A high resolution numerical method aimed at solving gas-liquid two-phase flow is proposed and applied to gas-liquid two-phase shock tube problem. The present method employs a finite-difference 4th-order Runge-Kutta method and Roe's flux difference splitting approximation with the MUSCL TVD scheme. By applying the homogeneous equilibrium cavitation model, the present density-based numerical method permits simple treatment of the whole gas-liquid two-phase flow field, including wave propagation and large density changes. The speed of sound for gas-liquid two-phase media is derived on the basis of thermodynamic relations and compared with that by eigenvalues. By this method, a Riemann problem for Euler equations of one dimensional shock tube was computed. Numerical results such as detailed observations of shock and expansion wave propagations through the gas-liquid two-phase media and some data related to computational efficiency are made. Comparisons of predicted results and exact solutions are provided and discussed.

A high resolution numerical method aimed at solving cavitating flow was proposed and applied to gas-liquid two-phase shock tube problem with arbitrary void fraction. The present method with compressibility effects employs a finite-difference 4th-order Runge-Kutta method and Roe's flux difference splitting approximation with the MUSCL TVD scheme. The Jacobian matrix from the inviscid flux of constitute equation is diagonalized analytically and the speed of sound for the two-phase media is derived by eigenvalues. So that the present method is appropriate for the extension of high order upwind schemes based on the characteristic theory. By this method, a Riemann problem for Euler equations of one dimensional shock tube was computed. Numerical results of high speed flow phenomena such as detailed observations of shock and expansion wave propagations through the gas-liquid two-phase media and some data related to computational efficiency are made. Comparisons of predicted results and solutions at isothermal condition are provided and discussed.
Using the multi-dimensional, multi-phase, nonisothermal Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell (PEFC) model presented in Part I, the effects of land/channel flow-field on temperature and liquid saturation distributions inside PEFCs are investigated in Part II. The focus is placed on exploring the coupled water transport and heat transfer phenomena within the nonisothermal and two-phase zone existing in the diffusion media (DM) of PEFCs. Numerical simulations are performed varying the land and channel widths and simulation results reveal that the water profile and temperature rise inside PEFCs are considerably altered by changing the land and channel widths, which indicates that oxygen supply and heat removal from the channel to the land regions and liquid water removal from the land toward the gas channels are key factors in determining the water and temperature distributions inside PEFCs. In addition, the adverse liquid saturation gradient along the thru-plane direction is predicted near the land regions by the numerical model, which is due to the vapor-phase diffusion driven by the temperature gradient in the nonisothermal two-phase DM where water evaporates at the hotter catalyst layer, diffuses as a vapor form and then condenses on the cooler land region. Therefore, the vapor phase diffusion exacerbates DM flooding near the land region, while it alleviates DM flooding near the gas channel.
A mathematical formulation based on two-phase, two-fluid hyperbolic conservation laws is developed to investigate propagation of shock waves in one- and two-dimensions. We used a high resolution upwind scheme called the split-coefficient matrix method. Two extreme cases are computed for validation of the computer code: the states of a pure gas and a pure liquid. Computed results agreed well with the previous experimental and numerical results. It is studied how the shock wave propagation pattern is affected by the void fraction in the two-phase flow. The shock structure in a two-phase flow turned out, in fact, much deviated from the shape well known in the gas only phase.
Two mesophilic trickling bed bioreactors filled with two different types of media, hydrophilic- and hydrophobic-cubes, were designed and tested for hydrogen production via anaerobic fermentation of sucrose. Each reactor consisted of a column packed with polymeric cubes and inoculated with heat-treated sludge obtained from anaerobic digestion tank. A defined medium containing sucrose was fed with changing flow rate into the capped reactor, hydraulic retention time and recycle rate. Hydrogen concentrations in gas-phase were constant, averaging 40% for all conditions tested. Hydrogen production rates increased up to $10.5 L{\cdot};h^{-1}{\cdot}L^{-1}$ of reactor when influent sucrose concentrations and recycle rates were varied. Hydrophobic media provided higher value of hydrogen production rate than hydrophilic media at the same operation conditions. No methane was detected when the reactor was under a normal operation. The major fermentation by-products in the liquid effluent of the both trickling biofilters were acetate and butyrate. The reactor filled with hydrophilic media became clogged with biomass and bio gas, requiring manual cleaning of the system, while no clogging occurred in the reactor with hydrophobic media. In order to make long-term operation of the reactor filled with hydrophilic media feasible, biofilm accumulation inside the media in the reactor with hydrophilic media and biogas produced from the reactor will need to be controlled through some process such as periodical backwashing or gas-purging. These tests using trickling bed biofilter with hydrophobic media demonstrate the feasibility of the process to produce hydrogen gas in a trickle-bed type of reactor. A likely application of this reactor technology could be hydrogen gas recovery from pre-treatment of high carbohydrate-containing wastewaters.
The leakage of cryogenic LNG through cracks in the insulation membrane of an LNG carrier causes the hull structure to experience a cold spot as a result of the heat transfer from the LNG. The hull structure will become brittle at this cold spot and the evaporated natural gas may potentially lead to a hazard because of its flammability. This paper presents a computational model for the LNG flow and heat diffusion in an LNG insulation panel subject to leakage. The temperature distribution in the insulation panel and the speed of gas diffusion through it are simulated to assess the safety level of an LNG carrier subject that experiences a leak. The behavior of the leaked LNG is modeled using a multiphase flow that considers the mixture of liquid and gas. The simulation model considers the phase change of the LNG, gas-liquid multiphase interactions in the porous media, and accompanying rates of heat transfer. It is assumed that the NO96-GW membrane storage is composed of glass wool and plywood for the numerical simulation. In the numerical simulation, the seepage, heat diffusion, and evaporation of the LNG are investigated. It is found that the diffusion speed of the leakage is very high to accelerate the evaporation of the LNG.
Two mesophilic trickling bed bioreactors filled with two different types of media, hydrophilic- and hydrophobic-cubes, were designed and conducted for hydrogen production under the anaerobic fermentation of sucrose. Each bioreactor consisted of the column packed with polymeric cubes and inoculated with heat-treated sludge obtained from anaerobic digestion tank. A defined medium containing sucrose was fed by the different hydraulic retention time(HRT), and recycle rate. Hydrogen concentrations in gas-phase were constant, averaging 40% of biogas throughout the operation. Hydrogen production rate was increased till $10.5\;L{\cdot}h^{-1}{\cdot}L^{-1}$ of bioreactor when influent sucrose concentrations and recycle rates were varied. At the same time, the hydrogen production rate with hydrophobic media application was higher than its hydrophilic media application. No methane was detected when the reactor was under a normal operation. The major fermentation by-products in the liquid effluent of the both trickling biofilters were acetate, butyrate and lactate. In order to run in the long term operation of both reactor filled with hydrophilic and hydrophobic media, biofilm accumulation on hydrophilic media and biogas produced should be controlled through some process such as periodical backwashing or gas-purging. Four sample were collected from each reactor on the opposite hydrogen production rate, and their bacterial communities were compared by terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis of PCR products generated using bacterial 16s rRNA gene primers (8f and 926r). It was expressed a marked difference in bacterial communities of both reactors. The trickling bed bioreactor with hydrophobic media demonstrates the feasibility of the process to produce hydrogen gas. A likely application of this reactor technology can be hydrogen gas recovery from pre-treatment of high carbohydrate-containing wastewaters.
