Recently, the necessity for more accurate automatic gauge control has increased of customers' requirement for cold rolled steel sheets with thinner gauge and better gauge quality. Therefore, many cold rolling mills replaced its electric screw down automatic gauge control system with a new hydraulic automatic gauge control system, to ensure closer gauge tolerance. In this paper, The performance of a hydraulic automatic gauge control system for cold rolling has been investigated under industrial conditions. It was investigated that variation of gauge deviation according to the final products thickness, cold rolling speed and pass number, in the actual rolling mill. As a result, it was found that the system enables strip thickness variation to be reduced substantially and caused by poor gauge deviation have been drastically decreased. The test results are as following. The more the exit steel strip thickness is thick, the smaller the aguge deviation rate is large, and the more it is thin, the large the gauge deviation rate is large. Because the gauge deviation is larger at accleration speed and deceleration speed than steady speed, so automatic gauge control system is better to adopt over 50m/min. automatic gauge control system reduces rapidly large thickness deviation.

This test was performed on the hydraulic automatic gauge control(AGC) system of adaptive mass flow method. Fundamental purpose of this study are performance evaluation of this AGC system under the actual rolling condition. It was concluded that the response of AGC system depends on the dynamic characteristics of a reel motor or roll position. The test results are as follows : 1) The control method of reel motor current is better than than of the roll position as AGC system. 2) The more steel strip thickness of delivery side is thick, the larger the gauge deviation is large, and the more it is thin, the larger the gauge deviation rate is large. 3) Because the gauge deviation is large at acceleration and deceleration speed than steady speed, so AGC system is better to adopt over 50m/min. By applying this AGC system, not only the accurary in strip thickness were improved but also productivity was improved dramatically.
A diagnosis methodology for thickness quality in hot finishing mill is proposed based on multivariate statistical analysis. The thickness of hot strip is a key quality factor that is measured by x-ray thickness gauge. Currently, the thickness quality is guaranteed by upper and lower limit of thickness deviation from target thickness. But if any over-limit is occurred, there is no in-line method to identify the causes. In this paper, many parameters are extracted from the thickness deviation signal such as mean deviation(top, middle, tail), rms deviation(top, middle, tail) and peak deviation(top, middle, tail) as time domain parameters ...

A simulation of hot strip finishing mill automatic gauge control (AGC) system is built, which is divided into four modules such as rolling mill system, AGC module, looper system and strip model. The rolling mill system is built by mechanism modeling, the looper system and strip model are built by function modeling, and the AGC model is tried to use intelligent control of a multi-function AGC system. The target is attempted to use this simulation object to minimize finisher exit strip thickness deviation resulting from strip entry thickness disturbance and rolling force deviation. Simulation results show that the result of this AGC/LPC synthetical system module simulation is quite close to the actual result. The simulation system can also analyze most kinds of disturbance which affect the rolling process. It is proved that the system can represent practical situation of hot strip finishing mill process control, and be used as a basic platform of research and development for researcher and engineer.

The plate manufacturing processes are composed of the reheating furnace, finishing mill, cooling process and hot leveling. The finishing rolling mill (FM) as a reversing mill has produced the plate steel through multiple pass rolling. The automatic gauge control (AGC) is employed to maintain the thickness tolerance. The high grade products are forming greater parts of the manufacturing and customers are requiring strict thickness margin. For this reason, the advanced AGC method is required instead of the conventional AGC based on the PI control. To overcome the slow response performance of the conventional AGC and the thickness measurement delay, a fuzzy AGC based on the thickness deviation and its trend is proposed in this paper. An embedded controller with the fuzzy AGC has been developed and implemented at the plate mill in POSCO. The fuzzy AGC has dynamically controlled the roll gap in real time with the programmable logic controller (PLC). On line tests have been performed for the general and TMCP products. As the results, the thickness deviation range (maximum - minimum of the inner plate) is averagely from 0.3 to 0.1 mm over the full length. The fuzzy AGC has improved thickness deviation and completely satisfied customer needs.
A new air knife system for coating thickness control in hot dip galvanizing process had been developed and installed on the CGL in Pohang Steel Works, POSCO. This new system consists of air knives with remotely adjustable nozzle slot and an automatic control system which can control both longitudinal and traverse coating deviations. Based on the optimal control algorithm, a traverse coating deviation control was designed. The controller controls the lip profile of the air knives with flexible structure according to the deviation of coating weight. From the measured values which are dependent on the strip width, the lip gaps are calculated with optimal algorithm and the model of the coating deviation. Time delay between knives and a coating thickness gauge is solved by the Smith Predictor.

Zinc wiping is a phenomenon used to control zinc-coating thickness on steel substrate during hot dip galvanizing by equipment called air knife. Uniformity of zinc coating weight in length and width profile along with surface quality are most critical quality parameters of galvanized steel. Deviation from tolerance level of coating thickness causes issues like overcoating (excess consumption of costly zinc) or undercoating leading to rejections due to non-compliance of customer requirement. Main contributor of deviation from target coating weight is dynamic change in air knives equipment setup when thickness, width, and type of substrate changes. Additionally, cold coating measurement gauge measure coating weight after solidification but are installed down the line from air knife resulting in delayed feedback. This study presents a coating weight control model (Galvantage) predicting critical air knife parameters air pressure, knife distance from strip and line speed for coating control. A reverse engineering approach is adopted to design a predictive, prescriptive, and descriptive model recommending air knife setups that estimate air knife distance and expected coating weight in real time. Implementation of this model eliminates feedback lag experienced due to location of coating gauge and achieving setup without trial-error by operator.
A health monitoring system becomes a useful tool to obtain information on long term behavior of the important railway structures such as very long span and special type bridges. The health monitoring system not only gives the direct measurement data of the railway bridges but also provides the basic data on the maintenance of the structures. Therefore, periodic calibrations of the health monitoring system will be a necessary step toward precise and accurate assessment of the railway bridges. In this study, the calibration and gauge factor readjustment process made for the health monitoring system installed in the railroad bridges is reviewed and some findings are explained in detail: specifically, the calibrators made for this purpose are illustrated and the regression processes of the calibration on long-term displacement using water level sensor, longitudinal displacement using LVDT sensor, instantaneous displacement using LVDT sensors and accelerometer are described in full length. Based on the regression results, it was found that the gauge factors need to be readjusted according to the regression equation but, since the deviation or shift is not serious so far, long-term observation on each sensor is also recommended. Future work will be concentrated on the long-term analysis of each sensor and on the database creation so that the assessment of the structures is possible.

In this study, the hydration heat differential method was applied to mass concrete structures, and the hydration heat analysis was compared and analyzed with on-site measurement results. The results showed that the temperature history measurements of mass concrete were managed at a difference of 8.4 ℃, and although there was some deviation in thermal stress, a similar trend was observed. Consequently, it was determined that the thermal stress on the surface of mass concrete is less than its tensile strength, which would prevent the occurrence of thermal cracks.
This paper deals with developmeant and application of coating thickness control system in hot dip galvanizing process. According to the line conditions, such as line speed, strip size and target coating weight, a predictive preset model sets the initial oprating conditions. Referring the zine coating informations from the gauge, mean coating value controller adjusts the chamber pressure and horizontal distance between strip and air knife, while coating deviation controller adjusts the lip gap profile of the air knife. All adaptive gains are interactively calculated by numeric models based on the theoretical analysis. The operating result with this system effectively reduces the coating deviation in transverse direction as well as in longitudinal direction.
