  • Increased worldwide concerns about fossil fuel costs and effects on the environment lead many governments and scientific societies to consider the hydrogen as the fuel of the future. Many researches have been made to assess the suitability of using the hydrogen gas as fuel for internal combustion engines and gas turbines; this suitability was assessed from several viewpoints including the combustion characteristics, the fuel production and storage and also the thermodynamic cycle changes with the application of hydrogen instead of ordinary fossil fuels. This paper introduces the basic environmental differences happening when changing the fuel of a marine gas turbine from marine diesel fuel to gaseous hydrogen for the same power output. Environmentally, the hydrogen is the best when the $CO_2$ emissions are considered, zero carbon dioxide emissions can be theoretically attained. But when the $NO_x$ emissions are considered, the hydrogen is not the best based on the unit heat input. The hydrogen produces 270% more $NO_x$ than the diesel case without any control measures. This is primarily due to the increased air flow rate bringing more nitrogen into the combustion chamber and the increased combustion temperature (10% more than the diesel case). Efficient and of course expensive $NO_x$ control measures are a must to control these emissions levels.

  • In the combustion of the pulverized coal compared with that of liquid fuel or gaseous fuel, serious pollutants such as ash, $NO_x$ and $SO_x$ are released to surroundings. The objective of this study is the reduction of such pollutants in the combustion process. The modeling of cyclone combustor which uses the method of two stage combustion was carried out. The main burner length, scattering angle and air/fuel ratio were considered as parameters. The results show that the shorter the main burner length is, the less the amounts of coals which exit the combustor directly are, but the scattered input of coal is required anyway in order to collect all ashes. It is recommended that the shorter the main burner length is, the less the scattering angle is. And in the case of the scattered input compared with no scattering, the temperature in the combustor is more uniform and the amount of volatile is more reduced.

  • Optimum operation conditions of low-NOx MILD combustion for gaseous and solid fuels have been investigated by experimental and computer simulation. Loop reactor type MILD combustor without air pre-heater has been used in the present work. The results show that the balance of injection velocities of fuel and surrounding air is major factor for maintaining MILD combustion mode. Temperature difference between lower and upper part can be reduced less than 20 degree of Celsius. It was found that NOx emission in MILD combustion also can be remarkably reduced to more than 85% in comparison with conventional premixed combustion, and reduced to more than 50% in case of nitrogen and carbon dioxide carrying dried waste water sludge and pulverized coal in comparison with the same of air carrying. It was also found that carbon monoxide emission increase was not appeared at the time of changeover to MILD combustion mode from premixed or air carrying combustion at optimum operation condition.

  • In this paper, a two-dimensional cross-channel model was applied to investigate influence of the gas diffusion layer(GDL) property and flow field geometry in the anode side for proton exchange membrane fuel cell(PEMFC). The GDL is made of a porous material such as carbon cloth, carbon paper, or metal wire mesh. To the simplicity, the GDL is represented as a block of material containing numerous pathways through which gaseous reactants and liquid water can pass. The purpose of present work was to study the effect of the GDL thickness and the porosity, and flow field geometry by computational fluid dynamics(CFD)

  • With numerical simulations, this study investigated the combustion and heat transfer of three different coals under air- and oxy-fuel combustion in a 100 MWe boiler. The boiler is retrofitted to an opposed-firing type while maintain the original furnace shape of downshot firing. The boiler achieved good combustion in both combustion modes for three coals tested. However, the contribution of gasification reactions by $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ significantly increased due to the lack of gaseous mixing. This was different from a typical front-wall firing boiler, which showed larger contribution of char oxidation during air-coal combustion. The wall heat flux was lower in oxy-coal mode at a $O_2$ level of 27%, which has to be considered in further development of the process.

  • This study presents 0-dimensional model for solid oxide fuel cells(SOFCs). The physics of the cell and the simplifying assumptions are presented, and only hydrogen participates in the electrochemical reaction. The electrical potential is predicted using this model. The Butler-Volmer equation is used to describe the activation polarization and the exchange current density is changed according to the partial pressure of reactants and the temperature. The electrical conductivities of electrodes and an electrolyte are calculated for the ohmic polarization. Material characteristics and temperature affect those factors. Analysis of concentration polarization based on transport of gaseous species through porous electrodes is incorporated in this model. Both binary diffusion and Knudsen diffusion are considered as the diffusion mechanism. For validation, simulation results at this work are compared with our experimental results and numerical results by other researchers.

  • MILD combustion has been successfully applied to gaseous fuels and few commercial systems are now in operation. Extending MILD combustion applicability to solid fuel of sawdust is the focus of the present work. The MILD combustion furnace at the University of Adelaide in Australia was used in this study. A measurement of $O_2$ and CO emissions have been carried out in parallel with consideration of NOx emission and compared in each modes of conventional natural gas combustion, natural gas MILD combustion, NOx emission in natural gas MILD combustion mode can be reduced to 20% in comparison with conventional combustion. Emission in cases of air carrying sawdust combustion and $CO_2$ carrying sawdust combustion were also compared. Air and $CO_2$ were sued as a carry gas for the sawdust. It was found that MILD conditions are possible for sawdust particles of less than $355{\mu}m$ without additional air pre-heating. It was also found that when using $CO_2$ as the carry gas the flame inside the furnace was not visible anymore and that NOx emission dropped to less than two folds.

  • The diesel vehicle is relatively superior to gasoline vehicle on the fuel consumption, durability and combustion efficiency. However, exhaust emission from diesel vehicle are known to be harmful to human health and environment. The treatment technologies for the diesel exhaust gases are classified as replacement of fuel, quality control of diesel fuel, improvement of engine and aftertreatment system. The most effective for the treatment technology is known to be aftertreatment system, and this research is continuously conducted by many groups. The DOC system has many advantages of reducing particulates and harmful gaseous substances such as CO. HC. Moreover, it is simple in device structure, relatively low cost, and easy to install witout retrofitting the vehicle. In this study, experiment were conducted to analyze the effects on factors of oxidation characteristics and conversion efficiency of DOC. In experiment, test was conducted to estimate engine emission in 11,000cc diesel engine which was equipped with DOC.

  • Development of a dynamic engine model is essential to predict and analyze of dynamic characteristics from a natural gas engine. Reducing the harmful exhaust emissions can be accomplished by a precise air-fuel ratio control. In this paper, the dynamic engine model was proposed and included mixture formation and intake process because the dynamic characteristics can be affected by the mixture components such as an air and a gaseous fuel. The air mass flow, the partial pressure ratio, and the gas constant are changed by variations of the components in the mixture formation and intake process. The dynamic engine model is applied to the natural gas engine for validation test. Experimental results show that the dynamic engine model is effective to predict the dynamic characteristics of the natural gas engine.

  • In this paper, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamic model of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell(PEMFC) with serpentine flow channel is presented. A steady state, single phase and isothermal numerical model has been established to investigate the influence of the GDL (Gas Diffusion Layer) parameters. The GDL is made of a porous material such as carbon cloth, carbon paper or metal wire mesh. For the simplicity, the GDL is modeled as a block of material having numerous pathways through which gaseous reactants and liquid water can pass. The porosity, permeability and thickness of the GDL, which are employed in the model parameters significantly affect the PEMFC performance at the high current region.
