  • The detection of skin pigment is crucial in the diagnosis of skin diseases and in the evaluation of medical cosmetics and hairdressing. Accuracy in the detection is a basis for the prompt cure of skin diseases. This study presents a method to recognize and measure human skin pigment using Hemoglobin-Melanin (HM) coordinate. The proposed method extracts the skin area through a Gaussian skin-color model estimated from statistical analysis and decomposes the skin area into two pigments of hemoglobin and melanin using an Independent Component Analysis (ICA) algorithm. Then, we divide the two-dimensional (2D) HM coordinate into rectangular bins and compute the location histograms of hemoglobin and melanin for all the bins. We label the skin pigment of hemoglobin, melanin, and normal skin on all bins according to the Bayesian classifier. These bin-based HM projective histograms can quantify the skin pigment and compute the standard deviation on the total quantification of skin pigments surrounding normal skin. We tested our scheme using images taken under different illumination conditions. Several cosmetic coverings were used to test the performance of the proposed method. The experimental results show that the proposed method can detect skin pigments with more accuracy and evaluate cosmetic covering effects more effectively than conventional methods.

  • It is necessary to detect the feature points existing simultaneously in both images and then find the corresponding relationship between the detected feature points. We propose a new feature detector based on geometric mean of two eigenvalues of gradient matrix which is able to measure the change of pixel intensities. The corner response of the proposed detector is proportional to the geometric mean and also the difference of two eigenvalues in the case of same geometric mean. We analyzed the localization error of the feature detection using aerial image and artificial image with various types of corners. The localization error of the proposed detector was smaller than that of the typical corner detector, Harris detector.

  • In this paper, as a new category of fuzzy-neural networks architecture, we propose Fuzzy Polynomial Neural Networks (FPNN) and discuss a comprehensive design methodology related to its architecture. FPNN dwells on the ideas of fuzzy rule-based computing and neural networks. The FPNN architecture consists of layers with activation nodes based on fuzzy inference rules. Here each activation node is presented as Fuzzy Polynomial Neuron(FPN). The conclusion part of the rules, especially the regression polynomial, uses several types of high-order polynomials such as linear, quadratic and modified quadratic. As the premise part of the rules, both triangular and Gaussian-like membership functions are studied. It is worth stressing that the number of the layers and the nods in each layer of the FPNN are not predetermined, unlike in the case of the popular multilayer perceptron structure, but these are generated in a dynamic manner. With the aid of two representative time series process data, a detailed design procedure is discussed, and the stability is introduced as a measure of stability of the model for the comparative analysis of various architectures.

  • Reliability analysis is a probabilistic approach to determine a safety level of a system. Reliability is defined as a probability of a system (or a structure, in structural engineering) to functionally perform under given conditions. In the 1960s, Basler defined the reliability index as a measure to elucidate the safety level of the system, which until today is a commonly used parameter. However, the reliability index has been formulated based on the pivotal assumption which assumed that the considered limit state function is normally distributed. Nevertheless, it is not guaranteed that the limit state function of systems follow as normal distributions; therefore, there is a need to define a new reliability index for no-normal distributions. The main contribution of this paper is to define a sophisticated reliability index for limit state functions which their distributions are non-normal. To do so, the new definition of reliability index is introduced for non-normal limit state functions according to the probability functions which are calculated based on the convolution theory. Eventually, as the state of the art, this paper introduces a simplified method to calculate the reliability index for non-normal distributions. The simplified method is developed to generate non-normal limit state in terms of normal distributions using series of Gaussian functions.

  • This study was performed to measure gaseous Organochlorine Pesticides (OCPs : heptachlor epoxide, ${\alpha}/{\gamma}-chlordane$, trans-nonachlor, endosulfan, ${\gamma}-HCH$ and p, p'-DDE) concentration using PUF high volume sampler from June, 2000 to June, 2002 in the semi-rural atmosphere. Using monitoring data for two years, we tried to investigate the annual cycles of gaseous OCPs. We considered three functions to describe the annual cycle: Gaussian, Lorentzian and sinusoidal functions. These functions accounted for $54{\sim}91%$ of the variability in concentration for each gaseous OCPs, and the sinusoidal function gave the best fits. It was seen that the gaseous OCPs concentration increased during the warmer weather while decreased during colder weather. The variation of the gaseous OCPs concentration was closely similar to the variations of ambient temperature. The annual cycle of endosulfan was strongly higher than in comparison with other gaseous OCPs, while for ${\gamma}-HCH$, the cycle was weakly high and did not show apparent seasonal variation. The position of the annual maximum exists generally late July to early August. The period that showed levels more than a half maximum was from late June to early September.

  • It is well known that Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems offer the promise of achieving very high spectrum efficiencies (many tens of bit/s/Hz) in a mobile environment. The gains in MIMO capacity are sensitive to the presence of spatial and temporal correlation introduced by the radio environment. In this paper, we examine how MIMO capacity is influenced by a number of factors e.g., a) temporal correlation b) various combinations of low/high spatial correlations at either end, c) combined spatial and temporal correlations. In all cases, we compare the channel capacity that would be achievable under independent fading. We investigate the behaviour of "capacity fades," examine how often the capacity experiences the fades, develop a method to determine level crossing rates and average fade durations and relate these to antenna numbers. We also evaluate the influence of channel correlation on the capacity autocorrelation and assess the fit of a Gaussian random process to the temporal capacity sequence. Finally we note that the particular spatial correlation structure of the MIMO channel is influenced by a large number of factors. For simplicity, it is desirable to use a single overall correlation measure which parameterizes the effect of correlation on capacity. We verify this single parameter concept by simulating a large number of different spatially correlated channels.

  • In this paper, we propose an image registration method by optimization of mutual information to provide a significant infonnation from multimodality images. The method applies mutual infonnation to measure the statistical dependency'r information redundancy between the image intensities of corresponding pixels in both images, which is assumed to be maximal if the images are geometrically aligned. We show the registration results optimizing mutual information between brain MR image and brain CT image and the comparison results with additive gaussian noise. Since our method uses the native image rather than prior segmentation or feature extraction, no user interaction is required and the accuracy of registration is improved. In addition, it shows the robustness against the noise.

  • In pattern classification, the Bhattacharyya distance has been used as a class separability measure. Furthemore, it is recently reported that the Bhattacharyya distance can be used to estimate error of Gaussian ML classifier within 1-2% margin. In this paper, we propose a feature extraction method utilizing the Bhattacharyya distance. In the proposed method, we first predict the classification error with the error estimation equation based on the Bhauacharyya distance. Then we find the feature vector that minimizes the classification error using two search algorithms: sequential search and global search. Experimental reslts show that the proposed method compares favorably with conventional feature extraction methods. In addition, it is possible to determine how man, feature vectors arc needed for achieving the same classification accuracy as in the original space.

  • In robust design, the mean and variance of design performance are frequently used to measure the design performance and its robustness under uncertainties. In this paper, we present the Gauss-type quadrature formula as a rigorous method for mean and variance estimation involving arbitrary input distributions and further extend its use to robust design optimization. One dimensional Gauss-type quadrature formula are constructed from the input probability distributions and utilized in the construction of multidimensional quadrature formula such as the tensor product quadrature (TPQ) formula and the univariate dimension reduction (UDR) method. To improve the efficiency of using it for robust design optimization, a semi-analytic design sensitivity analysis with respect to the statistical moments is proposed. The proposed approach is applied to a simple bench mark problems and robust topology optimization of structures considering various types of uncertainty.
