  • Worldwide trend of waste treatment technology is rapidly transferring from "incineration system" to "gasification & melting system" which can derive the resources from waste and charge no more environmental burden to nature. And therefore it is necessary for our country to adopt gasification & melting system urgently to present the land pollution and lack of landfill area. Among several gasification and melting processes Daewoo-Thermoselect gasification and melting system is the representative process which can transfer waste to resources such as sin-gas, molten slag, metal hydroxide, mixed salt and sulfur through the process of compaction, degasification, gasification and melting.

  • As a demand for energy, many studies are increasing about energy resource. One of these resources is coal which reserves of underground. A lot of research to use coal is going on as method of IGCC (Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle). In addition, SNG(Substitute Natural Gas) and IGFC (Integrated Gasification Fuel Cell) are also being developed for fuel & electricity. This technology which uses synthesis gas after gasification is to produce electricity from the Fuel Cell. At this point, important thing is the components of synthesis gas. The main objective is to increase the proportion of methane and hydrogen in synthesis gas. The catalytic gasification is suitable to enhance the composition of methane and hydrogen. In this study, Exxon Predevelopment catalyst gasification study was served as a good reference and then catalytic gasification simulation process is conducting using Aspen Plus in this research. For this modelling, kinetic value should be calculated from Exxon's report which is used for modeling catalytic gasification. Catalytic gasification model was performed by following above method and was analyzed by thermodynamic method through simulation results.

  • Gasification plant using petroleum coke for refinery and power generation process is increased from considering petroleum coke as a valuable fuel. In this study, gasification of petroleum coke was performed to utilize petroleum coke and to develop essential technology using 1T/D coal gasification system. In case of petroleum coke gasification, because of lower reactivity, consumption of oxygen is higher than coal gasification. The calorific value of syngas from petroleum coke mixed with coal at a mass ratio of 1:1 shows about $6.7{\sim}7.2MJ/Nm^3$. Although carbon conversion could reach more than 92% according to oxygen amount, cold gas efficiency shows lower value than the case of coal. Therefore, it was shown that complemental study in burner design to atomize slurry droplet is required to elevate gasification performance of petroleum coke which has lower reactivity than coal.

  • Gasification and melting method is one of the most potential means for waste treatment process with low emission of fly ash or heavy metal, dioxin and high possibility of using slags as resources. Moisture contents influences directly a gasification characteristics of waste. So it is necessary to investigate the effect of moisture contents in gasification. But it is hard to consider the effect of moisture contents, using samples of powder form of Milligram's order in existing thermogravimetric analyser. Therefore, we made a thermogravimetric analysis device to applicate samples of Gram's order. Gasification characteristics are typically reported with result from thermogravimetric analysis date for wood and RDF samples along with changing moisture contents. It is discussed the way to apply these analysis results to gasification and melting furnace.

  • Gasification has been regarded as a very important technology to decrease environmental pollution and to obtain higher efficiency. The gasification process converts carbon containing feedstock into a synthesis gas, composed primarily of CO and $H_2$. And the synthesis gas can be used as a source for power generation or chemical material production. Through more than nine years, IAE developed and upgraded several gasification/melting pilot plant system, and obtained a good quality synthesis gas. This paper illustrates the gasification characteristics and operation results of two 3 ton/day synthesis gas production facilities. One is entrained-bed slagging type coal gasifier system which is normally operated in the temperature range of $1,400\~1,450^{\circ}C,\;8\~10$ bar pressure. And the other is fixed-bed type gasification/melting furnace system using MSW and industrial wastes as a feedstock.

  • Gasification is a therm-chemical conversion process to convert various solid fuels into gaseous fuels under limited supply of oxygen in high temperature environment. Considering current availability of biomass resources in this country, the gasification is more attractive than any other technologies in that the process can accept various combustible solid fuels including plastic wastes. Mixed fuels of biomass and polyethylene pellets were used in gasification experiments in this study in order to assess their potential for synthesis gas production. The results showed that higher reaction temperatures were observed in mixed fuel compared to woodchip experiments. In addition, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and methane concentrations were increased in the synthesis gas. Heating values of the synthesis gas were also higher than those from woodchip gasification. There are hundred thousand tons of agricultural plastic wastes generated in Korea every year. Co-gasification of biomass and agricultural plastic waste would provide affordable gaseous fuels in rural society.

  • An experiment was conducted in order to investigate gasification characteristics of rice husks in a fixed bed, which was a pre-step to design a continuous gasification system. Two air supply levels for gasification were chosen and their effects on the producer gas amount and producer gas composition were discussed. The main components of the producer gas were CO, $CO_2$, $O_2$, $H_2$ and THC (Total HydroCarbon). As airflow rate decreased, more producer gas was produced. The peak amount of CO, $H_2$ and THC were 28%, 7.5% and 0.68% in volume when constant airflow rate of $3.36\;m^3/s$ was used in the batch operation. About 4.5 kg of ash (9%) and condensed water including tars of 6 kg (11%) were produced from 50 kg rice husks in the gasification. Excluding the byproducts, all rice husks seemed to be transformed into producer gas. This gasification study was conducted prior to developing a continuous gasification system for biomass including agricultural byproducts.
