  • Four cast iron pipe sections containing 3 styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) gaskets (1 joint and 2 end caps) were filled with water and maintained at approximately 40 psi internal pressure. The pipe sections were placed inside 16 gallon drums filled with initially clean sand. Three of the tanks were subsequently contaminated with gasoline, gasoline spiked with pyrene and naphthalene, and toluene. The forth tank served as a control. The water inside each pipe was monitored over time for organic chemical contamination. Permeation of organic chemicals into the water inside the pipe systems was found to occur in all 3 contaminated pipe systems after approximately 100 days as measured organic chemicals concentrations were significantly above those in the uncontaminated cell. Flushing experiments in which the water inside the contaminated pipes was replaced with initially clean water showed that organic chemical concentrations inside the pipe rapidly (12 days) reached their preflushing levels.

  • The one of the major problems in the development of PEMFC was regarding to the assurance of sealing on stack. The failure on the sealing creates the problems of fuel leakage, mixing, internal combustion, damage on parts and can be a direct reason for the degrading the efficiency of fuel cell. This paper studies on the analytical approach for improving the contacting pressure distribution on the gasket at the evaluation on the sealing of fuel cell stack. So, the assembly analysis on multi layered fuel cell stack was performed. The research on the simplification of finite element model was performed for three dimensional analysis at the multi layered state. The improved contact pressure distribution was obtained through the case studies on gasket for better sealing. In addition, the number of the cell was determined for the effective analysis and the structural characteristics were evaluated based on this research.

  • The present manuscript deals with the prediction of the lifetime of NBR compound based rubber gaskets for use as fuel cells. The material was investigated at 120, 140 and $160^{\circ}C$, with aging times from 3 to 600 h and increasing $H_2SO_4$ concentrations of 5, 6, 7 and 10 vol%. Both material and accelerated acid-heat aging tests were carried out to predict the useful life of the NBR rubber gasket for use as a fuel cell stack. To investigate the effects of acid-heat aging on the performance characteristics of the gaskets, the properties of the NBR rubber, such as crosslink density and elongation at break, were studied. The hardness of the NBR rubber was found to decrease with decreasing acid concentration at both $120\;and\;140^{\circ}C$, but at $160^{\circ}C$, the hardness of the NBR rubber increased abruptly in a very short time at different acid concentrations. The tensile strength and elongation at break were found to decrease with increases in both the $H_2SO_4$ concentration & temperature. The observed experimental results were evaluated using the Arrhenius equation.

  • The present paper reports the life time prediction of Acrylonitrile-Butadiene rubber (NBR) fuel cell gasket materials as a function of operational variables like acid concentration, ageing time and temperature. Both material and accelerated acid-heat aging tests were carried out to predict the useful life of the NBR rubber gasket for use as a fuel cell stack. The acid ageing of the gasket compounds has been investigated at 120, 140 and $160^{\circ}C$, with aging times from 3 to 600 h and increasing acid ($H_2SO_4$) concentrations of 5, 6, 7 and 10 vol%. Material characteristics the gas compound such as cross-link density, tensile strength and elongation at break were studied. The hardness of the NBR rubber was found to decrease with decreasing acid concentration at both 120 and $140^{\circ}C$, but at $160^{\circ}C$ interestingly the hardness of the NBR rubber increased abruptly in a very short time at different acid concentrations. The tensile strength and elongation at break were found to decrease with increase in both the acid concentrate ion & temperature. The life time of the compounds were evaluated using the Arrhenius equation.

  • The present study has been carried out to elucidate the unsteady temperature characteristics of a refrigerator near gasket region by measuring time dependent temperature measurements. From the measured values of the time dependent temperature inside and outside region of a refrigerator, one could see that the temperature varies periodically with time from the effect of refrigerator operation. The measured mean temperatures at the wall had great different value from the previous other research results conducted by numeric ofheat transfer using improperfheat transfer boundary condition. The present study could give the experiment ofdata for the properfnumeric ofheat transfer an oysis and suggest more accuratefheat transfer boundary conditions for the inside and outside of a refrigerator.

  • The heat transfer performance and pressure drop characteristics of brazed-plate heat exchangers with 20 and 30 plates were experimentally measured and analyzed in this study. The mass flow rates of the heat exchangers with 20 and 30 plates were fixed at 0.6 and 0.9 kg/s for the low temperature side, respectively. The mass flow rate for the high temperature side was controlled from 0.2 kg/s to 1.2 kg/s. The inlet temperatures for the high and low temperature sides were $10^{\circ}C$ and $7^{\circ}C$, respectively. The heat transfer characteristics were not influenced by the number of plates. The pressure drop at the heat exchanger with 30 plates was slightly higher than that with 20 plates. The values calculated from the correlations based on gasket plate heat exchangers were compared with the experimental results. It was found that the predicted Nusselt numbers for the gasket plate heat exchangers were about 5% to 20% lower than the measured Nusselt numbers for the brazed plate heat exchangers. However, a pressure drop comparison showed that the calculated pressure drops at the gasket plate heat exchangers were less than half of the measured pressure drops at the brazed plate heat exchangers.

  • Half-beads of multi-layer-steel cylinder head gaskets take charge of sealing of lubrication oil and coolant between the cylinder head and the block. Since the head lifts off periodically due to the combustion gas pressure, both the dynamic sealing performance and the fatigue durability are essential for the gasket. A finite element model of the halfbead has been developed and verified with experimental data. The half-bead forming process was included in the model to consider the residual stress effects. The model is employed to assess the dependence of the sealing performance and the fatigue durability on the design parameters of half-bead such as the width and height of bead and the flat region length. The assessment results show that the sealing performance can be enhanced without significant deterioration of the fatigue durability in a certain range of the half-bead width. In the other cases the improvement of sealing performance is accompanied by the loss of the fatigue durability. Among three parameters, the bead width has the strongest influence.

  • A cabinet-door integrated finite element model for a built-in side-by-side refrigerator with an ice dispenser and home bar was constructed, and its deformation was analyzed by ANSYS. As loads, the food load in the shelf and baskets, and thermal load occurring during the normal operation condition were considered. From results of the analyses, the door height difference (DHD) and door flatness difference (DFD) between the two doors, and the increase in the gap of the door gasket, which affects the sealing of cool air in the cabinet, were derived. As results of an evaluation of the differences, the DHD and DFD under the assembled condition satisfied the acceptance criteria of the manufacturer. The food and thermal loads increased the DHD and DFD due to thermal deformation, and the DFD increased significantly. In addition, the increase in the gap of door gasket located between the cabinet and doors was derived from the results of displacements under the food and thermal loads. The evaluation showed that the maximum increase in gap appeared at the left edge of the freezing compartment gasket, which satisfied the acceptance criteria of the manufacturer.

  • Acrylonitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) has been used as a transformer gasket material because the transformer gaskets should have high resistivity to oil and should not swell and deform when it contact to insulating oils. Serious cracks were observed in the gaskets being used and ozone test was performed on new, specimens. Cracks were also observed on specimens. So we have performed the following tests on the anti-oxidants containing new gaskets according in accordance with KEPCO purchase specifications; ozone resistance, oil resistance, mechanical properties before and after aging.

  • Many welding processes are performed to construct cryogenic system. Leak-tight for the cryogenic system is required at low temperature environment. Helium leak detection techniques are commonly used to find leak for the cryogenic system. The helium leak detection techniques for spraying, sniffing and pressurizing techniques are introduced. High vacuum is also necessary to use helium leak detector. So, types of fluid flow, effective temperature, conductance and pumping speed are introduced for vacuum pumping. Leak test procedure is shown for pipe welding, cryomodule and low temperature test. Cryogenic seals which include copper gasket, helicoflex gasket and indium are investigated.
