  • A parallel slide gate valve (PSGV) is located between the heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and the steam turbine in a combined cycle power plant (CCPP). It is used to control the flow of steam and runs with repetitive operations such as startups, load changes, and shutdowns during its operation period. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the fatigue damage and the structural integrity under a large compressive thermal stress due to the temperature difference through the valve wall thickness during the startup operations. In this paper, the thermal-structural analysis and the fatigue life evaluation of a 16-inch PSGV, which is installed on the HP steam line, is performed according to the fatigue life assessment method described in the ASME B&PVC VIII-2; the method uses the equivalent stress from the elastic stress analysis.

  • Using the MPI (Moldflow Plastics Insight) software from Moldflow Co., the optimum conditions for producing the upper part of the automobile air cleaner were obtained for 20% talc filled polypropylene (PP). The analysis was carried out to solve the cracking problem between upper and lower parts and the improved process was proposed using the flow balance. The comparative results between the conventional process, CASE-1, with one-pin gate and the new process (CASE-2) comprising two-pin gate system are the followings. In the case of CASE-2, the shorter filling time and reduced cycle time induced an improved production and processibility. In addition, the orientation and volumetric shrinkage are similar to those observed in the lower part, but the assembly, deformation, and physical characteristics are enhanced. The problem induced by the CASE-1 did not originate from the residual stress, but from the difference in the size of the upper part air cleaner after shrinkage. Thus, the orientation problem was expected to improve by optimizing the gate structure.

  • This paper deals with CBS(Cycle Base Simulator) design of a 32 bit floating point DSP(Digital Signal Processor). The CBS has been developed for TMS320C30 compatible DSP and will be used to confirm the architecture, functions of sub-blocks, and control signals of the chip before the detailed logic design starts with VHDL. The outputs from CBS are used as important references at gate level design step because they give us control signals, output values of important blocks, values from internal buses and registers at each pipeline step, which are not available from the commercial simulator of DSP. In addition to core functions, it has various interfaces for efficient execution and convenient result display, CBS is verified through comparison with results from the commercial simulator for many application algorithms and its simulation speed is as fast as several tenth of that of logic simulation with VHDL. CBS in this work is for a specific DSP, but the concept may be applicable to other VLSI design.

  • Recently the dairy cow industry have faced environmental issues such as eutrophication, global warming, etc. An LCA was used to quantify the environmental impact of a dairy cow system and to identify key issues contributing to the impact. The system boundary crop cultivation for feeding dairy cow, feed production, rearing and manure management (cradle-to-gate). The functional unit was 1 kg of milk (fat protein corrected milk, FPCM) produced. Rearing and cultivation of feed crops stages in system boundary to the environmental impact of the domestic dairy cow system were dominant issues. Techniques such as suppression of enteric fermentation, improvement of the energy efficiency of farm equipment and apparatuses, management of leachate generated during the crop cultivation, and development of controling the loss of fertilizer during crop production would be necessary for the improvement of the environmental key issues of the dairy cow system.

  • In this paper, H.264 high profile intra frame encoder, which integrates intra prediction, context-based adaptive variable length coding(CAVLC), and DDR2 memory control module, is proposed. The designed encoder can be operated in 440 cycle for one-macroblock. In order to verify the encoder function, we developed the reference C from JM 13.2 and verified the developed hardware using test vector generated by reference C. The designed encoder is verified in the FPGA (field programmable gate array) with operating frequency of 200 MHz for DMA (direct memory access), operating frequency of 50 MHz of Encoder module, and 25 MHz for VIM(video input module). The number of LUT is 43099, which is about 20 % of Virtex 5 XC5VLX330.

  • Operating characteristics of a triple pressure reheat HRSG are analyzed using a commercial software package (Gate Cycle by GE Enter Software). The calculation routine determines all the design parameters including configuration and area of each heat exchanger. The off-design calculation part has the capability of simulating the effect of any operating parameters such as power load, process requirements, and operating mode, etc., on the transient performance of the plant. The arrangement of high-temperature and intermediate-temperature components of the HRSG is changed, and its effect on the steam turbine performance and HRSG characteristics is examined. It is shown that there could be a significant difference in HRSG sizes even though thermal performance is not in great deviation. From the viewpoint of both economics and steam turbine performance, it should be carefully reviewed whether the optimum design point could exist. Off-design performance could be one of the main factors in arranging components of the HRSG because power plants operate at various off-design conditions such as ambient temperature and gas turbine load, etc. It is shown that different heat exchanger configurations lead to different performances with ambient temperature, even though they have almost the same performances at design points.

  • This study presents detailed emission of greenhouse gases of using Clean Energy Agriculture System according to a cradle-to-gate life-cycle assessment, including emission from energy use and leak of Biogas. Calculations were done with the PASS software and the covered gases are $CH_4$, $N_2O$ and $CO_2$, Total GHG fluxes of amount to $1719.03kgCO_2/day$, $39.63kgCO_2/day$ (2.31%) are from facility house process, $0.19kgCO_2/day$ (0.01%) are from transport process, $696.72kgCO_2/day$ (40.53%) are from Anaerobic digestion process, $846.61kgCO_2/day$ (49.25%) are from Heating and cooling system, $135.88kgCO_2/day$ (7.90%) are from Fertigation production process. The results suggest that for effective reduction of GHG emissions from Facility house using clean energy. Reduction targets should address both the production process as defined by IPCC sectors and the consumption process. An LCA assessment as presented here could be a basis for such efforts.

  • In this paper, a novel prototype of auxiliary switched capacitor assisted voltage source soft switching PWM Single-Ended Push Pull (SEPP) series capacitor compensated load resonant inverter with two auxiliary edge resonant lossless inductor snubbers is proposed and discussed for small scale consumer high-frequency induction heating (IH) appliances. The operation principle of this inverter is described by using switching mode equivalent circuits. The newly developed multi resonant high-frequency inverter using trench gate IGBTs can regulate its output AC power via constant frequency edge-resonant associated soft switching commutation by using an asymmetrical PWM control or duty cycle control scheme. The brand-new consumer IH products which use the newly proposed edge-resonant soft switching PWM-SEPP type series load resonant high-frequency inverters are evaluated using power regulation characteristics, actual efficiency vs. duty cycle and input power vs. actual efficiency characteristics. Their operating performance compared with some conventional soft switching high-frequency inverters for IH appliances is discussed on the basis of simulation and experimental results. The practical effectiveness of the newly proposed soft switching PWM SEPP series load resonant inverter is verified from an application point of view as being suitable for consumer high-frequency IH appliances.
