  • TPTF (Turbopump Real Propellant Test Facility) at Naro Space Center has used alcohol burner system to simulate the gas flow of gas generator of liquid rocket engine. During the test at TPTF, the temperature and pressure at turbine inlet were smoothly increased while those of the gas generator of engine were constant. Present research developed a simulation code for the burner and the piping system and applied to the system. The calculation results were in good agreement with the test, and confirmed quantitatively that the non-steadiness is due to the heat transfer of the pipe. While the insulation of the pipe is ineffective, the length has a large impact on the turbine inlet condition. The present research clarified the empirically estimation of test condition, and can be applied to determination of the following test conditions.

  • The results of combustion performance test of fuel-rich gas generator with dual swirl injectors are described. By changing simulating duct and recess number(RN) of the injectors, we inspected whether the combustion instability took place. When the injectors of RN = 0.5 were used, combustion instabilities could be reduced using the simulating duct. However, the effect of the simulating duct on the gas generator with the injectors of RN = 1.5 was not significant.

  • In this study, a comparison of dynamic pressure data measured in hot-firing tests of liquid rocket engine gas generators with different types of dynamic pressure sensors is presented. The dynamic pressure sensors of different types and manufacturers have exhibited different dynamic pressure due to the influence of thermal shock. However, for the characteristic frequencies and RMS(root mean square) values which are important factors for the analysis of combustion instability, the differences between sensors have been found to be negligible.

  • This paper describes a methodology and results for the analysis of a small steam injected gas turbine cogeneration system. A performance analysis program for the gas turbine engine is utilized with modifications required for the model of steam injection and the heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). The object of simulation is a simple cycle gas turbine engine under development which adopts a centrifugal compressor. The analysis is based on the off-design operation of the gas turbine and the compressor performance map is utilized. Analyses are carried out with the injection ratio as the main parameter. The effect of steam injection on the power and efficiency of gas turbine and cogeneration capacity is investigated. Also presented is the variation in the main operating parameters inside the HRSG. Remarkable reduction in NOx generation by steam injection is confirmed. In addition, it is observed that for the 100% power operation the temperature of the cooled first nozzle blade decreases by 100.deg. C at full steam injection, which seems to have a favorable effect on the engine life time.

  • The system analysis and design program of the liquid rocket engine has been developed for preliminary conceptual design process. The program consists of modular programs analyzing the main thruster, the gas-generator, turbo-pumps, the turbine, pipes, valves and so on. Each module has been developed in order to estimate performance, weight, and shape parameters of the components. The results of them have been verified with experimental data or other programs.

  • Performance analysis of a 50KW turbo-generator gas turbine engine with a recuperator was studied. Recuperated cycle has been employed to meet maximum fuel economy and ultra low emissions especially for military and vehicular engines. From thermodynamic stand point, it is known that recuperative cycle can contribute most to enhance thermal cycle efficiency for the Pressure ratios under 10 and of comparatively low turbine inlet temperature. Efficiency of a simple cycle with a recuperator increases relatively about 30% than without one at effectiveness of 0.5. Pressure losses in the heat exchanger less than 5.2% is considered in the design process. A tubular type heat exchanger is selected for this particular engine because it can provide simple construction as well as structural sturdiness and excellent leak tightness.

  • A computational fluid analysis was performed on an LOx line system of a liquid rocket engine. The model was created with 3D CAD and imbedded to the 3D CFD program. Before the full scale analysis on the system was carried out, each components with simplified models was analyzed to save time and cost. As a result, the inlet pressure of the gas generator should be compensated with a certain device unless the inlet pressure of the line system is sufficiently high. The flow pattern of the exit of the system was dependant upon the location of the orifice as well as the size. As a whole the line system analyzed met the requirements, and will be tested and confirmed after being manufactured.

  • The present study describes the methods and standards for the combustion stability assessment of a thrust chamber and a gas generator as parts of a liquid rocket engine. The first method uses a statistical approach through typical static combustion tests and the second one a dynamic assessment identifying decaying characteristics of pressure fluctuations excited by a pulse generating device. Based on accumulated test results, it is concluded that the maximal values for combustion stability are 3% of a chamber static pressure with a Root-Mean-Square value of pressure fluctuations, and 10 msec with a decay time.

  • Present study deals with performance analysis and experimental investigation of an inert gas generator (IGG) which can be used as effective means to suppress fire. The IGG uses a turbo-jet engine to generate inert gas for fire extinguishing. It is generally known that a less degree of oxygen content in the product of combustion will increase the effectiveness of fire extinguishing. An inert gas generator system with water injection has advantages of suffocating and cooling effects that are very Important factors for fire extinguishing. Some aspects of influencing parameters, such as, air excess coefficient, compressor pressure ratio, air temperature before combustion chamber, gas temperature after combustion chamber, mass flow rate of water injection etc. on the performance of IGG system are investigated.
