  • Pulse inverter-type TIG(Tungsten Inert Gas) arc welders are studied to investigate the dynamic performance of welding. Welding currents are controlled to be pulse waveforms resulting in stable are better welding performance. The hybrid-type controller is proposed to control the welding current. Todemonstrate the practical significance of our results we present some simulation results.

  • Ferritic stainless steels would be the most important alloys under the chloride environment. They are a cheaper alternative to austenitic stainless steels [1]. The present study is related to gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) characteristics of Type 444 stainless steels. The heat of welding leads to grain coarsening in the HAZ and in the weld metal of ferritic stainless steels because they solidify directly from the liquid to the ferritc phase without any intermediate phase transformation. It is therefore recommended that these alloys be welded with a low heat input and at high welding speeds. Attempts to improve weldability were made by using of direct current straight polarity (DCSP) and pulsed current GTAW processes in this study. Measuring weld bead, grain size and Erichsen test were performed and the effects of heat input, pulse frequency on the weld metal and HAZ were studied. The main results were obtained as followings: decreasing heat input was effective to control the width of weld both in DCSP welding and in pulsed current welding; pulsed current welding was found to refine the grain size effectively and the finest grain size was found at the frequency of 150Hz in pulsed current welding; it was found that decreasing heat input also refine the HAZs effectively and the frequency had no different effect on HAZ at the same heat input; the ductility could be improved effectively in pulsed current welding.

  • Performance demonstration with real flawed specimens has been strongly required for nondestructive evaluation of safety class components in nuclear power plant. Specimen has been designed to produce mechanical fatigue flaw with tension stress and fatigue flaw has been produced to control stress and cycle, for suitable roughness. Notch condition is considered for control of fracture mode. After seal welding for fracture surface, final welding was performed to complete flaw specimen with GTAW(Gas Tungsten Arc welding) and FCAW(Flux Cored Arc Welding). It was demonstrated flaw size of flawed specimen by radiographic. testing and ultrasonic testing.

고장력강판 적용 샤시부품의 용접부 내구수명 향상기술 개발 (Development of Durability Enhancement Technology for Arc Weldings in Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS) Chassis Parts)

  • In general, discontinuity of metallurgical and structural points of weld zone could decline the fatigue strength. For the lightweight trend, the AHSS application in automotive chassis is in-progress. However, there are few research reports on AHSS welds fatigue strength in especially automotive chassis parts. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the effects of the factors affecting the AHSS welding fatigue strength. As the result, the stress concentration of weld bead is the most important factor for welding fatigue strength. For the enhancement of welding fatigue strength, we focused on reducing the stress concentration of the welding beads. So, we applied and proved the plasma welding process and GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) dressing method. It was verified by uniaxial fatigue specimen, fatigue performance increased from 40 to 60% by applying TIG dressing method compared to the conventional GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding). These results could be recommended the enhancement of fatigue performance of AHSS.

Abrasion and Impact Wear Resistance of the Fe­based Hardfacing Weld by Dispersing the Recycled WC

  • The abrasion and impact wear resistance were investigated on the hardfacing weld dispersed with the recycled hard metal(HM). The HM was composed of the tungsten carbide(WC) reinforced metal matrix composite. The cored wire filled with the 35 wt.% HM and 0­6 wt.% of the alloying element, Fe­75Mn­7C(FeMnC), was used for the gas metal arc(GMA) welding. The FeMnC addition to the 35 wt.% HM did not improve the abrasion wear property since the amount of the tungsten carbide formed was decreased with respect to the FeMnC amount. However, the 6 wt.% FeMnC addition to the 35 wt.% HM exhibited the better impact wear resistance than the hardfacing weld by the 40 wt.% HM.

  • The paper deals with the effect of hydrogen or helium in argon as a shielding gas on GTA welding of austenitic stainless steel. The studies were carried out in GTA(Gas Tungsten Arc) welding with a non-consumable electrode in case with different volume additions of hydrogen or helium to the argon shielding gas, i.e $5%H_2,\;10%H_2$, 30%He and 67%He. The penetration, welding voltage, microstructure and mechanical property were examined. The deepest penetration was obtained from the sample which was welded under shielding gas of $10%H_2$. The studies showed that hydrogen or helium addition to argon changes the static characteristic of the welding arc. The hydrogen or helium addition to argon increases arc power and the quantity of the material melted. The weld metal penetration depth and its width increased with increasing hydrogen or helium content. Additionally, welding voltage increased with increasing hydrogen or helium content.

Heat transfer enhancement in gas tungsten arc welding using azimuthal magnetic fields generated by external current

  • This paper proposes the idea to enhance the heat transfer in Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) by using the azimuthal magnetic field. The azimuthal magnetic field generated by the external currents makes the Lorentz force stronger, and consequently improves the heat transfer by the faster flow movement. The enhanced heat transfer might improve the welding performance by increasing the temperature at the workpiece. To validate the proposed idea, a two-dimensional axi-symmetric model of GTAW is built, and the multiphysics simulation of GTAW is carried out. As the analysis result, the distributions of electric current, electromagnetic fields, arc flow velocity, and temperature are investigated. Then, the proposed idea for heat transfer enhancement is validated by comparing the Lorentz force, flow velocity, and temperature distribution with and without azimuthal magnetic fields.

극저온 환경에 적용되는 INCONEL 718합금의 Gas Tungsten Arc Welding 기계적 특성 평가 (Mechanical Properties Evaluation of Gas Tungsten Arc Welding for INCONEL 718 alloy apply to Cryogenic Condition)

  • Inconel 718 alloy has excellent mechanical properties at room temperature, high temperature and cryogenic conditions. UTS of base metal is about 900MPa at room temperature; this is increased up to 1300MPa after heat treatment & aging-hardening. Mechanical properties of Inconel 718 Alloy were similar to those shown in the the results for tensile test; mechanical properties of Inconel 718 alloy's GTAW were similar to those of base metal's properties at room temperature. Mechanical properties at cryogenic conditions were better than those at room temperature. Heat-treated Inconel 718, non- filler metal GTAW on Inconel 718 and GTAW used filler metal on Inconel 718's UTS was 1400MPa at cryogenic condition. As a result, the excellent mechanical properties of Inconel 718 alloy under cryogenic conditions was proved through tensile tests under cryogenic conditions. In addition, weldability of Inconel 718 alloy under cryogenic conditions was superior to that of its base-metal. In this case, UTS of hybrid joint (IS-G) at -100$^{\circ}C$ was 900MPa. Consequently, UTS of Inconel 718 alloy is estimated to increase from -100$^{\circ}C$ to a specific temperature below -100$^{\circ}C$. Therefore, Inconel 718 alloy is considered a pertinent material for the production of Lox Pipe under cryogenic conditions.

철도차량용 알루미늄 압출 패널의 마찰교반용접 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on Friction stir welding Properties of Extruded Aluminum Panels for Rolling Stock)

  • Extruded aluminium panels have been widely used for railway vehicle structures because of their light specific weight and other merit. In the past, GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) and GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) were mainly used to join aluminium panels. But recently friction stir welding (FSW) is widely used. due to its lots of advantage. In this study aluminium A6005-T6 which are used for car body structures was chosen. The influence of main parameters such as : pin rotating speed, welding speed, shoulder diameter, pin length and tilting angle on mechanical properties was examined. Optical microscope observation, micro hardness test and tensile test were carried out. Tensile strength of the stir welded plates is 74% of that of the base material.

Gas Tunsten Arc 용접에서 용융지폭의 퍼지 제어에 관한 연구 (A Study of Fuzzy Control of Weld Pool Width in Gas Tungsten Arc Welding)

  • Uniform weld pool shape is important in determining the weld quality. And weld pool width is one of the most dominant factors of the seld pool shape. In order to control the weld pool width, the fuzzy logic controller, which is well adapted to the complicated nonlinear systems such as welding, was used in this study. The weld pool image was obtained through CCD camera, and the weld pool width was calculated by processing the image. Uaing the calculated width, welding speed, as a control input, was inferred by the fuzzy logic controller. An uniform weld pool width can be successfully obtained regardless of the disturbances in the system.
