their dynamic characteristics. In this paper a generalized finite element model of a gear pair element is developed, which actively couples the lateral and torsional vibrations due to the gear meshing effect. In the modeling the generalized forces due to the transmission error. geometrical eccentricities. and unbalances in the gear system are also considered. Then. using the developed gear pair element model a coupled unforced rotordynamic analysis is performed with a prototype 800 RT turbo-chiller rotor-bearing system having a hull-pinion speed increasing gear. Results show that the torsional vibration characteristics experience some changes due to the gear meshing and lateral dynamic coupling effect, but that they have no adverse effect and the lateral ones have no practical changes in an operating speed range.
This paper presents a stability analysis of AC-DC power system feeding a speed controlled DC motor in which this load behaves as a constant power load (CPL). A CPL can significantly degrade power system stability margin. Hence, the stability analysis is very important. The DQ and generalized state-space averaging methods are used to derive the mathematical model suitable for stability issues. The paper analyzes the stability of power systems for both speed control natural frequency and DC-link parameter variations and takes into account controlled speed motor dynamics. However, accurate DC-link filter and DC motor parameters are very important for the stability study of practical systems. According to the measurement errors and a large variation in a DC-link capacitor value, the system identification is needed to provide the accurate parameters. Therefore, the paper also presents the identification of system parameters using the adaptive Tabu search technique. The stability margins can be then predicted via the eigenvalue theorem with the resulting dynamic model. The intensive time-domain simulations and experimental results are used to support the theoretical results.
Many works have been done in classical theory of thermoelasticity in materials with memory by researchers like Nunziato, Chen and Gurtine and many others. No work is located in generalized thermoelasticity regarding materials with memory till date. The present paper deals with the wave propagation in materials with memory in generalized thermoelasticity. Plane progressive waves and Rayleigh waves have been discussed in details. In the classical theory of heat conduction it was observed that heat propagates with infinite speed. This paradox has been removed in the present discussion. The set of governing equations has been developed in the present analysis. The results of wave velocity and attenuation coefficient corresponding to low and high frequency have been obtained. For thermal wave the results show appreciable differences with those in the usual thermoelasticity theory.
Locating reinforcing bars, in particular to know their accurate depths, is very important in radar inspection of concrete structures. By the way, an accurate depth estimation of reinforcing bars in concrete structures by the radar is not easy because the microwave propagation velocity in test area is generally unknown. This problem can be solved by generalized Hough transformation technique. Using this technique, the microwave propagation velocity in test area can be detected from the radar image, which appear as hyperbolas conveying the velocity information in their shape. A developed speed-up technique for the computation of the Generalized Hough transformation is also investigated in this study. As a result, although it becomes difficult to locate reinforcing bars when multiple parallel bars lying too close together, there is a possibility of detecting accurate depths of reinforcing bars in test area by the proposed method
