This paper describes the heat distribution characteristics of ASTM A131DH36 high tensile steel for ship structures in 5㎾ $CO_2$ laser welding. In general, high energy of laser beam concentrates on the small area of the weldment instantaneously; therefore, this heat transfer mechanism induces the rapid changes of temperature and mechanical characteristics in laser welds this mechanism. So temperature distribution analysis is important to understand mechanical characteristics of laser welds. Authors have conducted finite element simulation to analyze the heat distribution characteristics in laser welds. The result of simulation has been verified by comparing with the metallurgical experiment result. From the result of this study, we can accurately predict the heat distribution characteristics in laser welds by using numerical simulation.

Hastelloy C-276 composed of Cr, Mo, and Ni is a versatile, corrosion-resistant alloy with numerous industrial applications including its use in nuclear reactors, general chemical plants, and as a superconducting base material. Of especial significance, it can be used as a thin-sheet type whereby lap-joint welding is occasionally necessary. The main welding problems for thin-sheet metals are deformation and burn-through from an excessive heat input. Laser welding can minimize these problems because it has a high energy density and low heat effect on the base material. In this study, the laser-welding characteristics of lap-joint Hastelloy C-276 sheet metal were determined. The criteria of the laser-welding variables were chosen using a heat-conduction analysis, and the optimal welding parameters were selected by experimenting with an Nd:YAG laser.
Joint strength of spot friction welded 5J32 Al alloy were investigated according to the tool shape and the tool penetration depth. General spot friction stir welding tool consists of a shoulder having bigger diameter and a threaded pin projected from the shoulder, which resulted in the generation of large up-lifting of upper plate around the weld nugget because of the deeper penetration and the severe stirring effect of threaded pin. Two kinds of welding tools without the threaded pin were used to avoid the distortion and improve the joint strength. One was a simple cylindrical shape and the other was cylindrical shape with small projection. Therefore, the process was named as spot friction welding comparing to spot friction stir welding because spot friction welding don't use a stirring effect. Using the cylindrical shape tool with small projection, the up-lifting of upper plate were avoided and joint strength were superior to that of the joint using simple cylindrical shape tool. At the 0.5mm of too penetration depth using cylindrical tool with small projection, nugget pull fracture mode can be observed and shear fracture mode were dominant at the rest conditions.
The Gas Metal Arc(GMA) welding, called Metal Inert Gas(MIG) welding, has been an important component in manufacturing industries. A key technology for robotic welding processes is seam tracking system, which is critical to improve the welding quality and welding capacities. The objectives of this study were to develop the intelligent and cost-effective algorithms for image processing in GMA welding which based on the laser vision sensor. Welding images were captured from the CCD camera and then processed by the proposed algorithm to track the weld joint location. The proposed algorithms that commonly used at the present stage were verified and compared to obtain the optimal one for each step in image processing. Finally, validity of the proposed algorithms was examined by using weld seam images obtained with different welding environments for image processing. The results proved that the proposed algorithm was quite excellent in getting rid of the variable noises to extract the feature points and centerline for seam tracking in GMA welding and could be employed for general industrial application.
The automotive vehicle is made through the following processes such as press shop, welding shop, paint shop, and general assembly. Among them, the most important process to determine the quality of the car body is the welding process. Generally, more than 400 pressed panels are welded to make BIW (Body In White) by using the RSW (Resistance Spot Welding) and GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding). Recently, as the needs of light-weight material due to the $CO_2$ emission issue and fuel efficiency, new joining technologies for aluminum, CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) and etc. are needed. Aluminum parts are assembled by the spot welding, clinching, and SPR (Self Piercing Rivet) and friction stir welding process. Structural adhesive boning is another main joining method for light-weight materials. For example, one piece aluminum shock absorber housing part is made by die casting process and is assembled with conventional steel part by SPR and adhesive bond. Another way to reduce the amount of the car body weight is to use AHSS (Advanced High Strength Steel) panel including hot stamping boron alloyed steel. As the new materials are introduced to car body joining, productivity and quality have become more critical. Productivity improvement technology and adaptive welding control are essential technology for the future manufacturing environment.
Laser welding was carried out on austenitic 304 (STS 304) and 22 APU stainless steels. In this case, the differences between the corrosion characteristics of the welding zones of the two stainless steels were investigated using electrochemical methods. The Vickers hardness values of the weld metal (WM) zones in both cases, the STS 304 and 22 APU stainless steels, showed relatively higher values than those of other welding zones. The corrosion current densities of the heat affected zone (HAZ) of the 22 APU and the base metal (BM) zone of the STS 304 exhibited the highest values compared to the other welding zones. It is generally accepted that when STS 304 stainless steel is welded using a general welding method, intergranular corrosion is often observed at the grain boundary because of its chromium depletion area. However, when laser welding was performed on both the STS 304 and 22 APU stainless steels, no intergranular corrosion was observed at any of the welding zones. Consequently, it is considered that the intergranular corrosion of stainless steel can be controlled with the application of laser welding.
The purpose of this study is to assess the accurate state of the following: total welding fumes versus welding fumes in the air, respirable particulate mass, and exposure of dockyard welders to heavy metals. In addition, this study provides basic data for proposing improvements to create efficient and appropriate welding environments and to prevent occupational diseases. The subjects of this study were 94 laborers who worked at the block construction sites of large-scale dockyards located in Gyeongnam Province from March 2005 to June 2005. In order to collect samples on total welding fumes in the air and respirable particulate mass from the welders, Methods 0500 and 0600, established by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), were used. The metals within the welding fumes were also analyzed using Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) under Method 7300 from NIOSH. The results of this research are summarized below. The geometric mean concentration of total welding fumes and that of respirable particulate mass were $4.11\;mg/m^3\;and\;3.53\;mg/m^3$, respectively. As a result of comparing the two measurement methods, there were significant differences (p<0.05) between the two groups for Ca, Cu, Cr, and Ni; however, there were no differences in Fe, Mg, Zn, Mg, Pb, and Cd. As a result of the analysis, the correlation between Mn and the concentration of heavy metals in the total welding fumes and respirable particulate mass was found to be -0.29, a significant negative correlation. The correlation between other heavy metals, however, was low. Finally, in the same total welding fumes, the correlation of Fe and Mg was high.
As the nuclear power plant has been constructed continuously for several decades in Korea, the welding technology for components manufacturing and installation has been improved largely. Standardization for weld test and qualification was also established systematically according to the concerned code. The welding for the main components requires the high reliability to keep the constant quality level, which means the repeatability of weld quality. Therefore the weld process qualified by thorough test and evaluation is able to be applied for manufacturing. Narrow gap SAW and GTAW process are usually applied for girth seam welding of pressure vessel like Reactor vessel, steam generator, and etc. For the surface cladding with stainless steel and Inconel material, strip welding process is mainly used. Inside cladding of nozzles is additionally applied with Hot wire GTAW and semi-auto welding process. Especially the weld joint having elliptical weld line on curved surface needs a specialized weld system which is automatically rotating with adjusting position of the head torch. The small sized pipe, tube, and internal parts of reactor vessel requests precise weld processes like an automatic GTAW and electron beam welding. Welding of dissimilar materials including Inconel690 material has high possibility of weld defects like a lack of fusion, various types of crack. To avoid these kinds of problem, optimum weld parameters and sequence should be set up through the many tests. As the life extension of nuclear power plant is general trend, weld technologies having higher reliability is required gradually. More development of specialized welding systems, weld part analysis and evaluation, and life prediction for main components should be taken into a consideration extensively.

The determination of assembly sequence in general mechanical assemblies plays an important role in terms of manufacturing cost, duration and quality. In the production of ships and offshore plants, the consideration of productivity factors and welding deformation is crucial in determining the optimal assembly sequence. In shipbuilding and offshore industries, most assembly sequence planning has been done according to engineers' decisions based on extensive experience. This may result in error-prone planning and sub-optimal sequence, especially when dealing with unfamiliar block assemblies composed of dozens of parts. This paper presents an assembly sequence planning method for block assemblies. The proposed method basically considers geometric characteristics of blocks to determine feasible assembly sequences, as well as assembly process and productivity factors. Then the assembly sequence with minimal welding deformation is selected based on simplified welding distortion analysis. The method is validated using an asymmetric assembly model and the results indicate that it is capable of generating an optimal assembly sequence.

In laser welding, automatic seam tracking is important to adjust the laser head position in real time as it moves along the seam. Also if the joint gap is occurred, filling the missing material into the joint gap is necessary to prevent welding defects and bad welding quality. In general, the joint gap width is not constant along the seam due to a variety of reason. So it is essential to control the filler wire speed into the joint gap to acquire good welding quality. This paper describes an intelligent filler wire feeding device which can control 3-dimensional seam tracking and the filler wire speed by measuring the gap position and the joint gap width in laser welding. We call this device as Smart Micro Control system(SMC). To achieve this objective, we assessed weld quality in 2mm sheets of A16061 which had various gap width by using the developed device. From the experimental results, It was found the possibility that the developed device could be used in welding various 3-dimensional structures.
