  • The ultimate goal of women's studies and feminist critics is to improve the understanding on women and recognize women's values. When we examine the Korean women's history on the viewpoint of gender, we can find that the gender role is not fixed. We do not have any proofs that there are any kinds of gaps between women and men in ability and temperament. All of women's identity and subjectivity in status and activities was not insignificant. Especially women's subjectivity in high social standing was superior. The women's activities in economic area were energetically. The productive activities were lively, too. The patrilineal decent is usual in Chana though China is in the same Confucianism cultural area. But patrilineal and matrilineal decent were popular used until the early days in Chosun Dynasty. Only sons can be inherited father's estate in China but it's not in our country. Also the patriarch had the economic power in family in China but the housewives had the power in ours. The feminism has been making efforts for the equality of sexes and the dismantling of the patriarchal sex role for a long time. Every feminist activities included feminist theory and cultural criticism has the goal to increase women's liberty and equality and change the world. This study to understand the historical substance of Korean women is on the way, too.

  • This study is a qualitative study using phenomenological methods that focus on the meaning of what individuals experience to understand the meaning of the gender role of women after childbirth. The participants of this study are 17 women who gave a birth from 8 weeks of the postpartum period to a year after the birth. Seven categories were derived from the results of analyzing the meaning of the gender roles of participants, and the seven categories are confirmed to be body changes and pain, just making me feel down, the difference between expectation and reality, isolation from husband and social network, thinking about my mother as a woman, the pain of body and mind sublimates, and convergence/dissociation between femininity and motherhood. This study is meaningful in that the results of this study provided information that would have a broader understanding of women's gender role after giving birth.

  • Playwright Eugene O'Neill's expressionistic text-based approach to The Emperor Jones, with an emphasis on fixity, was at odds with African American actor Charles Gilpin's improvisational performance technique, stressing rupture, spontaneity, and discontinuity. The contemporary avant-garde performance troupe The Wooster Group likewise produces subversive and interrogative forms of identity in performing the play, which challenge the normative approach to gender, race, and an imagined orientation. The historical foundation of subversion and destabilization laid by O'Neill and Gilpin were manifold in the Wooster Group's production of The Emperor Jones, and not only formed a backdrop to it but also played a central role in the group's representation of race and even gender on the stage. In this essay, I use O'Neill's play, The Emperor Jones, a crucial example of racialized fantasies of identification, to explore how the modernist stage through the performances of Gilpin and The Wooster Group constructed racialized subjects of both its performers and audiences. Gilpin and the Wooster Group's strategies each shared a similar complexity in the portrayal of black identity in performance. Offering an examination of how ideologies of race and gender overlap in The Emperor Jones, I hope to show how each performance signifies a range of subversions and differences simultaneously and sometimes oppositionally that needs to be explored both holistically and in detail to offer a fuller picture of these remarkable attempts. Through this approach, I examine Gilpin's creative adaptations of O'Neill's text and illuminate how it is that the Wooster Group's appropriative use of blackface in their performance has come to gain critical acceptance.

The subjects of this study were male nursing students enrolled in three universities located in D metropolitan city from March 2 to April 30, 2020. The SPSS 22.0 program was used for data analysis, frequency and percentage, mean and standard deviation, correlation analysis, t-test, and ANOVA. As a result, the average of the gender role conflict among male nursing college students was 3.70±0.43 points. The major satisfaction level was 2.84±0.24 points, and the college life adaptation was 2.49±0.28. The characteristics of the variables according to general characteristics showed that gender role conflict was significantly related to age; major satisfaction was significantly related to age and type of residence, and college life adaptation was significant according to age and military service. Based on the above results, it is necessary to establish positive professional intuition as a way to increase the adaptation of male nursing students to college life and to develop programs actively to reduce gender role conflict and increase the major satisfaction by promoting awareness related to sexual identity.

  • Various current events provide evidence that society is undergoing changes in perceptions of social relationships. Specifically, visual media in the form of advertisements can convey images which reflect society's values and concepts about role relationships. The purpose of this research was to examine ads in fashion magazines to determine what types of model roles and role relationships typically appear in fashion advertising which can mirror society's values. A content analysis was conducted of ads obtained from US Vogue and US GQ for the year 2002. Six kinds of roles/relationships were found: (1) Narcissism (representing self absorption), (2) sexually enticing opposite-sex relationships, (3) close/romantic same-sex relationships, (4) friend relationships, (5) family relationships, and (6) independent relationships. Of these, narcissism predominated, however, a small number of sexually provocative ads appeared as well as same-sex romantic relationships. Because sole (single) models were more typical, they also were examined to determine ways in which they relate to the audience. Characteristics examined included body presentation & pose, eye gaze, and facial expression. Direct eye gaze was the typical way to engage the audience. Gender differences were apparent: smiling was more typical of women, indifference for men. The symbolic meaning and values investigated from this research are the blurring of gender identity portrayed in homosexual imagery, family values, and the value of youth. The consistency of models' race in ads does not portray the diversity reflected in the demographic census.

This study was conducted to investigate the attitude toward marriage, gender role and having children among college students, and to identify the factors affecting marriage. The participants were 383 unmarried nursing college students who live in D city. Data were collected from self-report questionnaires and analyzed using the t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression using the SPSS 22.0 program. Gender was a significant variable influencing attitude toward marriage. Moreover, the attitude toward marriage was negatively correlated with gender role, and positively correlated with having children. Attitude toward gender role was negatively correlated with having children. Regression analysis of the factors affecting attitude toward marriage showed that gender (male), attitude toward gender role, and attitude toward having children were significant influencing factors. Moreover, this model explained 51.9% of variance in attitude toward marriage. Overall, it is necessary to change individual values to solve the problem of low birthrate.

  • Women's educational opportunities have been increasing and women's general advancement in higher education is the underlying factor behind the increasing number of female students in medical school. A number of issues affect female students and residents, including the existence of gender bias and sexual harassment, higher stress levels and lower levels of work satisfaction, the lack of role models in academic medicine, and conflict between work and family roles, including challenges surrounding having children. To what extent female and male medical students and residents make different career and life style choices is also an important issue. The shortage of doctors in surgical departments and maldistribution among specialties are of great concern in the health care system and medicine's future. We must prepare to solve these problems. New medical policies and educational approaches are needed for the future.
