It is important to measure the gas exchange activity of the crops in canopy scale to understand the process of biomass production and yield formation. Thermal imaging of the canopy surface temperature is a powerful tool to detect the gas exchange activity of the crop canopy. The simultaneous measurement of the canopy temperature and the meteorological data enables us to calculate the canopy diffusive conductance ($g_c$) based on the heat flux model (Monteith et al. 1973, Horie et al. 2006). It is, however, difficult to realize the long-term and continuous monitoring of $g_c$ due to the occurrence of the calculation error caused by the fluctuation of the environmental condition. This is partly because the model assumption is too simple to describe the meteorological and aerodynamic conditions of the crop canopy in the field condition. Here we report the novel method of the direct measurement of the aerodynamic resistance ($r_a$) of the crop canopy, which enables us the stable and continuous measurement of the gas exchange capacity of the crop plants. The modified heat balance model shows the improved performance to quantify $g_c$ under the fluctuating meteorological condition in the field. The relationship between $g_c$ and biomass production of rice and soybean varieties is also discussed in the presentation.
The regulations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) have been steadily strengthened in ship emissions. Accordingly, there is a growing need for development of related technologies for the removal of contaminants that may occur during the treatment of SOx and NOx using a wet scrubber. However, this system also leads to wastewater production when the exhaust gas is scrubbed. In this research, we evaluated the performance of an ion selective resin process in accordance with scrubber wastewater discharge regulations, specifically nitrate discharge, by the IMO. Accelerated real and synthetic wastewater of wet scrubbers, contained high amounts of TDS with high nitrate, is used as feed water in lab scale systems. Furthermore, a pilot scale dissolved air flotation (DAF) using microbubble generator with ion exchange resin process was combined and developed in order to apply for the treatment of wet scrubber wastewater. The results of the present study revealed that operating conditions, such as resin property, bed volume (BV), and inlet wastewater flow rate, significantly affect the removal performance. Finally, through a pilot test, DAF with ion exchange resin process showed a noticeable improvement of the nitrate removal rate compared to the single DAF process.

The combustion characteristics of the D.I. diesel engine are largely dependent on the air-fuel ratio and the gas exchange process. The main factors are the shape of combustion chamber, fuel injection system, air flow inside the cylinder, intake air mass flow rate and so forth. Because these factors affect the combustion in a mutual and combined manner, it is very important to clearly understand the correlation of these factors in order to provide the combustion improvement plans. In this paper, we studied the performance and the gas exchange process of marine four-stroke engine using the engine cycle simulation. Also, we predicted briefly turbocharger engine matching.

A zero-dimensional direct simulation Monte Carlo(DSMC) model is developed for simulating diatomic gas including vibrational kinetics. The method is applied to the simulation of two systems: vibrational relaxation of a simple harmonic oscillator and translational-rotational-vibrational energy exchange process under heating and cooling. In the present DSMC method, the variable hard sphere molecular model and no time counter technique are used to simulate the molecular collision kinetics. For simulation of diatomic gas flows, the Borgnakke-Larsen phenomenological model is adopted to redistribute the translational and internal energies.

This study presents a novel approach to hydrogen production by biogas from organic waste without CO2 removal. A process model was developed to reduce the costs associated with biogas pretreatment and purification processes. Through optimization of heat exchange networks, the simulation aimed to minimize process costs, maximizing hydrogen production and flue gas temperature. The results reveal that the most efficient process model maximizes the flue gas temperature while following the constraint of the number of heat exchangers. These findings hold promise for contributing to the expansion of "Biogas-to-clean hydrogen" energy conversion technology.

Process-based model (PBM), based on the interactions between endogenous physiological processes and many environmental factors, can be a powerful tool for estimating crop growth and productivity. Carbon acquisition and biomass accumulation are the main components in PBM, so it has become important to understand and integrate gas exchange process in crop model. This study aimed to assess the applicability of FvCB model (a leaf model of C3 photosynthesis proposed by Farquhar, von C aemmerer, and Berry (1980)) in onion (Allium cepa L.). For parameterization, two early-maturing onion cultivars, 'Singsingball' and 'Thunderball', grown in a temperature gradient plastic film house, were used in measuring leaf net CO2 assimilation rate (A), and then, parameter estimation was carried out for four parameters including Vcmax (maximum rate of carboxylation), Jmax (maximum rate of electron transport), TPU (rate of triose phosphate utilization), and Rd (Dark respiration rate). The gas-exchange model calibrated in this research is expected to be able to explain the photosynthetic responses of onion under various environmental conditions (R2=0.95***).
Since the heat exchange system, such as the boiler of power plant, gas turbine, and radiator require a high rate heat efficiency and the efficiency of these systems is depended on the control methods. However, it is important f3r operator to understand control system of these systems. In order to properly apply control equipment to these process control systems, such as boiler, any other heat process, or process control system it is necessary to understand the basic aspects and operation principle of the process that relate control, interrelationships of the process characteristics, and the dynamics that are involved. Generally, PID controllers are used in these systems but it is difficult for engineer to understand the complex dynamics and the tuning method because of the coupling action and disturbance in the system loop. In this paper, we design an effective experimental system fur automatic control education and analyze its characteristics through experimental system and industrial plant control software to study how they can team automatic control system by experiments.

Residual gas fraction in a combustion process is very crucial to improve combustion and cyclic variations. Especially, the residual gas fraction is strongly affected by backflow of the residual gas during the valve overlap period in an idle operation. Therefore, it is one of the most interesting that valve timings can affect flow characteristics of gas exchange process, especially during idle operation. This analysis investigates residual gas fraction with respect to valve timing changes which is critical for combustion efficiency and engine performance. Flow characteristics of residual gas by changing intake and exhaust valve timing are calculated by CFD methodology during an idle operation in an SI engine. It is analyzed that retarded EVO and advanced IVO results in the increase of valve overlap period and consequently, residual gas fraction. Futhermore, changes in IVO have stronger effects on variation of residual gas fraction.
While structured packing modules are known to be efficient for surface wetting and gas-liquid exchange in abiotic surface catalysis, this model study explores structured packing as a growth surface for catalytic biofilms. Microbial biofilms have been proposed as selfimmobilized and self-regenerating catalysts for the production of chemicals. A concern is that the complex and dynamic nature of biofilms may cause fluctuations in their catalytic performance over time or may affect process reproducibility. An aerated continuous trickle-bed biofilm reactor system was designed with a 3 L structured packing, liquid recycling and pH control. Pseudomonas diminuta established a biofilm on the stainless steel structured packing with a specific surface area of 500 $m^2m^{-3}$ and catalyzed the oxidation of ethylene glycol to glycolic acid for over two months of continuous operation. A steady-state productivity of up to 1.6 $gl^{-1}h^{-1}$ was achieved at a dilution rate of 0.33 $h^{-1}$. Process reproducibility between three independent runs was excellent, despite process interruptions and activity variations in cultures grown from biofilm effluent cells. The results demonstrate the robustness of a catalytic biofilm on structured packing, despite its dynamic nature. Implementation is recommended for whole-cell processes that require efficient gas-liquid exchange, catalyst retention for continuous operation, or improved catalyst stability.

In this study, we constructed a process simulation model for an agricultural by-products based Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) combined heat and power generation system as part of the introduction of technology for energy self-sufficiency in the agricultural sector. The aim was to reduce the burden of increasing fuel and electricity consumption due to rapid fluctuations in international oil prices and the expansion of smart farming in domestic farms, while contributing to the national greenhouse gas reduction goals. Based on the experimental results of 0.3 ton/day torrefied agricultural by-product gasification experiment, a model for an agricultural by-product-based SOFC cogeneration system was constructed, and optimization of the heat exchange network was conducted for SOFC capacities ranging from 4 to 20 kW. The results indicated that an 8 kW agricultural by-product-based SOFC cogeneration system was optimal under the current system conditions. It is anticipated that these research findings can serve as foundational data for future commercial facility design.
