  • Technical practice code, KGS GC101 2018, for explosion hazard area selection and distance calculation of gas facility was enacted and implemented from July 12, 2018. This code includes whole contents of IEC60079-10-1 2015 (Explosive atmospheres Part 10-1: Classification of areas - Explosive gas atmospheres), and clarifies the interpretation of ambiguous standards or adds guidelines for standards. KGS GC101 is a method for classifying explosion hazard place types: (1) Determination of leak grade (2) Determination of leakage hole size (3) Determination of leakage flow (4) Determination of dilution class (5) Determination of ventilation effectiveness, finally (6) Determination of danger place (7) Explosion The range of dangerous places can be estimated. In order to easily calculate this process, the program (KGS-HAC v1.14, C-2018-020632) composed by Visual Basic for Application (Excel) language was produced by Korea Gas Safety Corporation. We will discuss how to use codes and programs to select and set up explosion hazard zones for field users.

  • Explosion Quantities and flashing mass resulting from the variation of temperature are calculated by a computer program, BLEVE ESTIMATOR, to carry out the risk assessment of BLEVE. The damages caused by the BLEVE are estimated under the explosion of the simulation condition similar to the Puchun LP gas station accident, and the results are compared with the commercial program SAFER of Dupont CO. Explosion quantities and flashing mass increase exponentially with the increase of explosion temperature. These values for propane are relatively higher than those for n-butane. In conditions of higher vessel temperature, vessel pressure, and liquid ratio of containment, higher overpressures are calculated.

  • A test facility to measure the performance of a KM(Kick Motor) is constructed, and prediction of blast wave propagation over the facility is performed to check if the safety of test personnel in MCC(Main Control Center) can be guaranteed even for the most severe explosion. Assuming that the initial explosion energy is contained in a sphere under the pressure of 500, 1000, 1500 psi, respectively, the radius of the sphere is determined for each pressure to set the mass of contained explosion gas to 35 kg. The material properties of explosion gas are set to be the ones of KM propellant combustion gas under normal condition. To reduce the effort and time required for a complex three-dimensional modeling, the flowfield is approximated to axismmetry. Calculations are performed for all three initial pressure conditions, and the analysis of the result is given for 1500 psi which is expected to be the worst case. The maximum pressure is 3.5 psig while the minimum pressure is -1.2 psig on the outer wall of MCC, and the maximum pressure difference between the inner and outer walls of protection wall amounts to 3.0 psi.

  • The influence of the over-pressure caused by Explosion in gas station was calculated by using the Hopkinson's scaling law and injury effect by accident to buildings and human bodies was estimated by applying the probit model. As a result, the injury estimation was conducted by using the probit model for leakage 10% of 20ton storage tank. The separate distances from LPG station for building(damage) and human(lung hemorrhage to death) are 260 and 30 meters, respectively.

  • Explosion limit is one of the major physical properties used to determine the fire and explosion hazards of the flammable substances. Explosion limits are used to classify flammable materials according to their relative flammability. Such a classification is important for the safe handling, storage, transportation of flammable substances. In this study, the lower explosion limits(LEL) of the flammable mixtures predicted with the appropriate use of the vapor composition and the heat of combustion of the individual components which constitute mixture. The values calculated by the proposed equations were a good agreement with literature data within a few percent. From a given results, It is to be hoped that this methodology will contribute to the estimation of the explosive properties of flammable mixtures with improved accuracy and the broader application for other flammable substances.

  • In this study the explosion characteristics of terephtalic acid dust(PTA) was investigated with the Hartmann type apparatus. The minimum ignition energy, minimum explosible concentration, flame propagation velocity, explosion pressure, explosion pressure rise rate and the effect of inert dust(talcum) on explosion characteristics were measured. Flame velocity was 50m/s at 700g/m$^3$ concentration, and the explosion pressure and explosion pressure rise rate were most likely with that of gas explosion. It was found that an inert dust acts as a heat sinker and it disturbs the combustion of flammable dust, as a result, explosion pressure and explosion pressure rise rate were decreased and minimum explosion concentration was increased with increasing the fraction of talcum dust in PTA.

  • The utilization of LPG(Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is increasing as an environmental-friendly fuel in all countries making green growth new paradigm, and use of gas is spread fast as motor fuels to decrease air pollution. Loss of lives by explosion and fire is happening every year as gas use increases, and gas accident in large scale storage property is causing serious problems socially. To minimize this problem, underground containment type storage tank is being presented as an alternative recently. In this study, to minimize explosion occurrence in underground containment type storage tank, the suitable storage tank is designed to consider explosion prevention that makes exposure surface area minimize in confined contents volume and flame to construct storage tank by the most suitable condition in the underground containment room. As a result of the design of storage tank having the most suitable condition by this research, underground containment space was minimized on diameter 3m, length 4.83m in 20 tons storage tank and its safety was improved as exposure surface area in flame decreased by 89.4%, compared with the existent storage tank.

  • Liquefied Petroleum 6aso-PG) is combustible gas which used for fuel for domestic and automobiles. A research for adjust a component of LPG to improve the fuel characteristics and control the manufacturing process of that is carrying in petrochemical industry. Some kinds of LPG blending is considered as a adjusting method to control component of LPG. LPG is mainly propane for domestic use and butane for automobile use but propylene and butylene also a kind of LPG Change of explosion characteristic and combustion gas component by mixing of propylene in propane and butane was measured and analysed in this research. Based on the result of experiment, it was found that explosion pressure and pressure rise rate was slightly increased with mixing rate of propylene and it was considered the possibility of increasing the CO concentration in combustion gas with increase the mixing rate of propylene.

  • The data of city gas accidents has been collected and analysed for not only predictions of the fire and explosion accidents but also the criteria of societal risk. The accidents of the recent 11 years have been broken up into such 3 groups roughly as "release", "explosion", "fire" d 16 groups in detail. Owing to the Poisson probability distribution functions, 'careless work-explosion-pipeline' and 'joint loosening & erosion-release-pipeline' items respectively have turned out to record the lowest and most frequency among the recent 11-years accidents. And thus the proper counteractions must be carried out. In order to assess the societal risks tendency of the fatal gas accidents and set the more obvious safety policies up, the D. O. Hogon equation and the regression method has been used to range the acceptable range in the F-N curve of the cumulative casualties. The further works requires setting up successive database on the fire and explosion accidents systematically to obtain reliable analyses. Also the standard codification will be demanded.

  • In order to evaluate the fire and explosion involved and to ensure the safe and optimized operation of chemical processes, it is necessary to know combustion characteristics. The explosion limit, the heat of combustion, flame temperature and temperature dependence of the lower explosive limit are the major combustion characteristics used to determine the fire and explosion hazards of the flammable substances. The aim of this study is to investigate interrelationship of explosion characteristics and the temperature dependence of the lower explosion limit at elevated temperature for akylketones. By using the reference data, the empirical equations which describe the interrelationships of explosion properties of akylketones have been derived. Also, the new equations using the mathematical and statistical methods for predicting the temperature dependence of lower explosion limits of akylketones on the basis of the literature data are proposed. The values calculated by the proposed equations agreed with literature data within a few percent. From the given results, using the proposed methodology, it is possible to predict the explosion limits of the other flammable substances.
