  • This study was performed to evaluate the effect of the shrinkage stress induced by polymerization process of several light curing filling materials according to filling methods. High power light curing unit which has a plasma arc lamp was used and filling materials used were Filtek $Z-250^{(R)}$ composite resin, $Dyract^{(R)}$ AP compomer and $Tetric^{(R)}$ Flow flowable composite resin. Cavities were prepared on the permanent molars with width 3 mm, height 3 mm and depth 1.5 mm and the filling materials were filled with 1 step, 2 step layering technique and 3 step oblique filling methods. The results can be summarized as follows; 1. Strain values showed rapid increase from the start of light curing followed by gradual decrease afterwards with time. 2. Although the shrinkage stress value of $Z-250^{(R)}$ were shown to be relatively higher than $Dyract^{(R)}$ AP and $Tetric^{(R)}$ Flow, no statistically significant could be found between tested materials(p>0.05). 3. There were no statistically significant difference between 3 filling methods when using $Dyract^{(R)}$ AP and $Z-250^{(R)}$(p>0.05). 4. There were no statistically significant difference between shrinkage stress values obtained from samples prepared by different filling methods and materials(p>0.05).

  • In Girder to measure the pressure and weight decrease of drying sample during the vacuum drying process of food, sensing devices were designed and constructed with strain gauge. Microcomputer based vacuum drying system was made up of these devices interfaced to apple II microcomputer. The electrical output signal from vacuum sensor which constituted with Bourdon tube whereon strain gauge attached were digitalized and input to microcomputer through the MC 6821 interface I.C. chip. The relationship between read-out digital value (D) from microcomputer and readings of vacuum gauge (P, mmHg) was P=-146.136+3.620D'(r=0.9994) The pressure control of vacuum dryer was successfully conducted in the range of $400{\sim}600\;mmHg$ accuracy. The digitalized load cell output (D) could be correlated with the real weight (W, g) as W=-14,000+0.585D (r=0.9998) Drying curves of green red pepper under $64^{\circ}C$, $400{\sim}600\;mmHg$ was similar to those of red pepper and differently affected by the degree of vacuum pressure but was varied according to their shape (cut or whole). Moisture movement of green red pepper during the vacuum drying process was fitted to Page model. The empirical equations obtained were $M-M_e/M_o-M_e={\exp}\;(-0.0673{\theta}^{1.177})$ and $M-M_e/M_o-M_e={\exp}\;(-0.0655\;{\theta}^{1.477})$ for whole and cut green red pepper, respectively.

  • A development in method of evaluating the measurement precisions using approximate F tests and variance components from expected mean square (EMS) is investigated. The research proposes three-factor mixed measurement models with the fixed and random factors. Unrestricted and unconstrained design work was rarely studied, while restricted and constrained designs have been significantly discussed. The unrestricted and unconstrained designs assume to be an independence of interaction. The proposed evaluation method about the measurement precisions can be extended to four-factor random measurement model or mixed measurement model. The study also presents the three evaluation indexes of precisions such as R&RTR (Reproducibility & Repeatability-To-Total Precision Ratio), PTR (Precision-To-Tolerance Ratio), and SNR (Signal-To-Noise Ratio). Numerical examples are proposed to evaluate the approximate F tests with Satterthwaite degrees of freedom and three indexes using the measurement precisions from EMS.

  • In this study, the effect of threshold applied to the radar rain rate on the comparison of the radar and rain gauge rain rate was theoretically examined. The result derived was also evaluated theoretically, using the Bernoulli random field, and empirically, using Mt. Kwanak weather radar data. The results are summarized as follows. (1) In the application to the Bernoulli random field, it was found that the comparison of the radar and rain gauge rain rate with threshold does not introduce any systematic bias. (2) The same results could also be derived in the application to Mt Kwanak weather radar data. In all cases with several radar bin sizes and thresholds considered, the bias was estimated to be far less than 10% of the mean of the rain gauge rain rate. (3) However, in the comparison with threshold applied to both the radar and rain gauge rain rate, the bias was estimated to be higher than 20%. That is, the systematic bias was introduced. This result indicates that the comparison with threshold applied to both the radar and rain gauge rain rate should not be used.

  • A defect which is axially oriented with small size is hard to detect in conventional system. CMFL(Cricumferential Magnetic Flus Leakage) type PIG(Pipelines Inspection Gauge) in the NDT(Nondestructive Testing), is operated to detect this defect called axially oriented cracks in the pipe. It is necessary to decompose the size and shapes of cracks for the manintenance of underground pipelines. This article is focused on the decomposing method of the size and shape of the axially oriented cracks by using inspection signal data for defect.

  • Ankyloglossia (tongue-tie) limits movement of the tongue connected with feeding and has adverse impacts on both dental health and speech. For the patients with ankyloglossia, surgical intervention is recommended as primary treatment. This study suggests the efficient tool in determining indicatory factors for frenulotomy by quantifying Maximum Lingual Length-Protrusion (MLL-P) with boley gauge, and as a preliminary study, to show the measurement results with normal children using the tool. The subjects were 61 normal children, and the distance (MLL-P) between mandibular central incisor and tongue tip during tongue protrusion was measured with a boley gauge (Digimatic $Caliper^{(R)}$). The results of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) The mean value of MLL-P (N=61 normal children) was 21.44 mm, (2) The mean value of MLL-P was 20.69 mm in males (N=33) and 21.91 mm in females (N=28). There was no statistically significant difference between males and females, (3) The mean value of MLL-P was 19.34 mm, 21.19 mm, 22.33 mm, 22.61 mm for measurement of 3-, 4-, 5- and 6-year-old children, respectively, and (4) The mean value of MLL-P showed statistically significant difference between 3- and 5-year-old children, between 3- and 6-year old children.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the polymerization contraction of composite resin(Tetric $ceram^{(R)}$, Ivoclar Vivadent Liechtenstein) according to various liners(Tetric $flow^{(R)}$, Ivoclar Vivadent, Liechtenstein/$Ionosit^{(R)}$, DMG, German/ $Vitrebond,^{TM}$ 3M-ESPE, USA). The strain gauge method was used for measurement of polymerization shrinkage strain. Specimens were divided by 8 groups according to curing units and liners. Group A, E: Tetric $ceram^{(R)}$ bulk filing, Group B, F: Tetric $flow^{(R)}$ lining, Tetric $ceram^{(R)}$ filling, Group C, G: $Ionosit^{(R)}$ lining, Tetric $ceram^{(R)}$ filling, Group D, H: $Vitrebond^{TM}$ lining, Tetric $ceram^{(R)}$ filling. Group A, B, C and D were cured using the conventional halogen light($XL3000^{TM}$ 3M ESPE, USA) for 40 seconds at $400mW/cm^2$. Group E, F G and H were cured using light emitted diode(LED) light(Elipar Freelight $2^{TM}$, 3M-ESPE, USA) for 15 seconds at 800 $mW/cm^2$. Strain gauge attached to each sample was connected to a strainmeter. Measurements were recorded at each second for the total of 750 seconds including the periods of light application. Obtained data were analyzed statistically using Repeated measures ANOVA and Tukey test. The results of this were as follows : 1. Contraction stresses in flowable resin and glass ionomer lining group were lower than that in compomer lining group(p<0.05). 2, Contraction stresses in LED curing light groups were higher than that in halogen curing light groups, but there was no significant difference (p>0.05).

  • New experimental devices and methods to measure shaft forces of ships are proposed in this paper. The strain gauge type six-component load cell was newly designed and installed to the end of the propeller shaft. The signals generated from the sensor in the propeller rotating are transferred to the new data amplifying and processing board on the shaft and the data is transmitted to the self-made wireless receiver. To find out the characteristics of shaft forces during port and starboard turning motions in sea trial, oblique and combined yaw maneuvering tests at straight, transient, maximum yaw rate, steady conditions were performed with the model ship installed the shaft forces measuring device using circular motion tester of Samsung Ship Model Basin. Characteristics of the measured shaft forces in model tests show quantitatively good agreement with the computed values obtained by the CFD programs using the measured wake data in oblique towing conditions. In the near future, It is hoped that the estimated shaft forces for a ship from this experimental method could be validated through comparison with directly measured values of a ship.
